My family and I have always used LaLuz Bakery for our birthday cakes and have never had an issue before. That's why we didn't hesitate to order a special two-tier TikTok-themed cake for my niece's birthday on Saturday. Unfortunately, this time was very different. After picking up the cake and heading to the party, we discovered that the cake had completely caved in. The top tier slid off the bottom tier before we even opened the box. I took pictures immediately and contacted the bakery right away. I didn't ask for a refund--I simply asked if there was anything they could do to make it right. Instead, I was told that because the cake had left the store, there was nothing they could do. I even offered to return the damaged cake. Still, the manager on duty, Mario, said he couldn't help and would pass it on to his supervisor. We left the cake with them and walked out empty-handed--no replacement, no apology, no effort to resolve the issue. We ended up going to Sam's club buying two cakes($50 total with tax), and creatively combining them to save the party. Honestly, those cakes turned out better than what we originally purchased for $150.00 from La Luz This experience was really disappointing, especially considering the loyalty and money we've given LaLuz over the years. I'm leaving this review to let others know that if something goes wrong, you may not receive the customer service you'd expect--or deserve. Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere. One of the bakery shops I frequent that is super close by when I am in the area. Love trying out all the goodies. I always end up with bags of goodies when coming here specially the Conchas, you can never have too much for breakfast with your coffee. Best to come early morning when everything is still fresh. I am disappointed in their service. I called and placed a special order to be picked up this AM. I was told that it wasn't ready and it would be another 2 hours. It was unacceptable. I've placed special orders for LA Rosca the last three years only to be met with problems. The order has either not been ready or was sold out. I paid prior as suggested. This is poor service. This place is a real hidden gem. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside, OMG! When you come in you will be overwhelmed by the choices. The first time I went to the bakery I didn't know the routine, but I had another customer show me - when you walk in to the right is a rack that has round aluminum trays and tongs. You take a tray and tongs, and then go to the clear display shelves along the walls and to the baking racks in the middle of the bakery to get your pastries, breads, cookies, churros and so much more. All the pastries, breads, etc, are freshly baked and some of our favorites are the custard filled horns, the rice pudding turnovers (it sounds strange but it is delicious), the strawberry filled churros, and the the pecan muffins. The absolutely best is their tres leches cakes, they are available by the slice or as a cake in two different sizes. You can get them with fresh strawberries and other fruit. Not only are their tres leches cakes beautiful, but it is truly the best cake I have every eaten. This is now our go to place for all celebration cakes. If you like flan, you will love their flan cups that are available in a glass display case in the middle of the store, yummy! They are also known for their freshly made tamales, we tried the red ones last week and they were delicious, looking forward to trying the green ones next time. The staff are very nice and helpful, and the prices are very reasonable. This is a must for anyone who loves good pastries , cakes and breads. read more

This is the second time I get overcharged. The first time I was charged for for an extra "tamal" ( didn't bother to call). This second time happened on 02/13/2021, among other items, I asked for 3 pineapple tamales I only got 2 and they were strawberry, I called this time not satisfied with their response to stop by and get my order straight, not a refund or anything like that. First thing you feel when going into this place is...overhwelmed! What should you choose? The selection is staggering. Sweet buns galore, turnovers, cakes, flan, cookies, croissant stuffed with cream, cheese pastries, things that look like aspics that are stuffed with some sort of flowers (I have no idea what they are but they're sheer art!) They do fresh snow cones and cakes to order. Plus...and here it is...TRES LECHE cake...heavenly and soaked with sweet creamy milk. Unbelievably addictive. It's mostly self-serve, so you grab a pair of tongs and a platter and begin your adventure searching through case after case of these colorful treasures. And when you're through you discover you've got enough bakery for days and it only cost you like five bucks. I love this place and the staff who are super friendly. One of the women always has a smile and never hesitates to explain what's in any of the cakes or pastries and she always teaches me Spanish when I'm there. La Luz Bakery is a fine example of the kind of panaderia/Mexican bakeries you can find dotting the Chicago metro area. In Downtown Round Lake and about a block south of the Round Lake Metra station, this place serves the best tres leches cake in town. So grab a big round aluminum tray and a sparkling clean pair of tongs and load up from the big glass cases along the wall -- you might be surprised just how little this is going to cost you! As for myself, I'm still feeling my way through the items, not being overly familiar with the range of Mexican bakery -- but I don't worry, the staff there is very helpful if I don't know what something is. Little vanilla custard-filled crescents, crusty pineapple-stuffed pastries -- you can hardly go wrong! The place is usually busy, but everyone is friendly and the line moves along pretty good. As with all baked stuff, some items are much better when they're fresh, so ask if they are. read more

Historic Round Lake. If you sneeze, you may miss it. La Luz? Nomnomnomnomnomnom. It is the dream of fat little piggies and all those that appreciate mom & pop establishments. From the outside, this place is rather unassuming with the windows covered up - there are two doors, one for those entering and another for exiting. When you enter, you may question if you walked into the kitchen area - there are literally tall racks facing you (the kind with wheels and that hold like 15 trays vertically, which can be rolled in and out of walk-in refrigerators). Be not afraid, just follow the flow of foot traffic and do as the others do. There are no signs to show you what hte process is - but it's fairly simple. To your right, walk bout 5' and grab either a round aluminum tray or white plastic bin. Then grab a tong, which is hanging on a rack, along with 20+ other tongs. Then go back to the baking racks or the clear display shelves along the walls and fill 'er up. There are no price tags but you can pretty much be assured than for under $5, you can get about 6-8 items. This place has been our must-eat-must-Yelp list for some time, so when the weather was nice for driving, one lazy weekend, we headed to La Luz for a gluttonous trip. It was well worth the drive - super decadent options and some amazing custom cake (fresh, not overly sweet, generous use of strawberries, and friendly service). I'm not sure what to call these baked items, but the ones with some yellowish custard/flan, on a flaky croissant-like dough, and raisins? they were dee-lish. The apple turnovers are great and we can't wait to go back and try some more. Even arriving early, there were a lot of people (look to be locals, many of Hispanic origin) who were stocking up with mounds of stuff. So stop by if you're in the area and you'll not disappoint. I love going to this bakery. This location and the Mundelein location are excellent. I love how light most of the pastries taste and it's not overly sweet. The location in Round Lake is even better because u can just drive up to the parking spaces from the road and the traffic is moving fairly quickly so you usually find parking right away right in front of the bakery. This bakery is such a gem. I come here for donuts (for the kids) and all sorts of cream filled pastries for the "big kids". When you go in, it doesn't look very fancy. There are no places for you to sit down and eat but their baked goods are delicious. The donuts have a cinnamon taste to the bread and the cream filled pastries are not overly powerfully sweet. The pastries are light and yummy. It reminds me of pastries from France where it's just perfect with coffee. You might get someone at the register that doesn't speak English but they're totally friendly and sweet. I highly recommend this bakery! Go check them out. They also have delicious tres leches cake that you can pick up the day of and don't need to order ahead for the last minute birthdays or occasions. read more
