After a handful of subpar meals at well reviewed spots in Tuscany, we were leary about trying these guys. Aside from not being on Yelp, they have a listing on a popular travel site with so many positive reviews from people with only 1 review that I could have sworn they were all fake. But no! This place is truly spectacular! From start to finish our lunch was amazing. We ordered the traditional Tuscan pork chop served with tomatoes, olives, onions, bacon, and fennel seeds in a red wine sauce (it also came with white beans in tomato sauce), the veal scallopini with a cream and mushroom sauce, served with a side of home fries, and the spaghetti with artichokes, garlic, and olive oil. First off, the pork chop was ridiculously flavorful. With every bite of that perfectly cooked chop I was savoring the sweet tomato and onion, the bite of the black olive, the distinct fennel taste, the smokiness of the bacon, and of course let's not forget red wine. Just sensational and so great that I had to sop up the remaining sauce and juice with their awesome crispy bread. While I only had a few bites of it, it was immediately clear that the scallopini was also excellent; the meat was expertly prepared and very flavorful while the sauce was silky smooth, with a vibrant mushroom flavor. The home fries were a great accompaniment too. I hate home fries back home because almost nobody cooks them well. They're typically sitting around on the side of a grill just being kept warm and usually lacking a good solid crispiness. These were friggin stellar. Freshly cooked for the entree with the ideal amount of crispiness (I suspect they cooked them in a cast iron pan) along with a hint of flavorful butter, salt, and pepper. Finally, the spaghetti was a super simple dish, but a joy to eat. Fresh artichokes, heaps of garlic, good solid olive oil, and a light sprinkle of parm made this a keeper. After 3 great dishes there was no way we weren't getting dessert. We went with the panna cotta and a house made apple cake. Both were absolutely fantastic. Hell, even the coffee was great! I started with the latter, which was delicious -- but the powerful flavour of cheese and the egg yolk drowned out the chard. My wife's potato flan was quite nice, but it arrived buried under a heap of truffle shavings that tasted of nothing in particular. My main was a special of roast suckling pig with potatoes and a savoury tuile made with the pork drippings. The tuile was gratuitous -- a chef-y touch that didn't actually taste very nice. The suckling pig was beautifully cooked but the potatoes were weirdly inconsistent; some crisp and others mushy. Il Fornacino is a good restaurant that would be the best restaurant around in most places, but the five-star bar is set pretty high in Tuscany. But the prices were very modest and the wine selection was great. It's a tremendously good value for what it offers.

While we waited for our order, the table was graced with the round things in my photo. They were balls of bread dough, about4cm in diameter, baked, and tasting very cheesy, although I could not see the cheese in them. Delicious, and free, and a basket of bread was served, too. The food was fresh, the owner, who served us, was as welcoming as could be. We had artichoke flan (currently in season) and it was amazing! We had a selection of cured meats with cheese, bruschetta, and fresh breads for an appetizer with house red wine. Every bite was better than the previous and we nearly licked the plates clean! For primi plati (entree) I had the gnocchi with potato and pear and cheese in a sauce - I didn't know what it was really but it was made fresh that morning so I ordered it and was not disappointed. Delicious! My wife had the Tagliatelle con porcini - also we were told was made fresh that morning. She can't stop talking about it - best pasta she has ever had. They even had free fresh water and a huge and clean bathroom. We closed the meal with an espresso which was the perfect end to a delightful meal. Back then, I ordered the Osso Buco, Lasagna, and Tiramisu--and I still remembered how incredible everything was. So, of course, when I returned nearly 10 years later, I had to order the same meals... and yes, I said meals! Fabrizio, the same server who took care of me in 2017, asked, "Are you sure you want two dinners?" I told him, "Yes! I want to try them both." Fast-forward to 2026: I walked back in two days ago, reminded Fabrizio of our conversation, and told him I was ordering both again. He immediately started laughing. Some things never change! My boyfriend ordered the pappardelle and instantly fell in love with it. We also shared a delicious cheese and meat platter and, of course, finished with Tiramisu. Nearly 10 years later, Pensavo Peggio still holds a special place in my heart. Highly recommend this cute little spot!
