Jackfruit tamale plate
Evie S.

My favorites at La Chaiteria and at sister restaurant Tumerico are the vegan jackfruit tamales and the cuban jackfruit or al pastor jackfruit burritos. Tumerico is closer to my house and is all vegetarian with more vegan options but I like coming to La Chaiteria if I am going to have beans as like the refried pinto beans here (Tumerico seems to alternate their refried beans on some days with black beans that are made pretty bland for me so when eating there I prefer to get the tamale and burritos a la carte without the rice and beans) . The jackfruit is prepared really well for Tumerico and La Chaiteria-- much better texture and flavor than many places. It seems like they dry it first which makes the texture great and the final product doesn't have the flavors of the green raw jackfruit juices left. The one thing I don't recommend here is the mole. I found it very sweet and not very complex. I like that they have outdoor seating in the front and back and the counter service here seems to be nice when I come. Fairly nice ambiance for a counter service spot too. Hours are a bit limited. Note that their crema is made with cashews. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! An Evie favorite!

Chile Relleno Plate

A huge fan of this place because each and every time you come here, you can expect consistent tastiness, freshly prepared meals, and good vibes overall. Everything I have ordered here... and I mean everything as I have been coming a few years... is superb in flavor ( personally, I am a huge fan of their chile relleno and their pork carnitas chilaquiles). This is also the only place I look forward to a side salad for breakfast ... They offer vegan and meat options. They also have a good mole latte and smoothie options. Their menu specials change but the quality of food does not. Due to renovations in the past year... lots more dining indoors and on the back patio allowing for larger groups. Parking is a bit of a challenge but worth the effort. They have a sister restaurant (Tumerico)... but this is my favorite. Service is super nice and quick.

Carnitas

Food was off the chain!!!! Perfectly savory and delicious carnitas. Sister to Tumerico so the beans, rice and salad were the same. Adding salt and lemon to the salad and rice made it substantially better. The beans cannot be saved tho. It needs more fat and love but I guess that's the sacrifice for being vegan. Corn tortillas were steamed but tasted raw. I think they should have been fried a little. Came with two friends who also enjoyed their food. I tried the Cuban pork (or chicken?) on my friends plate and it was good. I got a Coke with my meal and the total was around $19. Pretty pricey for a serving that is just enough to be satisfied but not full and zero leftovers.

Great chips and salsa

I had high expectations for this place, so I'll start with the not-so-great. Prices are on the higher side, though I assume they use quality ingredients. We ordered the carnitas (pork) burrito, which had good flavor, but the broccoli tasted off--both in the burrito and in the rice. The beef tamales also had good flavor but were on the dry side; it seemed like they were reheated on the grill rather than steamed, as they should be. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table, yet you're still expected to tip. The décor could also use some improvement. The good: They have great drinks--I ordered the matchata, and it was very tasty. There's a salsa bar and a water station, which is a nice touch. They also offer items for sale in their refrigerators, and the open-concept kitchen is appealing.

Great stop after Tumamoc Hill hike - plenty of vegan and non vegan options . Salsa bar and o door & outdoor seating . We chose sit in the back patio . Really enjoyed the fresh beet juice & vegan soyrizo con papas plate .

Carnitas with all salad, no rice or beans

I enjoyed the fish tacos with some friends on the patio for lunch today. They're cooked on the flattop, so no breading or deep frying involved. I thought the price was reasonable for the portion size-1 order is 3 tacos. I LOVE their salad. The back patio is hidden but is shaded for lunch. Service was great.

It's been a minute since my last visit to Chaiteria and it was good to go back! The menu has since incorporated some of the vegan menu items folks might be familiar with from Tumerico, in addition to some vegetarian dishes, they're delicious to Aquiles, Carnitas Barbacoa, etc. our group of five enjoyed an order of the Carnitas, the Barbacoa, the Frida Kahlo, vegan tostadas, birria tacos, and a bean and cheese burrito for our three-year-old daughter. Dining indoors was not ideal because the space was filled with smoke and chiles from the kitchen area, but to my surprise, they have a patio behind the building. The patio is unfortunately lacking ambience, but it was perfect for us as it was shaded and quiet. Everyone loved what their ordered. The food is just really simple and good with fresh ingredients. The front of house staff were all really welcoming and helpful.

Huitlacoche tacos and horchata latte

This is a staple restaurant in my household, and we come here often for a quick breakfast, or to meet up with family and friends. Recently I've been really enjoying the huitlacoche tacos, horchata latte, and the fresh-pressed juices. My wife enjoyed the fish tacos this time. Something for both vegetarians and meat eaters alike. Honestly you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The service is always fast and friendly, and they're happy to make recommendations.

