This is a good location but this spot has been having trouble getting staff so their hours were not very consistent. I believe they have sorted it out and are staying busy, thankfully. The staff is super friendly, and they have tons of options, including lots of vegan and vegetarian dishes. We learned their sister restaurant is Tumerico, a vegan spot in the Sam Hughes neighborhood. They've got Mexican grab‑and‑go drinks from the fridge, agua frescas, and cafés. One of my favorite parts is that they offer a free soup for everyone -- you can serve yourself while you wait for your food. It's fast‑casual with generous plates that are easy to split or take home. There's also a great self‑serve salsa bar with amazing crema. We ordered the chicken ranchero plate and the Sonoran barbacoa plate. Really not feeling it. Pretty expensive; a latte plus duck mole chilaquiles was over $30. The chilaquiles were overly sweet yet very bland, I didn't read the mole flavor outside of the sugary taste. I tried adding some salsas from the salsa bar, but they were too watery to help much. The side salad also had a very sweet glaze, a bad pairing that made the meal feel like a heavy dessert. Portion was large and the duck was freshly shredded off the bone. Eggs were perfectly cooked. They accidentally gave me a sweet horchata latte instead of a regular, but it was good. I have some standard favorites (chilaquiles, huitlacoche tacos) but they update the menu semi-regularly so there are always new things to try. This visit we split the chilaquiles with jackfruit and scrambled eggs. The portions are huge! We also ordered the horchata latte and the new Oaxacan chocolate drink. The hot chocolate was truly special: rich, sweet, and spicy in the best way. Came in with a group. The experience was night and day from previous visits. We had a group of 6 but it was not busy. I spoke highly of this place but the food was just okay. The carnitas wasn't cooked properly it was dry and did not have enough flavor. I also asked for extra meat and 5 servers came to ask if we got it when we didn't. It took 30 minutes after eating to finally get it. Also, why would you bring me double meat in a separate container and not on my plate? The carnitas wasn't shredded properly and it wasn't good. We have been wanting to try this place for a while, and we finally did today. All I have to say is oh my god, we have been SLEEPING on this place! We came in for breakfast/brunch on a Sunday, and parking and seating were plentiful! When we walked in, we were greeted warmly by Wendy and she asked our names, making us feel cared for in a true hospitality way. There are some beautiful murals inside the views of the mountains out the windows were gorgeous as well. The smells inside were mouthwatering. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with cheese, and my husband ordered the red chilaquiles. The food was so fresh, and everything was well seasoned without being overly salty or greasy. Brought the hubby here for Sunday breakfast, his first time, my second. I ordered the carne asada chilaquiles, eggs over medium, and he ordered carne asada and eggs also over medium. It was kind of funny cuz he was like 'oh you got nachos with your breakfast.' Bruh. Chilaquiles aren't something I order all the time and I usually only order them at a place in SoCal. These will probably be my Tucson go-to chilaquiles. The accompanying salad is a nice change from potatoes or bread and kind of lighten up the. meal. I also got the turmeric lemonade which I got hooked on at Turmerico. We sat in the front patio area as it wasn't blazing hot and it's mostly covered. Good for people or pigeon watching. Idk what it is about the food here but nothing is crazy greasy or salty or over spiced. Their guacamole is perfect. And the staff is friendly and nice. I adore Tumerico (sister restaurant) so I'm not remotely shocked at how much i liked this spot. The portions are huuuuge and the food is so flavorful!! Their salsas always tie everything together and bring the food from good to great. I do wish we'd gotten more than two tortillas for the ropa vieja (recently at Tumerico it came with four). And though the chilaquiles tasted amazing the chips were a bit greasy. The beef tamales also had good flavor but were on the dry side; it seemed like they were reheated on the grill rather than steamed, as they should be. You order at the counter and the food is brought to your table, yet you're still expected to tip. The décor could also use some improvement. A huge fan of this place because each and every time you come here, you can expect consistent tastiness, freshly prepared meals, and good vibes overall. Everything I have ordered here... and I mean everything as I have been coming a few years... is superb in flavor ( personally, I am a huge fan of their chile relleno and their pork carnitas chilaquiles). The menu has since incorporated some of the vegan menu items folks might be familiar with from Tumerico, in addition to some vegetarian dishes, they're delicious to Aquiles, Carnitas Barbacoa, etc. our group of five enjoyed an order of the Carnitas, the Barbacoa, the Frida Kahlo, vegan tostadas, birria tacos, and a bean and cheese burrito for our three-year-old daughter. Dining indoors was not ideal because the space was filled with smoke and chiles from the kitchen area, but to my surprise, they have a patio behind the building. The patio is unfortunately lacking ambience, but it was perfect for us as it was shaded and quiet. Everyone loved what their