They removed equipment that was well-liked and restricted a significant portion of the space and equipment from use, effectively eliminating it unless you opt for personal training sessions, as this area is exclusively for them! The spa remains out of service since they reopened after a two-week shutdown for the "remodel." Consequently, from September until now, we've been unable to use the hot tub during one of the coldest starts to New England's long winters! LA Fitness gym in Stoneham is a pretty decent gym with Pros and Cons. I recommend LA Fitness gym for the facility. For the benefits... the gym is big and spacious, has nice amenities (sauna, pool, and hot tub), and recently got a big remodeling makeover. The facility looks much nicer. For the downsides... the gym is not a very friendly and sociable place; and not a place to make new friends. And the staff at the gym is usually friendly when you're signing up but after you're a member they ignore you. Stoneham might be a geographical location of unfriendly people. Before I joined LA Fitness gym, I went to BSC gym in Woburn for a good 7 years before the location closed down shortly after the pandemic. Boston Sports Club gym was awesome! A staff member would always say Hello when you walk in the gym when you scan your card. I used to say hi to dozens of people at the gym and chat briefly occasionally. Lots of staff, trainers, members and me were connected on social media Instagram and would view and click like each other's posts and stories. BSC gym was the best gym I've been to! LA Fitness gym has a very different atmosphere of people. Normally when you walk in during the evening hours after 6pm to scan your card, they ignore you. One staff member walks to the other side of the desk and turns around so he won't see you, another staff member usually walks over to the customer service area when people walk in, and another staff member sits at the computer occupied on his cell phone. The only person that says hello to members that walk in is the Operations Manager Nicolas if he's not overly busy, is the only friendly person there, and leaves at 6pm. When I used to go in after 6pm, I didn't get a hello for at least 3-4 or 6 months and ignored daily by the front desk staff. Nowadays, I basically try to get in before 6pm while Nicolas is still there and it's a pleasant atmosphere; and before the antisocial staff comes in to cover the check-in area for the night. Also, one day on the gym floor last year I said Hi to a staff member (Asst GM) and he walked right passed me and just ignored me. Maybe he was having a bad day, I'm not sure. Also, a lot of LA Fitness staff are afraid to be connected to one another on social media Instagram. Most of them have 1,000+ Instagram followers, probably 100's of people they don't even know. But when a member sends a friend request to be connected and get to know one another, they get nervous with adding you. It's also not a friendly place with members. There are only a few people I say hi and chat briefly with and a majority of them are former BSC members that started going here too. Most members try not to make eye contact when you walk by them and some are occupied on their cell phones. One day when I was working on chest workout for the day, the first machine I always use is the incline bench press machine and there's only 2 of them. Both of them were occupied by members and both of them were using their cell phones while I was waiting behind them. I looked up at the clock and they were using their phone for a whole 5 minutes then finished their last set and left. I leave my cell phone in the locker when I workout so I'm not distracted and not delaying other member's workouts. Also, when another member left the bench press machine, he left his cell phone there. I used the bench press after him and thought he might come back to grab his phone but he didn't. I brought it over to him when I finished working out and asked if it was his. He grabbed the phone and threw it in his bag and said it was his. Very rude and not even a thank you. I should have just left his phone on the floor and he could pick it up from lost and found if someone turns it in. I've been trying to ask around people I know to join the gym as referrals so I have more familiar people there to say hi to. Unfortunately, most people are happy with their own gyms or it's too far for them. Aside from being a very unfriendly location, it's a very nice facility. The renovations and new lift room are what drew me in initially to join, as well as the sauna. About a week into my membership the sauna went down and stayed down for at least a few months, I eventually stopped checking. Now the hot tub has been down for months with the same lack of explanation. Same deal when equipment goes down, they slap a sign on it that says it's scheduled for repair, and it sits there for weeks to months. All that said, the equipment gets the job done, but do not fall for the personal training!!! I inquired about training when I was first joining. I asked the cost up front, but was pushed to do a trial session with a trainer right then and there. I said yes because I was genuinely interested in considering training. The workout went well and I really liked my trainer. They brought me back to the desk and showed me the different packages with pricing, WAY more than I was expecting. Again, why I wanted to know pricing before doing a session, but they know what they're doing. The trainer and the personal training manager proceeded to sit across from me and stare at me while I contemplated the options. I asked if I could have some time to think about it, as it was extremely expensive (at least to me), and was a 9 month commitment. They said that the offer was only valid that day since I had done the trial session. I understand I could've said no, but felt very pressured with both employees