Mama! Ignore the table, a large group had just left, they cleaned it up a few minutes later.

Wow. This place really blew me away, and I am kicking myself for waiting several months to come try it, even with it being just a couple miles away from me. My lunch plate was so flavorful, served up fast (because most of these dishes slow cook for many hours and are just ready to go), and plentiful enough that I had a small lunch for the next day that I could pair with something else. First off, love that this is a family owned and run establishment. Mom is in the kitchen whipping up delicious food (It is her cocina, after all), and her adult kids are out front running the house and taking care of customers. There's even a grandson running around, with a small play area in the back. The restaurant is bright, open, and generally makes you happy to be there. Very clean in the restaurant and the bathroom, even though I arrived just after two large parties (which they quickly cleaned up). I ordered the baked ribs lunch platter, which came with white rice, delicious beans (which i mixed in with the rice), and a choice of salad or sweet plantains, which I opted for the latter. I also added on a cheese empanada, because... you gotta. Starting with the ribs, fall apart tender, deep flavor, the fat was rendered into that wonderful soft butter texture that just makes everything taste so amazing. The bones pulled right out, plenty of meat on them. Big scoop of white rice, on it's own, just plain. I recommend mixing some in with your beans, which are OUTSTANDING. That is clearly a family recipe that has been perfected, because usually, beans don't excite me. Sweet plantains were a wonderful complement to the savory. The empanada was much bigger than I expected, and a wonderful texture, balanced amount of cheese, with an excellent sauce to dip. The price was very fair for both the quality and taste of everything, and service was so friendly. There are lots of sandwiches for me to come back and try, but I felt compelled to go with a true Dominican flavor for my first time. This is a lovely restaurant. Go support these good people!

I saw this dish "Mangu" on a YouTube video and they said it was good. So I proceeded to find it in the area and it led me here. It's a hefty breakfast so I come hungry. The interior is beautiful! Service was good and everything was cooked to order. I enjoyed the meal but I will have to come back and try some lunch dishes. For the Mangu everything compliments each other well. The ham was salty pair nice with the eggs and the Mangu. So if you're in the area, stop by and give it a try

This was our third time at this place and it still never disappoints. We went on Saturday for late lunch and were seated immediately and our orders taken within minutes. I ordered the pork lunch plate and subbed the salad for Yuka. I was really craving Yuka which is what made me think to come here again. My husband got the steak mufungo. Everything is so delicious. The pork was very tender and moist with some crispy bits which I like. I like to mix the beans with the rice which is also delicious. The Yuka has the perfect crispiness. I ate my whole plate but really could have split it into two meals. I was so full after. The server was very friendly and helped me decide between the chicken and pork. As I said, the pork did not disappoint! Inside there is a big mural of mama and they had a tv with a slideshow of the North Carolina fall colors which was very relaxing.

Awesome eatery feels like back in time, like back in the Caribbean Islands!! Stopped in for the second time after driving 12 hours from Massachusetts. The atmosphere is laid back, homie, light music in the back ground. We had the mofongo with steak in sauce and topped with onions, side order of fried pork and skin- nice and crunchy, great taste. We also had the bowl of sancocho with white rice!! Brian was awesome describing menu- and very candied attitude to attention and plates to detail and presentation. Will definitely tell my friends about this gem spot in Jamestown, NC adjacent to Greensboro, NC within a few minutes from I85

Cuban sandwich and morir sonando

(4.5 stars) I was thrilled to see La Cocina de Mama open up right near my work. Having tried them for both lunch and breakfast, I can easily see myself becoming a regular here. Like any brand new restaurant, they are still ironing a few things out, but on food alone, they are off to a very strong start. La Cocina de Mama's offerings run the gamut from breakfasts (egg/fried cheese/salami paired with different sides) to sandwiches, empanadas, and mofongos (fried and mashed plantains) to beef/chicken/fish entrees and more. They offer several juices and coffees as well. So far, the food has been very good. I stopped by for lunch to go on my first visit and had a Cuban sandwich and a morir sonando (orange juice, milk, and ice). The Cuban was not the traditional Cubano, and if you come looking for pickles and mustard in a sandwich pressed on a plancha, you may be disappointed. Taken on its own terms, however, the sandwich was still quite tasty. The pork was tender, and the thicker bread held everything in nicely. It came with a side of thin, well-salted fries that were miles ahead of a frozen offering. The morrir sonando was creamy and refreshing. For my second visit, I dined in for breakfast and went with a mangu (the aforementioned breakfast ingredients with mashed plantains and pickled onions) and a passionfruit juice. Though I might request eggs scrambled rather than fried in the future, everything on that plate was delicious. The plantains were hearty without feeling heavy. The Dominican salami reminded me of Taylor ham, only better (sorry, fellow New Jersians). Juices seem to be a house specialty here as the passionfruit did not disappoint. The folks who run this place are friendly, and the pricing is quite reasonable given the quality and quantity of the food. That said, "good food takes time" definitely applies here, so you may be in for a bit of a wait. If dining in, you can at least take in some of the ambiance (interesting wall art and a pool table in a corner) while you do. All told, La Cocina de Mama is a welcome change of pace for not only the cuisine that it offers but also the care with which it is made.

Mofongo mixed meat plate.

My brother heard about this restaurant and have been wanting to try it since it opened. I was passing through the area today, so I thought I stopped by to give it a try. I ordered a mofongo mixed meat plate with a side of maduros for my brother and I to try. It was mother's day, so it was super busy. There are a lot of family dining in. Expect a bit of noise cause of big family groups in a small space. The roast pork shoulder is pretty good. If your a fan of maduros, you will like it if you don't like yours too ripe(sweet) or soft. This cute restaurant is family owned. I will be back to try more food on the menu.

