If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. Horrible discriminatory people - AND 2 are brown (bartenders) and 1 blonde (waitress). I'm pretty sure they did something bad with the food I ordered, by the way each staff kept looking back at me. The whole environment was strange and uncomfortable.
I was SO hungry after walking around Madrid all day, and this restaurant was just a few blocks from my hotel. My friends actually live on the same street as La Jauría. It was 9:00pm (21:00) and I wanted eat at a Spanish/Tapas restaurant, but I was solo that night. I was told that places have been better at take-away since the start of the pandemic.
I went to one popular place, but they were to busy to accommodate me. The next place I found on Yelp was La Jauría. The front bar was very busy, being a Friday night. I went to the bar and asked if they had take-away (in the best Spanish I could). The dark haired woman looks at the waitress, and looks back at me; says No. as she smirks with a patron in front of her.
I leave and try to Burger & Beer place, only they had a 15 minute wait and I was getting so weak.
So- I walk back into La Jauría, smile and say I'm dining in. There was one table with 2 Americans eating, and another group that was Spanish. It was very empty in the back dining area. With a few small tables later in the night.
I know it's not typical for Spanish people to see a single diner and also to eat a big meal for dinner. But with jet-lag and walking so much, I ordered a Bison Burger and Salad with Goat Cheese and Cranberries.
I see the bartender staff jump around after my order was place, running back and forth to the kitchen and giggling. I could TELL someting was wrong. And it's very sad to say that I was experiencing a lot of coughing (and some spitting) around me, when walking around - it became very obvious that the is majority country has a lot of fears from the Covid Pandemic.
It took a little while for my food to come, which seems typical culturally. My Salad came out and it was a very big portion and actually very good. The goat cheese bites were wrapped in phyllo dough and fried, there were candies walnuts, tomato, balsamic drizzle. However most of the salad was Frisée with just a little bit of baby lettuces. It was a bit hard to eat, but I was SO hungry and needed some vegetables, I didn't care. The front bar area started filling up a lot and seemed like a young crowd. I didn't see too many tapas orders though.
My burger came out 10 minutes later. The presentation looked great, fresh cheddar on top, a toothpick holding open the toasted bun. Leaf lettuce and bit slices of tomato on the plate, it also included hand-cut fries, and an artful smear of ketchup.
I forgot that burgers are cooked more rare in Europe and this was under medium-rare. The first bite taste great- fresh chopped bison of beef. I noticed the staff at the bar staring intently as I started eating the burger.
It all felt so strange.
I ate around the sides of the burger. Some bites tasted a bit gritty. About halfway through, I'm chewing and I notice something and pull out a short blonde hair from my mouth. I see the staff behind the bar laughing.
I stop eating and look underneath the meat, it's totally burnt and looks like something was smashed onto the bottom and then seared. I look at the bun and it's also burnt.
I stop eating and return back to the salad. During this, the American couple in front of me also ordered a lot of food- guacamole, flautas, and more. (I guess this place is actually American cuisine leaning.) The waitress was very nice to them, the other bartender (guy) went over to them with the check and I see him staring hard at my burger, while standing at the table in front of me. I don't see any other reason to continually stare at the back of the restaurant. I look him in the eye and he looks away quickly. I see him look back at my plate again.
The whole meal was about €30. I paid and left. I knew something was off and my stomach was strange the whole night. DO NOT GO to La Jauría if you're tourist. Especially an Asian tourist or person. Horrible people. Horrible place. I heard that they had a fire recently - must be karma. read more
