La Chaiteria is a hidden gem close to everything downtown. Stopping here after walking Tumamoc is the perfect morning. The Verde Life juice is a juice with just enough sweet and greens. I always order the huevos rancheros or the ropa vieja. The food here, similar to Tumerico, is fresh and delicious. There are a lot of vegan and gluten free options here. What a nice surprise this place is! I had the ropa vieja, and it was an amazing blend of flavors. Portions were pretty hearty as well. Atmosphere wasn't the best, but not too shabby. Absolutely amazing and can't recommend enough - my husband had a black cup of coffee that smelled amazing (he said he'd stop by just for a cup of coffee sometime) and I had the plate version of the breakfast burro with a side of corn tortillas that was absolutely amazing. While out of the way for us, we make a point to visit this Menlo Park restaurant regularly. As with its sister restaurant, Tumerico, the menu changes regularly. Unlike Tumerico, La Chaiteria offers meat-based dishes in addition to its vegan and vegetarian offerings. The staff is welcoming and always helpful if you have questions about anything on the menus. I usually order the Frida Kahlo tostadas or Cuban tacos and a turmeric lemonade. My partner usually gets the Al Pastor tacos or Ropa Vieja. We choose to get the vegan versions, and they are delicious. The tacos come with salad, rice, and beans. Believe me, you won't leave here hungry! Very sad to say that my partner and I were greeted with homophobia at La Chaiteria today. As we held hands looking at the menu a young man in the kitchen pointed at us and nudged another staff to look at us as they both laughed. My partner decided that we wouldn't be staying and as we left someone from the kitchen yelled "byeeeee." As a queer couple we have never felt discriminated against at either La Chaiteria or Tumerico but we felt extremely unwelcome today and so sadly, will not be back. I hope the owners are mindful about training staff or screening staff more appropriately moving forward so that their customers never have to feel like we felt today. read more

This place is good for the food they are representing. The vegan options are delicious but lack a bit of flavor you would get from it not being vegan. The prices are a bit high for fast casual service and the neighborhood it's in. The nopales were delicious, perfectly prepared and not slimy at all. It was served with a small salad, dollop of guacamole, rice and beans. The side dishes were all average. The beans really need lard or some more fat to be really good refried beans. The quesabirria came with the same sides but also a bowl of broth to dip it in. The flavor was very smoky. Almost a bit too overpowering. The Cuban tacos and tacos al pastor are my go-to menu items, but you can't go wrong here (except if you forget the salsa, because it's delicious!). We've driven past La Chaiteria so many times and just loved the outdoor ambiance. We finally made the stop one day and the food is outstanding. Half of the chalkboard menu up on the wall is vegan...the left side and the other side....the right side....isn't. LOL My eye was immediately drawn to the Cuban tacos but they were on the left side and I was a bit nervous about trying jackfruit carnitas in my tacos. I'm a lover of the pig, the pork, the carnitas and was not willing to try "fake" pork on this particular day so I went to the right side of the menu and ordered the chile relleno plate. When my food was brought to my table, it was gorgeous! Two perfectly cooked rellenos stuffed with cheese, battered and fried and covered in a wonderful sauce with crema squeezed over the top. This was served with very light, fluffy Spanish rice, black beans and a very refreshing salad. That salad dressing is everything though - super light, a little sweet. Perfection. Oh, and a small scoop of guacamole too! My guy had a carne asada burrito and he said the meat was flavorful and tender, not tough or gristly. He was pleased with his meal as well. Wasn't extremely busy inside or out but there were a lot of food pick ups. Very clean, fast service and gorgeous and flavorful food. Think next time, I'll be brave and go to the left. read more

My only complaint with this place is the parking lot and handicap access. I'm a little off balance, and the stones (gravel) slip under my cane. That being said, it was worth my safety to make it inside for a wonderful vegan meal. I had vegan chilaquiles and my hubby had a vegan burrito, both outstanding. We had been staying in our room A LOT due to weather, and ordering Postmates from Tumerico and a few other places, but it was nice to get out and have a good meal here. They obviously do a lot of takeout from this location - there are only a few widely-spaced tables inside. Good service. I made it in and out without killing myself. read more

OMGGG This was delicious! We were down the street at MSA Annex and while talking to a local she recommended this place and said it was walking distance. I didn't know what to except. First thing you see if this giant Corazón on the front door and when you walked the smell of the food just hits you right on the face. So many choices! I mean so many. As I went down the list I saw Chilaquiles, since I already had some during the week. I kinda was hesitant, but then made my mind up and decided to grab them. The hubs got their breakfast burrito. Quietly opening a few years ago on Congress near Downtown Tucson, La Chaiteria is chef Wendy Garcia's latest bundle of joy spawn from big sister, Tumerico. Newly minted at #68 on Yelp's "Top 100 Places to Eat in 2024, La Chaiteria more than holds its own in the food arena. Located in a space former owned by a convenience market, the vibrant and colorful La Chaiteria offers up some of the most amazing Latin-inspired dishes in the country. My friend and I decided to stop in for a late lunch and partake in all of the magic. A few steps outside the building, you are met with the most amazing aroma that will tickle your tastebuds. Upon entering, you will encounter the rotating daily chalkboard menu featured Latin-inspired dishes, chef Garcia's signature vegetarian and vegan options, as well as an expanded menu with Mole, Horchata, Lavender, Saffron, Chai, Tumeric, Mazapan, and more. After speaking with the extremely friendly staff member, she highly recommended I try the Barbacoa Plate with Potato and all the Powers (Rice, Beans, Salad, Pico and Guacamole). My friend went with the Fish Taco Plate plus all of the Powers. Plenty of fresh salsas as well as the highly-popular (and extremely delicious) Tumeric Lemonade. A few limited seats inside, but plenty of shaded outdoor seating and parking out front. Within a few minutes, our server dazzled us with the extremely colorful and mind-blowing presentation that fans of Tumerico will hold dear to their hearts. The flavors are outstanding. The Barbacoa was some of the best I have ever tasted: warm, flavorful, roasted and seasoned to perfection. All of the powers were so fresh and delicious. This is a must-eat-at restaurant for vegans and vegetarians, although they are not a fully vegan or vegetarian restaurant. When I called to ask for a plant-based option, they suggested one of of their burritos with "all powers" (which means that it come with a side of rice and beans and makes you feel very much like you're in the movie Nacho Libre). The burrito was ginormous and featured tofu, poblano peppers, and potatoes. The rice and beans were out of this world. They also sell their house made salsa and have a case full of drinks (I got an electrolyte drink from Mexico that was a thousand times better than Gatorade and tasted like pina colada). Inside you'll find high ceilings, well spaced tables, an open view into the kitchen, and colorful paintings. The people who work here were HUSTLING and always had a smile on their faces when interacting with customers. La Chaiteria is a real gem in every way. This was our sanctuary during quarantine in 2020. We lived in the neighborhood and would regularly walk over for take out. They always took the pandemic guidelines seriously and were so kind and welcoming when we would come in. We no longer live close by, but La Chaiteria hasn't lost its charm. I also had a Rainforest Smoothie ($9), which was just OK and kind of small for the price. The place is brightly decorated, with murals on both interior and exterior walls.
