I'm not the hugest fan of tapas, especially the way they do it in the States, as it just seems like an excuse to give you less food for more money while not really filling you up. It's hit and miss in Spain as well, apparently in Madrid they have discovered a way to stay solvent while offering FREE tapas included with a purchase of a drink. Very similar to aperitivos in Milan. Naturally this means a lot of cheap, fat-on-carb type stuff gets doled out, but it's free, so can't complain. El Tigre is the most well-known with locals, tourists and study-abroad types all getting in on the action, but La Esquina de Eusebio is totally better. Not only is the booze cheaper, but whereas the dudes at El Tigre will hand you a plate of stuff they pick out, La Esquina will just put out trays of tapas and it's completely self-serve. It's the usual rotation: sausage rounds, tuna, salami, baguette slices with an array of cured pork and cheese-based toppings. You never know what the bartender will pull out next from under the counter. La Esquina, being located somewhat out of the way from the city center, is also significantly less crowded and has more of a neighborhood vibe than El Tigre, with random-ass taxidermy adorning the walls, a selection of eccentric older clientele holding birthday celebrations, a football match basically always on in the background. Seriously, if I lived anywhere near there I would never leave. read more
