We went on a Tuesday and took advantage of one of their specials. $5 off the guacamole with housemade chips for the table, and a taco trio with (1) campechano del mar with mahi mahi, shrimp, chorizo, pico de gallo, and chipotle aioli (2) churrasco grilled steak with caramelized onions, serrano chimichurri, and avocado (3) Ahi tuna taco with crispy peanut slaw, avocado, and horseradish crema. We ended with some tres leches con rompope for dessert, filling up our stomachs. Everything was packed with flavor! We didn't have a reservation, but were quickly seated at a small table in the back room next to the bathrooms. The service was fast and friendly. Cocktails were very good, and the food was excellent: we enjoyed the guacamole, then split a taco trio plate (Tampiqueno, Del Mar and Pancita Ahumada) and a side of rice and beans. The best taco was the pork belly (Pancita Ahumada). The only downside to the evening was the poor air conditioning and constant bathroom access. I had a hunch dinner was going to be good last night. But, La Dama exceeded our dining expectations in every way. As we walked into the bustling restaurant, the decor was so authentic and vibrant. Excitement for our meal grew as the table next to us was shouting expletives in how wonderful things were tasting, "it's so f-ing good, it's so f-ing good". If the expletives weren't proof enough, they offered us a pre-sampling of all items on their table to help guide our ordering of which we gladly accepted as we began our decision-making journey. Our server, Alexa, was a cultural guide to all dishes. She has a true passion for the food and a knowledge that guided each of us, based on interests and taste profiles. Even when challenged by one of more adventurous diners to "choose my entree for me", she excitedly walked us through her top menu items and all they stood to offer her. Her cultural expertise was an instant sell and boy, was she not wrong. She was dilligent, attentive and truly made our dining experience on-of-a-kind. The food spoke for itself and it shouted, "I'm f-ing good!" We did not shy away with filling the table. We started with the guacamole and chili rellano, both which were bowl-licking worthy, that as the server came early to remove the plates, my friend exclaimed "we aren't done with that!" as so we could scoop every last bit. The mains were the stars of the show. The salmon paired with a vibrant, yet mellow beet puree and it was cooked to perfection. The taco selection has meat that tasted slow cooked and tender. The lamb shank was a visually spectacular and the tastes aligned, the sauce was rich and bold. The pork pibil was falling off the bone tender and full of flavor. We came on a Tuesday and definitely recommend it -- $5 margaritas and $5 off guac were a nice bonus and a great way to kick things off! The real standout was the Salmon Encrustado... perfectly cooked, juicy, and paired with beet purée and hibiscus reduction that actually brought the whole dish together. Would 100% order again. The Cochinita Pibil had a beautiful presentation, but flavor-wise, it just didn't stand out. Not bad, just not memorable. I appreciated how accommodating the kitchen was with my food allergies on the Cazuela de Repollitos y Hongos. The flavors were great - especially the pomegranate and chimichurri! the dish was a little too oily for my taste but tasty nonetheless-the-less. Had girls dinner here tonight. We were seated in the back '"patio" which had space heaters for this chilly June day. The staff were wonderful and kind! We had Alexa as our server and she made sure we had what we needed. I had the salmon encrustado and wow. I love Mexican food but let me say, this was one of the best non "typical" Mexican food I've ever had. Hibiscus reduction!? Beet puree!? Corn on salmon!? Fantastic! We ordered the guacamole, which was refreshing and pretty! I loved the pomegranate seeds and fruit on top. We each order the three taco dinner, my favorite tacos were the Tampiqueno (hangar steak) and the Pastorcito (guajillo glazed pork belly). They were flavorful, well-balanced, and the meat was very good quality and tasted great. I love how everything was seasoned. We keep going back to La Dama when we want an elevated yet authentic Mexican cuisine. Las night was a delight in repeat. They have added branzino to the menu and I licked my plate clean. They ran out of a new cocktail, recent added to the bar menu and I was lucky to snag the last night, and wow was it a delight. My hubby had the taco trio and it was gone within minutes. I've driven by La Dama several times and finally had a chance to stop in and try their food. I'm not sure what I pictured for the interior, but it was definitely cozy and laid out well to maximize their limited space (plus a few seats at the bar - where I sat). I didn't realize going in that the menu would be at a higher price point. I was skeptical about $8 tacos and as much as I wanted to mentally reprice them - once I ate a taco, I switched my mind, these are appropriately priced. I got 3 Pancita tacos (guajillo rubbed roasted pork belly...) and I still think about how impressed I was with these. In addition, I ordered Chillitos Rellenos (egg battered stuffed jalapenos with duck carnitas...) as an appetizer and after the first two plates, it wasn't hard to entice me to try dessert. We ordered the carne