Yesssss, finally real Italian food in Italy! This should not be as difficult to find as it is, but sadly there are many restaurants (especially in heavily touristed areas) run by foreigners who clearly haven't the slightest idea what herbs and spices make up the quintessential Italian flavors. Frozen gnocchi tossed in tomato sauce straight out of the can does NOT count as authentic. If I sound like a pasta snob it's because I am. My family is Italian, so I'm used to the good stuff. I know it when I smell it. I was pointed in the direction of La Fraschetta after a truly frustrating gnocchi experience. Google was proving useless for determining where the locals went, so I popped into a sweet shop and asked the girl working where *she* liked to eat. She did not let me down. La Fraschetta is the real deal. I got the arabiatta and it was every bit as good as my Zia Maria used to make. House-made pomodoro sauce, rich in garlic and herbs with just the right amount of heat, topped off with ribbons of fresh parsley. Pasta had just the right amount of tooth to it. The price, 10 euro, was fair for the portion... and actually a couple euro lower than that travesty the other place had the nerve to call gnocchi. The ambiance is nice too. We came here on a Friday night around 10 PM (22:00) looking for good pizza! Their pizza was slightly burnt but crispy, which was nice in our opinion. I ordered the tonnarello alla boscaiola (homemade egg pasta with ham, mushrooms, and peas in a cream sauce). Both dishes were good, which is why the rating made it to two stars. The environment is warm (and I also mean literally as the front of the restaurant is heated by the giant stone pizza oven) and the decor feels traditional. The dried garlic and peppers along the walls draped in a red and white plaid told me it should be nice to stay as long as we'd like. Now, granted I wasn't in the best mood yesterday - perhaps I seemed a bit off putting? Maybe I said the wrong things? Maybe I shouldn't have attempted to say the fish in Italian?... But ultimately the service felt unwelcoming. The waitress said hello, asked if we wanted something to drink (we asked for 1L still water, we received 1L sparkling water), and left us for 5 minutes. When we flagged her down to order (as she was tending to other tables, both in English and Italian), she asked us to wait and grabbed a fellow waiter to take our order instead who also seemed to be short. Unfortunately my Italian classes have been over a decade ago at this point so I cannot day for sure, but I kept feeling like the owner (?), waiter, and waitress were all speaking and laughing about us at some point. I could very well be wrong. Either way, as we paid and left, we were not sent away with a "grazie, ciao" like previous tables. It was disappointing as it was our last night in Rome. First things first - PIZZA is only served for dinner!!! Don't look for pizza at lunch. I requested bruschetta instead. Well. I've posted a picture. A few herbs on top of sliced tomatoes which say on top of a piece of toast that had a drizzle of olive oil. The prosciutto with melon was a little sad and disappointing. The house red....well, it was ok. Maybe it was too close to stopping for the afternoon... maybe I should have walked further in off the Main Street... perhaps the comment of 'no pizza for lunch' should have been the tip. I had come to expect soooo much from the tomatoes in Italy. I now know that it's all in the preparation. Since I can't speak for the depth of the menu (there is pasta and pizza available) the 3 stars are given. I would suggest giving the restaurant a try during the dinner hours. I love this place with all my heart! Came here on a weekly basis when I lived in Rome. Fried cod-- unreal. Every single pasta dish I had here was excellent. Carbonara, amatriciana, penne all'arrabiata, spaghetti alle vongole. The tiramisu!!!!!!!! Massive helping of tiramisu and the best I found in Italy. The staff are absolutely lovely humans. House wine is great. Really can't go wrong here!!!! It's a must visit. I would give anything to be sitting at one of their checkered tablecloths right now! read more

Don't be fooled by their inconspicuous doorway (which you may miss if you're not careful) or the sign that says "pizzeria" - this restaurant is rustic, authentic, charming, extremely reasonably priced, friendly, and most of all sooooo delicious. And once you step inside you'll see that the dining room extends well inside the place. We loved it so much that we came here 2x, including our last night in Rome, for fear of being disappointed anywhere else. In our 2 visits, we had their outstanding spaghetti carbonara, excellent mussels & clams "soup" (per the English menu), spaghetti with seafood, cacio e pepe, veal saltimbocca and oxtail stew. The golden yellow carbonara was generously speckled with perfectly crisped, meltingly fatty guanciale pieces. This is a must-have dish here. So amazing. The "soup" was an enormous bowl mounded with mussels and clams in delicious wine-infused tomato-based broth. It was the cioppino of my dreams. And the waitstaff/owners were so friendly that we were greeted as if we were family when we returned the second time. Vino rosso della casa and tiramisu were also fab! read more

I really liked the pasta with cream peas mushroom and tomato sauce, but it's really low on everything but pasta. The mixed vegetable pizza is good but there's too much spinach and the spinach tastes bad (reminds me of frozen spinach). Total €23. read more

I thought the food here was really good and on the night we were there, and there were a mixture of Iocals and tourists making the atmosphere festive. My sister in law took us here on a recommendation from a local who is a patient of hers. I really enjoyed my spaghetti con vongole, and my husband really liked his cacio e pepe, and my sister in law loved her dish as well. Next time we visit Rome we will be stopping by. read more

La Freschetta Trattoria is by far one of the best restaurants in Rome! The food is outstanding and freshly made to order. Each night I ate here there was a sweet lady chef cooking everything from scratch and doing it with a smile in her face! The brick oven pizzas are outstanding and so is everything else! The mussels and clams were some of the most fresh that I have ever tasted and at the same time, the most I have ever been served at one time! (No fishy smell or taste!) The caprese is to die for and is made with fresh buffalo mozzarella, which melts in your mouth. The wine selection was on the smaller side, but all very well selected. We indulged in the Nero D' Avola, which was absolutely delicious before and after it breathed! The BEST part of this whole encounter was the staff. Omar, our server and Muhammad, our other helper were so kind hearted and so excited to see us when we came back for the second time in a week! We felt so taken care of and treated like the locals. Used to be much better. My wife had a pizza yesterday with inedible prosciutto. It was unusually fatty and tough. I had the carbonara which was too peppery for my taste. The waiter said it was traditional Roman, but I don't recall having such peppery carbonara anywhere else in Rome, and I've spent a lot of time here. I think there's been a significant change here compared to 2015, and not for the better. read more