ordered. The food is just really simple and good with fresh ingredients. My favorites at La Chaiteria and at sister restaurant Tumerico are the vegan jackfruit tamales and the cuban jackfruit or al pastor jackfruit burritos. Tumerico is closer to my house and is all vegetarian with more vegan options but I like coming to La Chaiteria if I am going to have beans as like the refried pinto beans here (Tumerico seems to alternate their refried beans on some days with black beans that are made pretty bland for me so when eating there I prefer to get the tamale and burritos a la carte without the rice and beans) . The jackfruit is prepared really well for Tumerico and La Chaiteria-- much better texture and flavor than many places. It seems like they dry it first which makes the texture great and the final product doesn't have the flavors of the green raw jackfruit juices left. The one thing I don't recommend here is the mole. I found it very sweet and not very complex. I like that they have outdoor seating in the front and back and the counter service here seems to be nice when I come. Fairly nice ambiance for a counter service spot too. Hours are a bit limited. Note that their crema is made with cashews. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! I'll admit I was reluctant to try Tumerico at first because in past experiences, paying for a vegan or vegetarian meal often left me feeling hungry. That hasn't been the case here the flavors are bold, creative, and filling, and La Chaiteria continues that same high standard while giving the option to add meat. While I had previously tried Tumerico, I went here for the first time with a vegan friend. I chose the non vegan option and had their Bacanora Sea Bass. This was a good choice as the filet was tasty and prepared well (ala plancha). The bass plus the standard adders were filling to the point I even took home a small portion of the bass for the wife. WOW! I met a friend here today. She recommended it as a must-try in Tucson. This cute restaurant is nestled in Menlo Park and offers the best food I have had in a very long time. They have a menu that offers something for everyone with a plethora of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered an iced horchata latte and the Barbacoa plate. Everything came out very quickly. The latte was tasty and not too sweet! The cashier also recommends the mesquite latte. The Barbacoa plate came with beans, rice, a salad and tortillas. Everything was EXCELLENT! The salad was fresh and bright and made for a more well-rounded meal compared to traditional Mexican dishes. The rice was good with some veggies incorporated as well. The Barbacoa was SO good -- the flavor was so so delicious and the meat was super tender! I was so happy with the entire meal and devoured all of it. A staple in the Menlo Park neighborhood! This is the spot to come to after your Sunday walk up Tumamoc. La Chaiteria has an expansive menu with breakfast, vegan, and non-vegan entrees. I love the fresh juices, especially the green Verde life. My favorite dish and one that never gets old because of the flavors and portion, is the Ropa Vieja. Im not even vegan and I gravitate towards this every time. The jackfruit carnitas is perfect. The portions here are generous for every dish and I wouldn't expect to go home hungry. This is old school traditional, and I love it. I so appreciate stumbling upon a well loved restaurant driven by what appears to be a family concept. There is ample parking in the gravel lot, and there is indoor and outdoor seating. It feels like a tiny warehouse or an off the grid cafe, with a cozy feel about it. There are beuatiful paintings/murals and the space has a wide open, welcoming energetic feel to it. And it was nice to see people out on the patio with their pups. The menu is glorious! In addition to having fresh juices, aguas fescas and lattes, they have range of vegan and vegetarian options. The duck pozole sounds amazing, but I have yet to try it. The turmeric lemonade feels like it is giving you a burst of life! It has an amazing depth of flavor while still tasting light and refreshing. I highly recommend the chicken mole plate. It is served with yellow rice full of vegetables, including carrots and broccoli, a glorious spinach salad with zucchini and soft beans. The mole is more spice then chocolate forward. The food is beautifully plated and is always bursting with color (the sign of a diversified plate). All of the flavors meld very well together. Everything fits like a perfect marriage. I've been a longtime fan of Tumerico, and kept meaning to go check out the new place, but never quite got around to it until today. The recent awards hype put La Chaiteria back on top of my "To Try" list, and I'm thrilled I did. Some of the breakfast and lunch offerings will likely be familiar to folks who've dined at Tumerico before, but the Chaiteria menu is larger and features a wider variety of vegan, vegetarian, and meat dishes. I had a bit of choice paralysis for a moment, to be honest! My friend and I got the pastor tacos (jackfruit carnitas!) and the Oaxacan Chilaquiles. Both were, as expected, absolutely delicious. She and I fell completely silent when our food arrived because we were incapable of not focusing on the phenomenal food. The pastor tacos pack some heat, so the salad and rice are a much appreciated counter to the spice. The Oaxacan Chilaquiles were a new dish for me -- the sauce was a deeply rich mole instead of a red or green salsa, and I loved it. The location is great too!