asada and the chicken in mole, and both were absolutely amazing. The carne asada was perfectly cooked and full of flavor, and the mole sauce on the chicken was rich, complex, and honestly one of the best I've had. The real surprise though was the pork belly esquite appetizer -- wow. Smoky, savory, and perfectly balanced. It's one of those dishes you keep thinking about after you leave. My first encounter with La Dama was at an event. They had a great veggie dish in a parking lot full of meat dishes. Based on that my mom and I decided to visit the restaurant recently. We did not have a reservation, but we lucked into seats at the bar. We'll know to book ahead moving forward, because this is a small restaurant. The space is dark and moody, with fun art. There's a second small dining area in the back. We started with the queso - their version includes burrata and crab. Who can resist that? It was excellent, although like so many places, there were just a few pieces of toasted bread served with it. My dish was an appetizer, as was my mom's, but they were more than adequate sized to eat as a meal. Both were very good and reasonably priced. Mine seemed a little salty and I am a person who likes a lot of salt. A to-go order we brought home of pork was also much appreciated by the eater. Our cocktails were good as well. First time diner with La Dama, my husband chose it as our celebration meal for our first anniversary with our families (9 people in total)! First and foremost, La Dama needs to fix their website... ladamamke.com is hackkked which is not a great start. I wasn't even able to review the menu at home to tell you exactly what we got so bear with me! My mother made the reservation and was a tad disappointed the staff didn't mention we would be seated outside on the patio as it was a chilly evening. We ordered margaritas at the bar before sitting down and I was a big fan of the skull glasses. We were sat at our table and shortly after greeted by our server, who explained the specials. Our group reviewed the menu and opted to start with the guacamole and some queso. The guacamole was the fanciest I've ever had, who would have though of putting pomegranate seeds in avocado... but it worked! The majority of the table opted to do the taco trio, I got the Tuna, Tampiqueno and a chicken taco which I cannot for the life of me remember (and I cannot find the menu online lol!). All were good, my favorite was probably the Tuna but nothing out of this world. My MIL got the carne asada plate which she said was excellent. I will say that our server started off hot and then slowly disappeared as the evening went on, I think our table would have purchased more drinks if he would have checked in more frequently. My mother made the point that with the group of our size, he was guaranteed 20% gratuity and it showed... Sad to see but it was felt by the entire group. Overall, not the greatest tacos in the world, not the best service in town, and not an ambiance that I neeeed to experience again. I'll probably stick to the many authentic and delicious mexican restaurants in the greater Milwaukee area. My thought is that La Dama is probably a much better dining experience if you're a couple having dinner or a double date, but not so great for a large group. I've heard about this restaurant for a long time and got the pleasure of visiting here for the first time with a great group of girlfriends. The menu is quaint and purposeful and also has a hint of seasonal selections. I specifically went there for the chili relleno and boy... It did not disappoint! It's just the perfect, unique really special version of that dish that I'd never tried before. It didn't have any of the eggy breaded batter that is so characteristic of a chili relleno and made me love the dish even more. Simply roasted, a stick of Oaxaca cheese, and this gently prepared tomato-based sauce that is topped off with some perfectly seasoned black beans. Chicken makes it the perfect filling. My only regret was that I only ordered one. I've got to visit there twice again since my initial visit and each time I'm blown away by how much I love that little bite of magic. Please visit! And when you do, get the classic margarita, enjoy the chips, and save a relleno for me. read more

We were seated indoors, right next to the host/ess stand which is in the middle of the dining area. We felt a bit cramped with so many people coming to check in, & it got to be a bit loud & hard to hear each other. All things aside, the food & service made up for it all! We started with the guacamole & aguachile rojo-very fresh start to our meal! For our entree, I chose the lamb shank birria-FAB-U-LOUS! First, I'd recommend making reservations prior to your visit, this is a small restaurant with only street parking availability. The menu is extremely small, but well rounded which allows the chef to perfect his dishes. We started with the queso fundido and the pork belly esquite which was AMAZING! As an entree, we had an array of tacos and callo de hacha. The best tasting tacos were the cochinita pibil and duck carnitas. The only underwhelming dish was the camarón al mantequilla and the charro beans were okay. They were unfortunately out of rice during my visit. The restaurant is small house with the kitchen in the main dining room neighboring the bar. As a California native, this