Haiti may not have made it to the futbol world finals but the energy sparked by Haiti's strong history - from independence to getting to compete globally is just another example of the resilience of their country and its proud people. Growing up eating Haitian food allowed my pallet to know good from bad. Haiti competing this year lead me to renew my exploration of local Haitian restaurants. I was able to learn of some new ones that participated in the fanfare downtown, and also learn about a few in the more suburban areas. I learned about La Citadelle Bakery from a Haitian influencer who is likely a fellow foodie. She spoke highly of La Citadelle Bakery and all the authentic, delicious meals that they make as well as baked goods. Everything looked appetizing and I had to add to La Citadelle to my list. Website allowed for viewing of the menu and on-line ordering. There were a few specials listed including the griot meal I ordered. I was able to select a pick up time and set with enough time to make a stop. Upon arrival my meal was boxed and bagged while I looked at the various items in the restaurant. Bakery items were displayed throughout on shelves and in cases. There were also pre-packaged items and beverages in the refrigerator. I added a package of fresh baked bread rolls and a jar of pikleaz to my order. My food was presented before bagging and included the gravy and a side of pikleaz. The food was prepared exactly as I had expected, and tasted scrumptious; each and every bite! The location is in close proximity to the downtown Lawrenceville area in the Crogan Center plaza. The plaza has ample parking for La Citadelle and its neighboring businesses. My next visit will be soon as they were many other items that caught my attention, as well as as being featured on the social media post. read more

We realized pretty quickly we should have ordered 6 dozen. Everyone in the family who came from Jersey / Ny and parts of Florida were raving about how amazing they tasted and for the first time they had a Haitian patty where the meat to pastry ratio was evenly matched . This is our go-to spot for Haitian food. My favorite entree is the griot and black rice. The portions are large and filling. I've tried the desserts, and they are also really good! Customers can eat inside or order to go. The restaurant is clean and neat. Decided to try this place on a whim after visiting a nearby park. The beef patty was wonderful - soft, flakey, and buttery. I'm taking a star off because I was told the price was cheaper if I paid cash which I didn't think twice about at the time but now seems strange. When I paid cash, they didn't have correct change. Wow i lived in Lawrenceville for two years and never saw this place before I only knew of the one off hurricane sholes but this is new to me i seen a friend post about it and I so happen to bf in the area and decided to give it a try and let's just say it was well worth it. Inside was small but interesting i love that they had a few ideal things for Haitian kitchen cuisine such as rice , beans, juice packets, soda , diri mushrooms , sports drinks etc . Very helpful if you wanted to grab a bite to eat and a few items such as listed before. So it's a bakery/restaurant which most Haitian restaurants are both . Anyways me and my boyfriend wanted Haitian food so i told him let's try it out since the other one takes so damn long but is 200% worth it the one off Hurricane sholes but let's not get off topic lol . . . Back story: This Family Owned Business started in Sept 2010 (same location) only as a bakery. 3 doors down was a Haitian Restaurant. Well it closed but ppl were still coming into the plaza looking for Haitian food so the family decided incorporate their Menu to both Haitian & Bakery! I ordered myself the Goat, along came with Green Plantain, Veggies and The Black Rice!! OMG haven't had it since I lived in South FL. This is the most authentic Haitian Food I've had ! They had all of my faves: kasav okap (cassava bread), Haitian bread, jus de grenadia (passion fruit). I bought all of the above plus patties - chicken, morue, and beef. Truth be told, I came to the area for Donut Worry, a local donut shop in the same strip as La Citadelle Bakery, but when I saw the long line almost coming out of the door of La Citadelle, I needed to check it out! I'd never been to or heard of a Haitian Bakery, but this little shop kept churning out breads, pastries and sweets as I stood in line, so they're all cooked fresh. In addition to the bakeries side, they do sell meals of all types. I ordered their special, along with a the following pastries: Chicken Daily special - $5.99 Beef (Boeuf) Pate - $1.25 Chicken (Poulet) Pate - $1.25 Pineapple Upside down cake - $3.99 Starting with the pate, when these things are fresh, they're absolutely delicious. I had the Beef Pate, and the pastry was so flaky, buttery and had lots of really good flavor. The only problem, if you could call it that, is there wasn't a lot of beef or chicken filling in the pastry, and sometimes entire bites would just be pastry. I wasn't bothered by this because the pastries were so good. The Pineapple upside down cake (individual size) I was told was their signature dessert, and I could see why. The glaze on the cake was just right, especially paired with the tart pineapple slice on the bottom. The cake was moist, fresh and really well made. Probably my favorite thing I sampled here today. The Chicken daily special came with two chicken legs along with white rice and black bean soup. The black bean soup was listed as black beans, so if you want that bean texture and not the smoothness of the soup, be warned. That wasn't a problem for me since it was tasty. The chicken was covered in a sauce that contained chopped onion, green and red bell pepper. The chicken flavor was good, but I wasn't a big fan of the texture, which almost tasted like it was boiled. For 6 bucks though, this special was a great deal. Their specials typically are on the weekends and are noted on their menu board. Parking is shared in this lot but since there are only a handful of restaurants, it's never full. Customer service was just fine, friendly, and greeted you with smiles. I gotta admit that it threw me off when there were children taking orders (and money) at the register The verdict here is I enjoyed myself at La Citadelle Bakery. I think the bakery portion of the restaurant scored the most points for me, but there are some great specials going on where you can get a lot of food for cheap. Kinda a drive for people who don't live in the Lawrenceville area, but if you can, check it out and show this small independent business some love. read more

Best Haitian food so far! It was a bit of a wait because she had to make some more Diri Djon Djon (black rice). I ordered 2 pate morue and one bees, two griots with rice and a legume. Ok. The food here is fire from the Patties or Paté to the Grio . Everything is good here. I really like the the spicy herring Paté. Moreover, the staff are pleasant, the place is clean, and well lit. It's more of a take out as there are few seats. The only thing I would say is that you would be wise to call ahead of time as the wait time can be 30 minutes long. My college experience was literally all about Haitian culture. I just freaking LOVE Haiti and the spirit of their people. This spot brought me back to when I visited Labadee and Cap Haitien!