looking at me, and feeling like I didn't want to waste the trainer's time. I signed up and ended up regretting it. About 6 weeks into my training, I was starting to build a good routine with my trainer, and she quit due to poor management practices. I was frustrated but understood her position, and decided to stick it out. I was assigned a second trainer, who was also very nice and good at what he did. He ended up quitting after another 6 weeks. I'm not sure why he quit, and definitely don't place blame towards him. I was assigned a third trainer and looked to schedule a session, and she was only available 2 days per week at random times, whereas my other trainers were flexible for their clients schedules. I ended up just buying out my contract to get rid of the headache. I wish it could've worked out, but the whole point of personal training is to have one trainer that evaluates your starting point and works with you through your journey. Having to start over with someone new every 6 weeks is not fair to clients paying a lot of money, and is not beneficial having to start their journey over to adapt to different training styles. DO NOT EVER COME HERE! I cancelled my membership in person on July 30th, 2024 and was told my membership was cancelled, yet found out recently they have been charging me for the past year and misinformed me that my membership was cancelled when in actuality it was not. On July 30th, 2024, the manager on the floor at that time was the one who helped me, though I did not catch his name. He sat me down by his desk and proceeded to try to convince me to stay, even offering a free personal training session. I declined, and the conversation lasted around 20-30 minutes as he told me he was processing my member cancellation. He clearly stated to me that he completed my membership cancellation and I was "all good to go" and would receive a confirmation of my cancellation via email. The email unfortunately never came, and I did not discover the recurring charges until June 15th of this year. I went back to this location on June 25th, 2025 and wanted to speak with the club manager about the fraudulent charges over the past year. I spoke with Kay, who was the manager, and told him about the situation. Kay told me that he saw on his computer that I did attempt to close out my membership on July 30th, 2024 on his end. He told me to call the LA Fitness billing department, and I asked for a printout of what he was seeing on his desktop so I could present it as evidence when talking to the billing team. He denied me a printout of what he was seeing, and assured me that if he was able to see it on his end, then the LA fitness billing team would no doubt be able to see the attempted cancellation on July 30th, 2024 as they share the same system. I then left and called the billing department, and I spoke with Emily from member services. I spoke to a representative Emily from Member Services at 3:37 EST on June 16th on a recorded line and she repeatedly denied seeing the attempted cancellation on July 30th 2024, though we confirmed with Kay, the club manager, that there was an attempted cancellation on that date just moments prior. Emily then tried to tell me that they had sent an email on July 30th, 2024 containing a form that I needed to print, fill out, and mail to confirm my cancellation and that it was not a receipt of my cancellation, but I never received the email. I was informed by the manager who cancelled my membership that this email would be a cancellation receipt. Nonetheless, the email never arrived and Emily repeatedly told me that this email should have arrived in my inbox, though I checked my spam and trash and confirmed my email with her. I have repeatedly asked Emily to let me speak with a manager from the billing department and she kept denying me to speak with one, assuring me that although she was from the member services department, she was still the best person to talk to. After some back and forth, we did not reach any solution. She refused to refund me the nearly $300 they have been fraudulently charging me for. I then was informed by Emily that only operations managers at LA fitness have the authority to cancel memberships. Then she told me that "the manager [who I spoke to on July 30th, 2024] was not the operations manager and did not have the authority to close out [my] account." If he did not have the authority to close out my account, he should have told me to wait for someone who had the authority to cancel my account and have them do it for me. Yet, instead of handling this issue responsibly, the person I spoke to on July 30th, 2024 erroneously told me that the membership was cancelled although it was not. It is absolutely ridiculous that I was told by the manager on July 30th, 2024 that I would receive a confirmation email of my cancellation, and then being told by Emily that it was not a confirmation email of my cancellation and never receiving any sort of email from them. I find it unethical that I was repeatedly being charged a large sum of money ($300) for an employee from LA Fitness's mistake. I will never join LA Fitness again and don't ever come here unless you want to lose hundreds of dollars. read more

