The location of La Maison is pretty central - it's literally in a very touristy part of Old Quebec (Petit Champlain). It also gets pretty busy. Coffee wise - I think it's okay. The latte I get had a weak taste of espresso and tasted a bit more watery than I'd like. I got a pastry in the morning. Nothing special but also nothing bad. Perhaps their other drinks are better but my latte was simply okay. Service was fast and prompt though. read more

Picture this: soft snow falling on the cobblestone streets of Petit-Champlain, fairy lights glowing, and the warm light spilling out of this beautiful little café. I ducked in both mornings of my short trip and could have happily stayed all day. The interior is perfect Québécois charm: exposed stone walls, wooden beams, cozy lighting, and that unbeatable smell of fresh baking. First morning I ordered the pistachio latte and the quiche Florentine. I would legitimately sell my firstborn for that pistachio latte: silky, perfectly balanced, with a rich, natural pistachio flavor that no syrup could ever match. One sip and I was ruined for life. The quiche was flawless: buttery, flaky crust, creamy spinach-and-cheese filling, baked to golden perfection. Absolute breakfast heaven. I braved a full-on snowglobe blizzard the next morning just to come back. This time I paired the same life-changing pistachio latte with the almond croissant. I'd hand over my other kid for daily access to these croissants (kidding... mostly). Impossibly crisp and flaky outside, cloud-soft inside, generously stuffed with fragrant almond paste, topped with toasted almonds and powdered sugar. I ate it slowly by the window while the snow piled up on Rue Notre-Dame and honestly felt like the luckiest person alive. The baristas were friendly, the vibe warm and unhurried, and everything was flawless. If you're in Quebec City, make La Maison Smith non-negotiable (and budget time to visit at least twice). This location is a must for having a coffee during a romantic walk in Petit Champlain. You can sit on the terrace in the heart of Place-Royale, where Quebec City was founded. We ordered a pistachio Donut, Crepe, and coffee. Man, this donut- nothing I ever had... too good. I ordered more to have it for dessert after dinner. This casual and attractive café right on the corner of scenic Place Royale is a great place to stop for an afternoon pick-me-up, be it coffee or various indulgent sweets. For a light lunch, there are yummy sandwiches, quiches, and soups. There are other branches elsewhere in the city that are just as good, just not as scenic as this. read more

The front sidewalk seating and landscaping at the coffee shop and bakery could serve as a postcard for what makes Quebec City feel so European. The cafe chairs and tables are clustered closely together under an awning overlooking a pedestrian only square complete with a water fountain and church. It really doesn't get any better than this. During our breakfast visit, we picked out a few items to enjoy on a bench in the square. We opted for a slice of the quiche, pistachio latte, almond croissant, liege waffle and a flat white. I would say the warmed up waffle and quiche were the stars of the show. My pistachio latte was also delicious. The staff was friendly and kept the busy line moving. They also offer a variety of salads and sandwiches. The baked goods display was packed to the rim and almost overwhelming with the way they were crammed into the case. I've been stopping by here all week in the morning to grab some coffee. Even if the line is long, they get through everyone's orders very quickly. I've tried their vanilla latte, caramel latte, pistachio latte and matcha latte. All were very good! They do offer alternative milks. I opted for oat milk with some of the lattes I've ordered. Their caprese sandwich, pistachio pastry and almond croissant were very tasty! I recommend all three if they have it available. I noticed their pastries and sandwiches run out quickly. I can't say enough good things about the food here! I visited Quebec City with my parents this past December, and we walked into La Maison because it was warm and inviting. We ordered a few pieces of vegetarian quiche, zucchini soup, and a round of hot chocolate. I don't believe I've had such good food out in a while. The hot chocolate was absolutely delicious! They use real chocolate instead of the powdered stuff, and it's the best I've had. And we couldn't get over how rich the quiche was. The recipe was perfect, and it was baked beautifully. After the quiche, we had to try dessert! So I ordered a slice of pecan pie, and we shared a plate of macarons. Even the desserts were incredible! The coffee is pretty good. Though, the pistachio latte I got was not sweet at all. Had to add sweetener to it. Since the coffee shop is right outside the Notre Dame church in the Place Royale square, there's a lot of traffic that walks in to this place. You can expect the lines to be out the door during the summer. Luckily, we came to Quebec in October during the slower season. There are tables inside and a bar counter to people watch. Or you can sit outside on the patio to make it feel like you are in Paris al Fresca. There is no wait service, so you just order at the counter and bring your drink/food outside. read more

Tourists and locals alike clearly love this place as well as the other La Maison Smith cafés around QC. These aren't the best pastries though. Don't believe the reviews. They're good, but not great. They're made off-site and delivered to all of their shops and not created by masters of pastry. And there is a difference. I still came here a couple of times because it's far far better than Starbucks and conveniently located. I'd still recommend. But don't vacation in QC, eat these pastries, and then tell your friends about the authentic French pastries you ate. Go to a pâtisserie like Le Croquembouche and then tell them that. read more