I went here again a couple Saturdays ago while in the area. As much as I wanted to have the fish tacos again, I resisted and tried something else on the menu. This time I got the Cuban chicken plate, and was still elated with my experience! It was so flavorful and so nicely presented. The green sauce were both also pretty good.

The La Chaiteria is the sister restaurant of Tumerico, but unlike Tumerico, it also offers meat options. Like Tumerico, the food here is excellent. I'll admit I was reluctant to try Tumerico at first because in past experiences, paying for a vegan or vegetarian meal often left me feeling hungry. That hasn't been the case here the flavors are bold, creative, and filling, and La Chaiteria continues that same high standard while giving the option to add meat. Service was fast and friendly, though keep in mind it's counter service. The space also has a small market with drinks and other goodies that make it worth a browse while you wait.

Honestly everything from this place is absolutely delicious. Every time I go the food is fresh the drinks are cool and the service is great. The food always comes with a side of salad and rice & beans.... Just so good. Just a very lovely place and it's so cute, I love the murals they have and the bulletin board has a lot of local community information. A plus is having their own salsa bar that's fresh and tasty. I can't wait to come back again.

Barbacoa Plate

WOW! I met a friend here today. She recommended it as a must-try in Tucson. This cute restaurant is nestled in Menlo Park and offers the best food I have had in a very long time. They have a menu that offers something for everyone with a plethora of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered an iced horchata latte and the Barbacoa plate. Everything came out very quickly. The latte was tasty and not too sweet! The cashier also recommends the mesquite latte. The Barbacoa plate came with beans, rice, a salad and tortillas. Everything was EXCELLENT! The salad was fresh and bright and made for a more well-rounded meal compared to traditional Mexican dishes. The rice was good with some veggies incorporated as well. The Barbacoa was SO good -- the flavor was so so delicious and the meat was super tender! I was so happy with the entire meal and devoured all of it. I can't wait to go back to Tucson to try more of their items! What an amazing gem. All of the employees were kind and seemed to really care about my experience here. Will recommend again and again!

I tried both the chicken and beef tamales, and my husband's barbacoa plate - all amazing. Lots of prominently advertised vegan options too.

Honestly, I wish I could give Yaquesita a little more, maybe half a star more, because this place definitely has potential. Their flavors are good, but compared to similar restaurants the menu feels a bit overpriced. For a party of three we ended up paying around $100, which felt like a bit much for what we got. The restaurant itself is pretty small with only about 3-4 tables inside, but the patio is a decent size and has a cute vibe. It's actually a nice option on cooler days if you don't mind sitting outside. Some items were better than others. The wet-style burrito was delicious and definitely a highlight. The quesabirrias were good, however the birria felt more like fancier shredded beef. It was missing that rich, spicy, slightly acidic, earthy flavor that usually sets birria apart from barbacoa or traditional shredded beef dishes. The bowl was just okay and had lots of lettuce. It felt more like a salad with a bit of meat, rice, and beans. Honestly, Chipotle does bowls better, and that says a lot considering the price. The nachos were good, but I've had better. Seis Kitchen has amazing nachos to share. That said, it's definitely a place I'd come back to mainly out of convenience, not because one particular item on the menu won my heart. I really do hope they continue refining the menu because the flavors are there and this place could easily become a standout spot. Personally I just think at the total price of my ticket other restaurants should not even have room in my mind during my meal. If you're in the area and looking for a safe bet where everyone will probably find something they like, it's worth giving them a try.

I was raised in a very conservative food pallet home like many Americans so trying new items like cabeza tacos is a very foreign choice in cuisine. Let me just say I am on a new adventure of respecting restaurants that honor the entire animal by properly knowing how to prepare each and every inch into a world class experience. These cabeza tacos did not disappoint! It was extremely buttery and melted in your mouth! If you do one thing this year, you owe it to yourself to put this place on your 3rd spot routine. The ambiance is so beautiful in this space too! There are beautiful murals inspired by Mexican culture with luchadores wrestling and oversized monarch butterflies, this place is truly a different dimension!

Let's first go over what makes great Carne Asada. 1. Flavorful 2. Juicy 3. Good cut(minimal to no grisle, bone, not flat/thin cut and not diced into kibble) 4. Tender Juanito's had some flavor, but it was VERY dry and tough and had far too much grisle. I just didn't like it at all. I had to force my way through it it was so dry, I dislike dry meat. I want to try a different meat, maybe it'll gain a star there, but for the Carne Asada? Hard pass. The service wasn't great either.