Been going to this gym for years and it has been going down hill. Equipment is rusty and gross, good luck finding a machine because the place is always crowded from open to close. If something is out of service it won't be fixed for months and the men's locker room is beyond a health hazard. It's so bad that you carry that stench with you all the way home. The janitors do nothing but only vacuum the rug that never has been physically cleaned. No AC, a lot of members hog the machines for a very long time so don't bother going before work. Run down and bare bones. The gym has plenty of weights, but is generally just kind of ick. Some of the functional training equipment in the "turf" area is reserved for personal training clients...so don't expect that you'll have access to everything you see. For a while we had a single membership that let you bring a guest every time, forever, for free. That alone as a financial strategy tells you everything you need to know about this place. My husband and I are desperately waiting for it to go out of business and get leveled by a better gym. I have been a member of this gym for several years. It is in a good location and is a pretty good size. They have a large open-weight and machine section, decent cardio section (treadmills, bikes, elliptical, stair master, rowers), a little back area for core/mat section, three class rooms (2 large, 1 with FT spin bikes), a basketball court, Raquet ball rooms, a pool, the "pt section" at the front, and locker rooms with showers, sauna, lockers, etc. As far as the quality, it needs some TLC. I think there is A maintenance guy, for a large territory. A lot of the equipment is older and needs maintence - squeaky, worn out, not working, etc. I have not used the pool, but it seems to close a lot. They have some decent classes, however the timing is not great. There is like one super early class twice a week and then like 8/9 AMs and then none until 5/6/7. They have personal training available, which of course costs extra and is overpriced. It is good for accountability or guidance if you need that though. There is one trainer who has been there for several years, the rest have changed out over the years. The staff is friendly enough. I can't speak to current memberships as I have an older plan, but I can tell you they, like most gyms, have those sketchy practices. For example, they charged me for a cancelled plan a couple years ago and also most recently did not process the cancellation (both times were for personal training). I think they are in a good spot and have a good amount of equipment but could do a better job with keeping the place nicer. read more

Place is trash. I recently transferred over from BSC as they closed their Woburn location. Most of my basketball buddies joined this gym because it was the closest in proximity. Welp...the basketball court has had a leak in the roof for about a MONTH now. Zero urgency in getting it fixed. Few weeks ago, they decided to "finally" replace the ripped nets...when did they decide was the best time?? 7am when the gym first opened? Perhaps 10pm when the courts are empty? Nope. I went in to do a free pass recently and I spoke with Mike, who helped me eventually sign up on a membership plan. He talked me through the different options and such, and asked if I had any questions. He was friendly, professional and showed me around briefly as I've never been to LA Fitness or the Stoneham location before. I work nearby so it was more of a convenience decision as I'm not really into gyms (been working out at home). There's a lot of cardio equipment so I didn't have to wait to use anything, even when it was pretty busy. My only suggestion is to include more of those sanitation wipes nearby, as sometimes you have to look for the cleaning supplies or just go back near the front to grab some. As far as Covid goes, some people wear masks and others don't. It seems like Stoneham is more lax about masking, at least in my experience. I have one on me when I go there in case I feel that I need it. Although I joined more out of convenience, I will say that I'm overall happy and do think it's worth it so far. I did see that on Google Reviews they're trying hard to update certain things (upholstery on machines, etc.) so it's nice to see they are clearly making improvements and listening to feedback. read more

I refuse to leave a one star review when the gym itself needs only a few small improvements and the staff were very nice and understanding. I write this review with empathy and respect, but I also will say that I cancelled my membership without having worked out there in large part due to the agoraphobia and germaphobia at seeing no one wearing a mask and there being no easily-accessible sanitation to wipe down the machines. I think this particular place would benefit from the following adjustments, at least in my opinion: 1. Put wipe down stations with paper towels and general purpose cleaner and trash bins at every 25 feet or so. This would make it very convenient for everyone to wipe down the machines. At the moment there only appears to be a single station at the front of the gym and I have the feeling not everyone is going back to wipe down the machines as they use them with the amount of legwork required. 2. I spent an hour and a half being sold a fitness program for approximately 200 dollars a month that I had no chance of considering at the moment. I was there to have a bit of an upgrade from my current gym, you know? Not pay for a full comprehensive fitness plan on the spot. I think it would be a much more constructive use of time for the price of this fitness plan to be made very clear from the get-go to save the pitch. (Something along the lines of "Here's what you get with the membership, but would you be interested in an additional personalized plan?"). I was under the impression that such a plan was included in the price until the end of the pitch, and I can't help but feel a little deceived. 