Not what I expected after reading the reviews. I had high hopes for this place. The building itself is a little run-down and could use some TLC. Their menu is limited to a few sandwiches, a few choices of tacos, and some specials of the day. Maybe I'm not used to real authentic Mexican cuisine, but the chili rellenos dish was like a doughnut, stuffed with a mild pepper, which was stuffed with some sort of rubbery cheese. No bueno. Not impressive. Our server was nice, but we could have used some drink refills. Speaking of drinks, they do NOT serve alcohol. So don't go in here expecting a bountiful menu with assorted margarita options. I will give it a second chance, I suppose, I feel like I'm missing something here compared to everyone else's thoughts. I am a frequent visitor of this establishment, and every time I come here to eat, I leave happy. I only come here Wednesday, and Fridays, because those are the days that tacos are on sale for $1.25. They used to be $1 for a taco, but I guess they needed to capitalize on more sales. Wednesday, and Fridays are slammed, so be prepared to wait a bit. I have eaten many tacos from many establishments, and in my opinion the tacos served here are at best average, but what are you going to expect for $1.25 taco? The flavors here are good, and they seem to have a nice authentic variety on the menu. The service is friendly and they take cards. I can't see the soft tacos lasting too long with moist fillings but if you're going to eat here then I wouldn't worry. Stopped in today for $1 tacos. The ladies at the counter were super friendly. Ordered 1 al pastor, 1 bistek, 1 chorizo and papas and 1 adobada. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. The tacos were just ok. The tortillas were thick and hard, so I only ate one and pitched the second tortilla. The steak was on the dry side. The adobada was moist but didnt have the kick I was expecting. The al pastor was better next door at El Paraiso. Didn't particularly enjoy the chorizo y papas. Ummm. NO. Ordered the chicken quesadilla & was sadly disappointed. The chicken was very bland along with the rubbery cheese. The rice it came with also lacked flavor and was dry. Best tacos I've had in Richmond, VA! I'm from the Bay Area, California and have been spoiled with delicious Mexican Food and taco trucks! So I was very disappointed with a lot of the Mexican food I had in RVA when I first moved here. I'm so very glad that I found this place!!!! PROS: They have $1 tacos on Wednesday and Friday! Their steak, carnitas, and Al Pastor street tacos are very good and they even have Pazole! UPDATE! I just had their brisket tacos and it's pretty amazing. I think it's my new favorite! If you don't like tacos, their quesadilla is very good! The Michelada (I prefer it with Modelo) is a must get! And don't forget to close your meal with one of their Paletas (Mexican popsicle)! The popsicles are very rich and creamy. They also have a bunch of really sweet servers! Even the cook is friendly! As someone who lived in Los Angeles for nearly a decade I can tell you that this place is the unadulterated truth. While I agree with people's comments about the tacos, the true barometer for a Mexican restaurant isn't tacos-- it's how well they make dishes like Menudo, huevos rancheros, and the quality of ingredients like cotija cheese. Making good Mexican food, when done right, is about making the complex seem simple (the hallmark of true genius, I might add). This used to be my favorite taco place in the city. I could have made a meal on the green sauce alone. New ownership of this place and it kept none of the recipes. The menu has been greatly reduced and the green sauce is now just your average canned green salsa. So sad. This place was my go to place.l, now it is bland and plain. read more

Tried this place after months of spotting it. The chips and salsa are delicious. You can tell the chips are homemade. They are thicker than your typical chips but that's what I loved about them! They serve $1 tacos on Wednesdays and Fridays so make sure you go on one of those days to take advantage of the deal! The slow cooked pork and steak tacos were my favorite! If you're after real mexican and want to avoid the texmex crowd check out this place. These folks make real tacos, not the tex mex/taco bell/americanized tacos you might be used to. If you've never had a real taco try one immediately! We have tried several items off their menu and enjoyed them all. They offer a wide variety of fillings for the tacos including two vegetarian options which I hear are quite tasty. Great value, great consistency, great flavors and friendly people, what else can you ask for? Plus where can you get tacos made with REAL MEAT for $1? Best tacqueria in the Richmond area. I drive here from 30 minutes away because I don't want to waste money on inferior tacos. had the al pastor, pig face and chicken- all were good- but all very similar. the stand out was definitely the fatty and tender pig face! contrary to what i've heard- there are actually very few vegetarian options. Service was very slow- but very helpful- and we didn't really know what to do- order up there and sit or be waited on. So we sat.. and waited and waited- and then when we tried to order- we were told to sit! but you still have to pay up front. it was also VERY hot in there- and it's not even summer yet. one positive was that the bathroom was very clean and well lit. It's a little out of my way- over near the amtrak station on staples but and it wasn't so phenomenal i'd make a special trip. read more

My first experience here i ordered spicy pork, al pastor, and bistek tacos all of which were pretty good i think the spicy pork was my favorite and overall most flavorful. My friend got some sort of chicken burrito which he unfortunately said did not have much flavor at all. The gucamole was was really good the thick cut pita type chips were different not necessarily bad, but different. About the only thing going for this place is the fact that it's cheap. It's also authentically Mexican, but not especially well done. The salsas and guacamole were good but not remarkable. The chips were overcooked, almost burnt. The tacos were okay, but a little dry. We came for $1 taco night and loved all the ones we tried: chicken, carnitas, steak, nopales, spicy pork, chorizo, and al pastor. My favorite was the carnitas. Soo delicious. My mother grew up in San Diego and I've lived there as well, so we are picky about our Mexican food. This was like an authentic street taco! The people were very friendly too.