This new restaurant off of gate city has great potential for the triad area. I must say the actual service was friendly and inviting from the whole staff. You can tell they put love into their kitchen. I was pleased with the food as well. Many menu items are available, and of course, it's authentic. Because items are made to order, expect a small wait for your food.

We came here for lunch. Portions are generous. I got the salmon plate with rice and beans. It came with a salad and tostones also. Everything was tasty except for the baked salmon. It was fishy. Staff was nice and decor is beautiful. I think I would opt for the shrimp or grilled salmon next time. Our food came out in about 35 mins. Most things seem to be made to order. My husband loved his sandwich. I want to come back to try the fresh juices.

Unfortunately the newness hasn't worn off since picking up a menu; 3 stars stands Don't get me wrong, the taste of the food is magnificent! The staff are super nice. The experience- not so great. Most places you go to dine in, you're given a menu. Once you've placed your order, your beverage arrives first. Here, if you're lucky, your beverage arrives after you've received your food. Why is that? Do they not want to bother with refills? This is very confusing to me. The waiter taking the order wrote everything down, yet when the first of three orders arrived he had to get one order again and tell me they were out of what I ordered. HEAD SCRATCHER! Why wouldn't the customer find out their request was not available at the time or ordering or at least once the order was placed behind the scenes. Once the 'new' main entree arrived, one side was wrong. (Remember - everything was written down) Someone else had to bring me the correct item. All of the above is why I say the newness has not worn off. I will only go here again when they are better experienced in running the business efficiently. I do know the food is WORTH THE WAIT.

Delicious authentic food. Relaxed ambiance…read more Good service. No complaints. Large portions, too!

"Delicious Honduran food just south of I-85 on Guess Rd in Durham"…read more Came here on a Saturday evening a little after 6pm-- this is the building that used to be "Pad Thai" a few years ago. There's parking out front, but not a ton, and a bit more along the side. Inside, there's a counter by the door with a register and mints (and probably where one would pickup takeout), but you wait to get seated. The place was bright with interesting Central American paintings and lively music. A few tables were taken but it was hardly what I'd call "busy". I ordered the Tajada con carne molida (fried plantains with ground beef) off the "Honduran menu". My dining partner had a creamy chicken mofongo. We also had Jarritos sodas-- I got the pineapple and she had the tamarind. One awkwardness was that the menu didn't have any prices, but I assumed (correctly) that nothing would be crazy expensive that we ordered (though weirdly the tamarind and pineapple Jarritos were different prices). Service was good-- although English was a second language, our server made do, accurately took our order, and was attentive. As other reviewers noted, this is not a speedy place-- I think it was at or maybe over 20 minutes to get our food, but that was fine. Both dishes were really good. The creamy sauce on the mofongo was to-die-for... so yummy. And I enjoyed my plantain/ beef dish-- my dining partner said it was somewhat analogous to "nachos" in a funny way, and she's not wrong. The plantains were pretty stiff-- almost like plantain chips, but still yummy, and the beef and accompaniments were excellent (see photo). The quantity was HUGE-- both of us had enough easily for a second meal. Price wasn't bad-- with the drinks and tax and tip, it was slightly over $50 total. Overall, I'm very happy we tried this place, and I have every intention of coming back.

I very much like certain Caribbean dishes - Jerk Chicken, Curried Goat or Chicken, Brown Stew…read moreChicken, Ackee & Salt Fish, Stewed Turkey Necks, and most of all, Oxtail! I have eaten at Da Ragge, La Palma, and Calypso Mama in Greensboro, Dixon's Jamaican in Burlington, and a few others. In this area, I've tried Outta D Kitchen, Ah Fiwi, & Taste Jamaica in WS. I finally got around to trying this spot a few times, which has been around for a while, the oldest Yelp review was over 16 years ago. They have received just over 2.5 reviews a year, but somehow are still here. I ordered the Oxtail, a favorite - called in the order, based on Yelp reviews this seemed the way to go. On another occasion I tried the Curry Goat. The Oxtail and Curry Goat were very good, tender and flavorful, and the serving size was reasonable. On one visit the cabbage was well seasoned, but rather bland on the other. The rice and peas were just ok, and the plantains lacked softness and sweetness. I almost certainly come again - I want to try the Jerk Chicken, Curry Chicken, the Pepper Steak, and for sure the Turkey Necks.

I've been craving Jamaican Oxtail for a while and finally got my fix today! I called in my order…read moreand was kindly greeted by a staff member on the other end of the phone. They took my order, asked my name, and told me when to expect my order to be ready. Yeh Mon's is located on lockland Ave. just off of Silas Creek Blvd. Its bright green and yellow store front confirms you're in the right place before you even read a word from the sign. I waited the exact amount of time they told me before going inside. I walked into a tight, but bright carry out area, which can only hold maybe 2 people at a time. If you do a walk-in to-go order, you should probably wait in your car after ordering. I was greeted and asked if I had a picked up order and was asked my name. The food was ready when I arrived, and I paid $25 for 1 oxtail plate. Considering how much oxtail are in the grocery store, this is a deal for not having to prepare them myself. The food was still piping hot when I arrived home 20 minutes away. They gave generous serving of oxtail (about 5-6 pieces). -The oxtail and its gravy were flavorful, and the meat was super tender and filling. The best I've had since Rhythms closed. -The cabbage was flavored well but was a little too salty. The rice and peas were bland. It didn't taste like they cooked it with coconut milk like I've had from other jamaican restaurants. Overall, the great customer service and excellent oxtail earned them 4 stars. I'll certainly put them in rotation for regular spots to visit.