3. I can't speak for the pool, but perhaps an hours chart available online would be of use for people who want to see when the pool is being maintained or taken up by a class. I'm sure it would be disappointing to bring your pool equipment only to not be able to go. The place looked relatively clean, definitely no nightmare like some of the reviews have been suggesting, and most of the machines seemed to be working? No one was waiting to use a machine during 5pm when I went in, so that seems to have been fixed. I definitely got the impression that the staff there cared about my fitness and that there was genuine empathy for my situation - believe me, I didn't walk in just to waste people's time. My last concern on the mask situation was that very few if any people were wearing them, which leads me to think there might be some heckling from old men going on causing people to take them off. That's a problem at a lot of places though and it's hard to stop without a full-on enforced mandate. Overall I hope things improve, because the facility itself looks amazing at first glance. Told me that I was paying for a 50min personal training session (ask him several times) when come to find out when the session hit my app I seen that they were only 25min sessions. Immediately went to the gym the next day to talk to Sam. He promised me he will call corporate to fix this. Followed up several times and still not fixed. At that point (1 week later) tried to cancel my contract which he told me I can "cancel any time" but I couldn't. I tried to fight this with their corporate office but they stated there's nothing I can do. I would have to pay 6 months of payments ($1440) to get out my contract. Sam is trash. He's a scammer. I was really impressed wlth how courteous and professional the assistant manager Ender is. The facility is clean the staff courteous and the equipment in good shape. I am an amputee, so I usually end my workout sooner than my my buddies my boy Ender was always quick to bring a chair if there were none available. The kid rocks! If you're looking for weights, the place is OK, though it gets crowded in the afternoon and evening - plan on settling for a second or third choice of equipment. Cardio machines - particularly the ellipticals - are REALLY in need of some maintenance. Most of them look seriously beat up, and many wobble, rumble, or squeak (loud enough to cut through soundproof headphones). Bathrooms and locker rooms could use ventilation improvements. read more

I've trained in many gyms in my years and this one is ok. It has some minor issues bullet points below. 1. When you place plates on a machine take them off, we are not you mom or dad (respect you put them on take them off). 2. Dumbbells, you grab one bring it across the gym, God knows why! (Bring them back) 3. Dumbbells, you take them place them back to the right place do not grab 50lbs and because your just lazy you drop them beside the 5lb rack. 4. This gym is a joke! I have been a member for close to a year but canceled my membership today. I joined when gyms reopened with restrictions due to covid and 50% of the equipment was tagged not to use, which I understand. Since gyms could resume full operation, about 70% of the treadmills are broken as well as about 50% of the rest of the equipment. Put that aside, the gym is filthy everywhere. Don't dare go into the locker rooms. They smell and are disgusting. If you look at any equipment, besides the dust, you see all spit and saliva on the machines. Never washed. When you report the issues, they tell you it's out of their hands, corporate will not allow things to be done or fixed. Maybe corporate should come do a tour and perhaps shut them down. During Covid when masks were required, about 50% of the patrons didn't follow the rule and wasn't addressed so I froze my membership a few times. Another member who was scammed into signing up for a personal trainer! I was advised by PTD Sam McClain to sign up for a month to month PT contract, as I will soon be leaving for the military. Sam quickly moved me into working out with another trainer- who was absolutely amazing! After less than a month, my trainer was let go without notice, and I still have not been contacted by anyone at LA Fitness to set me up with a new trainer. I found out that VP ROB MORELLO knew about his former employee Sam falsely advising myself & many other customers into signing up for contracts that didn't exist. I'm now being told I'm locked into a 12 month contract that I'll have to pay in order to break, and the Vice President is too afraid to pick up the phone to own up to his mistakes. Don't waste your time or your money. This place is as much of a joke as the people they put in charge. read more

LA Fitness is cheap and classes are included, but that's really all that it has going for it. I have 3 major complaints with this club. At any given time, there are a TON of machines with out of order signs. I've been to the club before when over half of the treadmills were out of order. That's just not ok. They need to upgrade their equipment in a big way. Second, the pool is so over chlorinated that you stink when you leave the pool, even after you shower. The showers are absolutely disgusting. I posted a few pictures. Consistently full of huge hairballs in the drains, on the floor, everwhere. Half used bars of soap all over the place, and slime all over. I'm not super picky, but they are really really nasty. And the locker rooms have been under construction for what seems like forever. I have been a member since 2012. Facilities are ok, but the fact that they allow members to take loud phone calls and listen to music/watch videos on speakers is ridiculous. I listen to music/shows on my iPhone, when I have headphones. I have 2x said something to the staff there. I was told specifically to mention it to a staff member who would ask the member to refrain from listening on their speaker. Why should I have to do this each time? Why can't they put a sign up asking members to take their calls in the entrance area or outside and to please wear headphones? I have also reported to manager that a member was taking photos in the sauna, an activity I believe is illegal. They said they'd put up a sign but I haven't returned to the sauna because of that experience. The gym should be a place where we can all work out and be considerate to each other. And there are less-expensive alternatives. read more