is not something I see often. It was unique and gave a warm ambiance. Love coming to La Dama! For my meal I got the steak and vegetables. The steak was cooked well and stayed juicy and tender. I do wish it came with something on the side for the price though. I got the vegetables o. The side and they were great! Multiple types of vegetables including Brussels sprouts, which I love - plus pomegranate which added nice texture and flavor. We got three out of their four desserts. It wasn't the best tres leches I've had, but just ok. The apple dessert was better. It's a mixed bag for me for La Dama. I been wanting to try this place due to the great reviews. And because Milwaukee doesn't really have an upscale Mexican restaurant experience. First and foremost, the establishment is very inviting. It's dimly lit so it's perfect for date night. The decor is fitting to the name, it's a mix of swanky and hip. Our server was superb. Very attentive, nice and funny. I appreciate the welcoming we received. Now on the food. I was looking forward to trying different things off their menu and some of the were sub par. We ordered the ceviche,m and bone marrow for appetizers. Ceviche was good but it was a bit on the unseasoned side. Bone marrow was delicious but it was too small I wish I would have been give an option for appetizers enough for 4 people to share. Moving onto entrees, we had the carne en su jugo, Cochinita pibil, birria and the rainbow trout with green and red adobo. Carne en su jugo was not what we expected. It looked like a parillada, literally no juice. Cochinita pibil had a strong pork flavor. The rainbow trout en adobo was disappointing because it was literally the fish butterflied and the sauce on top only. Don't get me wrong, the sauce had a good flavor, but it would have been better if the whole fish was covered in the sauces. And lastly, the birria. It was literally just juice, not a lot of hominy and it had a leg in it. It would have been better if it had more hominy, a thicker base and shredded meat. Also the broth needed more salt. The presentation for both the birria and the rainbow trout was not it. I was kind of embarrassed because I had my 2 aunts visiting from Mexico and I wanted them to have a nice, somewhat upscale meal they did not experience that. I came in thinking it would be an elevated regional Mexican restaurant experience and it just wasn't the case. The saving grace was the ambiance and the service. I feel that if I spent over $200 I should I have left satisfied and I did not. Maybe I should give them a second try and try something different from the menu. read more

Chef Peggy Magister closed the renowned Crazy Water restaurant and launched this concept of elevated Mexican cuisine, along with her long-time chef of Mexican heritage. I visited with a friend for the first time last week, and I can tell you this place is every bit as special and delicious as Crazy Water was! My friend and I shared the Grilled Oysters, Chicken Tinga Empanadas, BBQ Pork Back Rib Tlayuda, Tostada de Pulpo (octopus), and 2 orders of tacos. There are 3 tacos per order, and you can mix n match from the list of options. The lamb birria taco is available Tuesdays only. We ordered the Lamb Birria, Pancita (with pork belly), Duck Carnitas, Huitlacoche y Hongo (corn fungus recently popular in Mexican cuisine with wild mushrooms), Ahi Tuna, and Cochinita Pibil (pork shoulder). Every bite was amazing, but I think the BBQ Pork Back Rib Tlayuda was my favorite dish on this night! I loved the patio seating! This was our first time at La Dama after walking past it a few weeks before and making a note to try it. I would definitely classify it as more of a date spot. I probably would not recommend coming here if you're a picky eater. Otherwise, there are tons of interesting choices! I ordered the empanadas, but unfortunately they didn't have them. I tried the mole with tortillas, but I probably would've preferred it with chicken or something else added. The guacamole was amazing and the margaritas were also extremely good. The location is great, right on S 2nd in Walkers Point and easily walkable to several other bars/restaurants for an after dinner cocktail or dessert. We had a 7:15 reservation and unfortunately our table wasn't ready until closer to 7:30. Once we were seated service was average-paced but very friendly. We ordered the burrata queso and guacamole for the table. The queso fell a little flat for me. Warming up the burrata had it lose some of its texture/appeal. Guacamole was quite good and flavorful! I did the brisket special for my dinner. It wasn't bad, but honestly reminded me of hotel banquet food. Several others in our group did tacos and had similar things to say, good! but not great. We got the La Dama Aguachile Rojo for app and assorted tacos for main. Tampiqueno (beef sirloin) and Cochinita Pibil (pork shoulder) were our favorites!! We also got Pancita (pork belly), Pescadito (seared grouper) were delicious too. Surprisingly the Duck Carnitas was our least favorite as it was a bit dry and bland. Nevertheless, I was very surprised how delicious the tacos were. Only two downside is that it's pretty pricey for what you get, $8/taco. Burned peppers in the salsa sitting all over the top of my steak, dry potatoes that were partially black from something but not from being burned.
