Cons: they tried to cheat us on the bill twice. We ordered a salad which never arrived but it was on our bill for 20euros. We asked to have it removed. When the revised bill came, it now had a different name with 12euros. We asked to have it removed again. Finally the third time, they got it right. Just figuring out the bill took 30mins. Food took 60mins after ordering, and they also never gave us extra napkins after we spilled our drinks. You can't come to Brussels without trying Moules-Frites (Mussels & Fries). We decided to visit Chez Leon to indulge in this popular Belgian cuisine. I'm a big fan of mussels at home, so I knew that I'd enjoy them here. We tried the pot roasted Mussels, which is kind of traditional, the fried Mussels (En friture) served with tarter sauce and the Mussels baked with butter, garlic, tomato and cheese (Moules Provençale / Provençaalse). The latter were truly superb. I'd never tried Mussels this way before, but I thoroughly enjoyed them paired with crispy, golden fries and a crisp, chilled beer. The wait staff was welcoming and friendly upon entry. Once seated, the wait for service was a bit slow to start, but it was pretty busy. I used to love this place and from time to time I've seen customer service go down the drain. From longer waits even when they're not busy. One is being rude by treating other customers of colors differently than the other. Coming from the U.S. this is not how we treat people especially if you are in customer service industry. I've been coming here for about 1.5 years now and I promise you that next time I am here which is some time this month I will not be coming back here. I will find a new place that deserves hungry customer like me They will sit you down but they will let you wait about 15 minutes before even asking you if you need anything to drink then when you give them which you have to do by the time they come back with your drink otherwise you will have to wait another 20 minutes if you're lucky. Ones they take your order you'll have to wait another 20-30 minutes for them to bring your food and you would think it will be hot but it's lukewarm and the fries are cold. So it seems like it's been sitting there too long. I guess you can excuse if they are not busy I've been in the restaurant when there's barely customers and it's still the same sometimes worse. Waiters just stands around in a circle chatting with each other: I think the owner of the restaurant should know thanks happening. I really like their food but I'm sorry my dinner shouldn't take 2.5hrs. Check out the other restaurants around it. There's a lot. Recommended by my hotel, Chez Leon was all that and more! It's a big spot, but looked really small when I first walked in - it wasn't until I used the bathroom I realized how massive the restaurant is. We were seated near the front and provided menus right away. I ordered a tripel and went with a lunch option where I got a salad, entree, and dessert. I ordered sausages for my entree. To start with the service wasn't great , they were not friendly and welcoming at all , it honestly felt like because we are Americans I couldn't help but noticing how they were with other non American people . Went here for mussels because it was recommended by Rick Steves. My husband doesn't like them so he tried another entree. Mussels we fine- they came with fries (pretty good) and beer (ok). Service was good. Husband's dish - sausage, bacon and mashed potatoes- he felt was inedible. Sausage and potatoes were tasteless and "bacon" was a hunk of fatty pork that was full of tendons. We came to Chez Leon for my husband's birthday on a recent trip, and it was one of the highlights of our time visiting Brussels. This place is an institution, and I totally see why! They have an extensive menu and do have some vegetarian options as well. He ordered mussels (a must), and I had the vegetarian toast. Both were amazing, and washed down well with their house beer. Was excited to try this place out as there was a ton of people inside and its one of the most famous places to eat in Brussels. On a Saturday night, I was surprised and lucky to find that they still had a lot of tables open but I was honestly not a big fan of the food despite how cute the interior of the restaurant was. I ordered the Cream Mussels and thought it was actually quite bad. The mussels were not very fresh, it seemed like it was in the freezer before and was extremely over cooked. Also, this was my fault for ordering the wrong dish, but the soup felt too salty to the point of indigestibility. The ham on top was a weird addition as it very much diluted the flavor of the mussels. I don't know why, but the dish just felt very fake to me, something you would get at a cheap buffet. In addition, the fries were very okay, not very crispy on the outside. Also the water came 10 minutes after our main entree was served and eaten, which was weird. Overall, probably wouldn't come back to this place but there's a very high chance I might have just ordered the wrong food. To be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with anything. read more

But don't pass by this big, bustling restaurant, which has been feeding locals and visitors since 1893. The best reason to eat here is the choice of mussels. Whether you want them gratinéed with snail butter, deep-fried, raw with a mustardy sauce, or just accompanied by cream or white wine, they got it for you. The rest of the menu is long, with traditional meaty dishes like rabbit stewed in kriek beer, Brussels-style dumplings etc. There's a very respectable beer list (and the house beer is excellent). This famous restaurant in downtown Brussels has been a family-owned venue since it opened in 1893,when it was a modest "friterie" (a fried food place, typically seafood). Since it was grown into a maze of multiple levels, stairs and floors, à la E. M. Escher. The menu consists of a combination of typical Belgian dishes, like moules et frites (mussels and fries) served in different styles, croquettes de crevette (shrimp croquettes) and French dishes like steak et frites, raw oysters, and a number of other fried seafood dishes. The place was absolutely packed when we arrived as a party of six, and even more packed when we left around 7:30pm (there was a line outside, which I was told by our friends was not uncommon). We were quickly seated in the highest point of the restaurant, against a window, which was nice. The whole table ordered their "Léon spécial" which consisted of 600 gr of mussels in a classic Belgian sauce for mussels of, celery and wine, beer or house wine. I also ordered escargots (snails) in persillade (butter, gealic and parsley sauce). Bread was shared with the table. The escargots were very small, served in their shells. The persillade sauce was watery and thin, and not very good. I finished my escargots and was waiting for my mussels. I had to ask the waiter for water, bread and my glass of white wine. He seemed incredibly busy running all over the place (there were several other waiters equally busy). I know that the place was packed throughout its innumerable levels and floors, but the service was extremely lackluster. I finally got my mussels, which are traditionally served with fries and mayonnaise. Everyone at my table got their fries with mayonnaise servings; I didn't, so I had to again ask for it to our waiter, who was frantically running around. The mussels, were pretty small, but a decent amount. You order mussels because you want to get to the delicious juice on the bottom and sop it up with bread. There was a lot of sauce, but like the escargot persillade, was watery and had an incredible amount of shredded celery (I am not a fan of celery). Chez Léon seemed to me one of those incredibly touristy places that every city has that does not serve exactly the best food, but that they are famous and affordable. I substracted two stars out of five; one for the lackluster service and another for the lackluster food. There are many better places in Brussels to have a typical meal. Chez Léon may be one of the most famous, but not necessarily the best choice. read more

We ordered one meal for one person (muscles, salad, fries, and a beer), split the muscles and salad, and ordered another main and side of beer. The Léon beer was light and refreshing. The muscles were warm and delicious. The salad...could have been better. Atmosphere is what makes this spot win. It's decked with Brussels memorabilia and signature photos. After going on a free walking tour of the city, seeing TinTin and The Smurfs on the wall were icing on the cake for a Belgium-packed experience. Good date spot (if you are from out of town). Unlike many other establishments on this bustling street, this restaurant is on the bigger side and offers more seating which is much needed when my party of five needs to find a spot for dinner. Before we get to the food, I have to say one must come here for the service. It's the service that makes this place stand out. Perhaps we lucked out, but we ended up with a server who exudes friendliness and humor beyond what one normally experiences, particularly in the US. He joked with our children, brought an extra ice cream out for our oldest who didn't get a free one as she didn't order from the kids menu, and was patient with our broken French throughout the meal. We would come back just to see his radiant smile again. Now the food. It's on the bland side. While my mussels were fresh, it could have used more herbs and seasoning.