I frequent this place every time I am in quebec city bc of the awesome location in the center of place royale in lower town quebec. But my last visit this August was slightly awful. Staff were rude and were messing up orders so much. They have a long wait pretty much at all times of day. But they also don't really care if they even get your order right. I heard of almost 4 people in front of me getting their orders wrong or mixed up. It took over 45 min to order and get my drink. And once I got it, it was cold, placed in a to go cup when I was given the option to drink there with a mug. (Like don't give me the option then ignore my request downright afterwards). It also was pretty bland and tasteless. You go here for the atmosphere but it's just for the location. It probably was my worst coffee experience in all of quebec city. If you're okay for long waits, crowds, messed up coffee orders and cold coffee. Then this is the place to go. read more

Prime location! This branch is located right at the plaza between Place Royale and the city mural. Around midday and afternoon the outdoor seatings are hard to get because of the tourists but at early morning it's relatively empty. I really enjoy the slightly chilly air with a cup of warm latte while watching people come and go. Views here are spectacular and the outdoor seating makes you feel like you're in Switzerland. Come early for breakfast and try to get a seat outdoors. You order your food/coffee up front and when your order is ready they'll call your name, and we only waited a couple of minutes before getting called up. The iced latte and hot latte was great, good quality coffee. We also ordered the chocolate croissant, small pizza, and the waffle which were all tasty. They offer up front to warm up pastries so we thought that was a lovely extra touch that they didn't have to offer so that was very nice of them. read more

La Maison Smith is an outstanding place to visit when you want to enjoy a morning coffee (and maybe a few pastries) near the Old Port in Quebec City. When we visited, it was just before 8am; the tour busses hadn't arrived yet so there wasn't much of a crowd in the area.  We sat at an outdoor table and very much enjoyed their coffee and a few delicious pastries.  Tip: My hands-down favorite pastry served here is the Apple Turnover! This is such a cute spot right in the middle of the place. The decor is also Uber cute and inviting! The barista was super sweet and suggested what was good on the menu. Croissant was chewy and not crispy, even after they warmed it up. The croissant is quite large and airy, but I just wasn't a fan of the chewy texture. I much prefer the croissants at Le Croquembouche and Paillard. I also had mixed feelings about the quiche Lorraine. On one hand the egg was creamy, fluffy, well balanced, and tasted delicious. Very generous portion, plenty of bacon that added a nice texture. Unfortunately, the crust was very bad. The edge was over-cooked and hard, and the bottom was too thick and the dough was still slightly raw. Too bad the crust ruined what could have been one of the best quiche I've ever had. Comparing to the quiche at both Le Croquembouche and Paillard, the egg filling is way better at La Maison Smith, however, obviously the crust is not as good. I will definitely go elsewhere for croissants... but I may come back again to give the quiche a 2nd chance hoping the crust will be better next time. read more

After looking it up online, I found that they had a good selection of pastries and sandwiches so we tried it! If you are a coffee snob like my wife and I are, this is the place for you. There was a reason why it was always crowded. My wife and I spent three nights in old Quebec and found this coffee shop by accident. It's located in the heart of downtown Old Quebec. My wife and settled on the hot Americano coffees and were very impressed. We chased it down once with a chocolate almond croissant and then another day with chocolate almond cookies. The prices were very reasonable and the staff was always very friendly. Their staff spoke excellent English so that should not be a concern. They also a large variety of coffees and teas, sandwiches, muffins, scones, bagels, etc. Walking around old town Quebec in December with a great cup of hot coffee.....priceless. read more

I love me some matcha latte, but I'm usually hesitant to order this beverage at a new location because it generally comes watered down. Not at this La Maison Smith! My latte was smooth, creamy, and had just the right amount of sweetness to it. If you have some time to sit and relax, sit outside and people watch. Grabbing a table may be difficult. Once you do find one, be prepared to clean it off as most tables had plates/trash still sitting on them. I also tried a few of their macarons, which I found to be just okay. Out of the three that I took a bite of, the chai was surprisingly my favorite. The chai flavor definitely came out. read more

Good amount of seating, offers free Wi-Fi and sandwiches if you are looking for proper coffee shop food other than pastries. The reason I didn't give more stars for this review is simply because it wasn't exceptionally unique. The menu offerings and quality of my order was average -- no wow factor. We were happy to find a place with great Americano coffee. Surprisingly, we had a few "not too great cups" of java on this trip so far. We also finally tried the popular Croque Monsieur (Canadian version of grilled cheese with oh so much more cheese!) and it did not disappoint! Wow, I can see why it is so popular. Of course, we don't know what to compare La Maison's Croque to but none the less, it was fantastic. We also tried a Croissant Aux Amandes (Almond Croissant) and a Chausson Aux Pommes (apple turnover type pastry). I love the croissant but did not care for the apple pastry as I have a preference for the American style with larger pieces of apple rather than a more pureed type filling. After walking around in old Quebec, we realized that this place had multiple locations. Prices were great too and the seating inside was comfortable.
