"La Marguerite" galette - tomato, bocconcini (mozz) and basil
    Sarah H.

Next time you're in St. Heliers and in need of a "level up" from your standard cafe offering, head to La Fourchette. Located on a side street off Tamaki Drive, this little gem could easily be missed by AKL beach-side strollers. No, it doesn't boast the Rangitoto and sea views enjoyed by some neighboring cafes, however, what differentiates LF is both the quality of their offerings and the authentic french atmosphere they've created. Service: Although efficient and friendly, the servers seemed a bit disorganized (could be due to the swelling crowd on Mother's Day, though) Cuisine: The gallette (I chose La Marguerite) was delicious, desserts are gorgeous (including macarons!) and they definitely take note of presentation. It's not cheap, but for St Heliers and the quality, one really can't complain. Beverages: Altezano brothers coffee and full bar menu with some interesting, unique cocktails. Miscellaneous: They have a little shop with french grocery items and some homewares, chocolates, jams, teas etc. They also do high tea for $45 with advanced bookings, which is good to know if you are planning some sort of fancy occasion. À bientôt! ;)

The macaroons here melt in your mouth. There is a thoughtfulness to the service here - they are lovely. Beautiful mains and reasonable prices in St Heliers. The kumura bread with butter is divine....get it!!

This little tucked away cafe in St heliers is a Gem that I had no idea of. The setting is beautiful and chic and the salted caramel tart I has for afternoon tea was beautiful. It's a little far away for me to go back but if I was in the area this is where you would find me.

I have been here several times for coffee in the mornings. But I wanted to try the restaurant before I could post a review. I came here on a Tuesday night for a late dinner. Our waiter was so knowledgeable and attentive (and authentically French if that matters). He informed us that they have pizza specials on Tuesdays (buy one get one) and we went for it. It was three of us and we ordered four pizzas: the seafood, spinach and mushroom, BBQ chicken, and the Hawaiian. All of them were thin crust with a generous amount of toppings. I really enjoyed all of them, and even the next day as left overs my spinach/mushroom pizza was delicious. I would love to go back and try their full menu. I must say I was very impressed with the service and really the whole dinning experience was great.

    Review Highlights - La Fourchette

On Saturday it was a lovely day and I had a friend visiting so I took her to La Fourchette French bistro in St Heliers which is both a patisserie and restaurant.

There is a large cheese room with glass viewing area in the main dining area which adds to the ambience. There is plenty of seating to enjoy the limited menu - everything we tasted was delicious. The place was almost full when we arrived and totally full by the time we were served. We had pretty decent coffees with palmiers which were super crispy and perfectly sweet. We actually went back for more. The cheese and ham croissant was flakey, warm with gooey Camembert and a generous amount of ham. I had the braised ox tail on custard which is served with a few slices of fresh baguette. The braised ox was gelatinous and salty, the custard smooth and creamy set into the serving bowl, on top were pickled mushrooms adding a much welcome tangy refreshing way to cut through all the other richness. I'm not usually a fan of micro greens, but these were pretty tasty fresh and added texture. DELICIOUS! I only wish the serve was larger. Will definitely return because I saw many tasty looking soups being served and want to try more.

Moved on to kingfish Andre/ appetizer which was served with a coconut/ cream and delicate sauce. The fish was raw but a delicious flavor combination Then the lamb !! Wow ! Served with a delicious, reduced glaze and delicious trimmings. The meat fell off the bow and delivered an amazing flavor The mane was venison medallion steak which Was served rare, but just tender as can be and also excellent. We finished with the caramel and cheese based little tart that you can see in the photo, which was really just amazing! We also had good chocolate dessert which was a little bit of a misnomer because it was mostly chocolate shavings and a little puffy sponge type chocolate thing. No heavy chocolate heavy flavor. Very interesting. The decor is plain andofern with a lovely garden outside Servers were knowledgeable and efficient - refined I would say A truly memorable meal

Neither of us had been to Antoine's but have both heard lots about owner and chef Tony Astle. (who happened to be working the kitchen that night) The reservation went smooth, until they called back to confirm the afternoon we were due to dine. I missed the call but called the number back guessing what/who called I got a really confused staff member on the other end of the line who barely spoke intelligible English who was sure I wanted to book a table of six (when I was calling back to confirm my booking for a table of two) We arrived still laughing at the strange phone call, and stood at the steps after knocking on the door (??? yeah we wtf'd) ushered in to the little waiting room (??? again wtf) we peeled our coats off to have them stored away and shown to our (very small) table covered in white linen... in a bookish dining room that felt rather grandmotherly... the ambiance was hushed whispers and "don't touch anything, and sit up with your back straight"... The kind of fancy pants pompatry that I feared as a kid. The food... it wasn't outstanding certainly not what you'd expect for $$$$$... with all the great food and dining that's out there in Auckland today... my salmon gazpacho sort of looked at its feet shoved its hands in its pockets shrugged and heaved an apologetic sigh. The duck l'orange was boring and coyly sweet and a little dry... The oxtail was pretty bold and flavorful and wonderfully aromatic, fall off the bone delicious but it wasn't enough to redeem the rest of the experience. The dessert was pleasant at best. The wait staff was servile and theatrically trite... and didn't know when asked simple questions regarding the dishes... but knowledge about the wine was pretty good once you get past the thick accents. The strangest moment of all was at the end of the night going to pay... this place doesn't take eftpos, and the credit card went through an old zip zap (kids do you even know what this is???) and you're handed a hand filled receipt. It completed our time warp and we headed back through the doors to a world post Robert Muldoon and Margaret Thatcher. Pockets $445 (inc 120 for wine) lighter hardly feeling like we got our moneys worth... perhaps that is the cost for time travel.

There was only one other party there and we got some little quinoa salad appetizers care of the chef which were fresh and light. The pulled oxtail was big and impressive for a starter, and quite tender and juicy. The ricotta and spinach ravioli was much smaller and the purees were light and dampened the strongish ricotta flavor to make the whole dish more subtle. I personally would've preferred something a bit tangy to counter the ricotta, rather just make it less ricotta-y. For mains, the Akaroa king salmon was seasoned and cooked PERFECTLY (crispy skin but still deep pink and juicy on the inside and the whole thing flaked apart)... I love the taste and texture of salmon and the chef really brought out the best of the fish. The large amount of lemon potato that came with it looked like a sauce or soup, but had the texture of thick potato puree and tasted pretty creamy. I liked it, but it was heavy because of the cream and felt like a lot more than an equivalent amount of mashed potatoes (good if you're hungry, but didn't make the dish feel very balanced). The Hawkes Bay lamb scotch fillet was cooked not quite consistently, as a few pieces were medium and some were medium-well. We prefer medium-rare. The stack of cooked veggies that came with it was juicy and flavorful, though. For desserts, the crème brulee was PERFECT and using manuka honey instead of sugar meant it was less sweet, which we preferred. The jasmine infused pineapple with coconut three ways was really nice to eat slowly and enjoy all the different flavors and textures... I quite liked the chewy coconut biscuits, especially when soaked in the juice at the bottom. Overall, really enjoyed our dining experience there. The waitress and chef were really nice to have a chat with on the quiet evening. The dishes were really well priced for the quality, even without a voucher. We'll definitely head back at some point. I want to give them a 4.5, but will round up in this case.
