All right, so my Spanish does not get me very far.. but luckily I can just throw my lady in line and learn along the way. And learn I do. I have been trying a lot of Latin cuisine lately, trying to figure out what I do and do not like, and I have now visited this specific spot twice. Both times, I have obviously been a bit out of my element, but never left to feel uncomfortable. I try to ask a lot of questions, and pick based off of those answers. Some things are already prepared hot and you pick as you go down the line, and others are ordered and you wait for its steaming arrival at tu mesa (i.e. Mofongo). I'm not sure if it's just Latin nature to be a little lighter in flavor/seasonings, but I always find my tongue craving more of a savory aspect (let's be real, I'm talking Asian flavor). I think Chimi has a great variety for someone like me, and my friend tells me its pretty authentic. I'm not in love with this type of cuisine, but I do enjoy what I try for the most part. All of my friends from Reading are fans after all. I think it's a great option for anyone in my shoes, and I recommend going out of your comfort zone and giving it a try. read more

I was excited to find a Dominican place since I just moved here and wanted to find a place that reminded me of home. Coming in it reminded me of the small town I grew up in in NJ. Everyone greeted each other like family, there was no set menu on the wall, you should walk in knowing what you want. I ordered a beef chili and a plate of pernil with rice and maduros for my girlfriend and I. I knew the Chimi would take a little long since it's cooked to order but I think it took longer than usual. As time went on and other people kept getting their food brought to the table, I became very impatient. I think all in all I waited 15-20 for the Chimi. Once it came I was skeptical but ate it. They don't speak English here but to me that makes it more authentic. This Dominican cuisine is nothing like I'm used to and I have fallen in love with it. Right down the street from Reading Area Community College, I found this gem during the pandemic when I was looking around for some local restaurants to grab a quick lunch from. Their BBQ chicken and rice is a great combo, they don't skimp out either. I guarantee if you grab a meal from here you won't leave hungry. Is authentic Dominican food eat-in or take out. A good alternative to Chinese food. The food is good and portions are generous (I couldn't eat it all). I had Mofongo and Pork which was very tasty but one thing I would like to say to them is to go easy on the Sopita or Condiments they use on the pork. The Mofongo was very smooth, delicious and probably will order again. This is not a fast food place which is a good thing my order took about 20 mins. They never get my order right. Today I asked my husband to get me a small picadera, no longaniza, with yucca and fried batata, not the usual tostones, and of coarse they get it wrong and send me tostones UNDERCOOKED! They take long as heck to make your food and yet it's still undercooked like how does that happen. Last week I ordered a chimi and it was Salao (SALTY). They need to get it together, get new people or something. Take some type of course to teach them how to better treat their customers and cook authentic Dominican food. Best Dominican food in Reading! I can't seem to try any other place. Definitely recommend it !

While I was in Reading this evening to pick up a youth from the group home I work at, I was quite hungry, and the youth I had with me recommended that if I wanted Latin food, I should check out La Casa Del Chimi. Not wanting to wait particularly long, I decided to go through the cafeteria-style line. Luckily, the youth with me was bilingual and helped me order, since I don't know much Spanish at all, and it appears that only some of the staff know English. Don't get me wrong, this is not a problem at all; I'll just have to learn a words for different foods for the next time I go, if I happen to be by myself/not with a Spanish-speaking person. The woman who got my food spoke a little English and was very helpful, and when I would point to something I wanted she actually told me what it was called. A tip: none of the food is labeled behind the glass, so you can do what I did and just pick what looks good to you, or simply ask! The server really piled the food into my to-go box and really gave me the bang for my buck. I got a platter, and paid an extra dollar for plantains, which came out to $8. Also, be aware that there is no menu on the wall or at the counter (though I've seen pictures of menus on here, but I didn't see any person). I wouldn't even know where to begin if I had ordered something apart from the cafeteria line. I did see in another review, however, that they have pastelillos, which I will definitely order in the future. And now, to the food... the food was AMAZING. I went there for the first time and I was not impressed either! I ordered my sweet plantains and a pastelillo for my daughters and I waited for 45 minutes.... The lady gave the kitchen the order but they never got it in until the third time I asked where my order was. I asked for my money back for the sweet plantains and the pastelillos but they said no they're already made so I waited another 15 minutes and I finally got pissed and left without my pastelillos and sweet plantains. I love the authenticity of the food here. It's very important that you know Spanish because no one there knows English which can be a drag. It's not healthy but if you're craving Hispanic food it's a good place to go. The tres leche cake is awesome. The food here is seasoned so if you like more subtle flavors this place may not be for you. The food may be greasy depending on what you order so if you're health conscious this place isn't good for you either.
