Food looks meh. Baked goods are wrapped in plastic wrap and looks like they've been in the display case for too long. They may be fresh but the appearance doesn't look appetizing. Location is good for downtown workers or if there are events in the square but otherwise there are some houseless people around. LRT station is close and the new line is half a block away. The prices are better than the second cup in the library so that's something I guess. read more

Terrible to find parking in this area but it is a great spot to enjoy while you are enjoying churchhill square events. Friendly staff. Lots of selection for baked goods/snacks. Nice atmosphere for a coffee shop. Tried the Affagato - coffee was lovely but not enough gelato. It melted soooo fast. read more

I didn't have much time to get the full ambiance of L'espresso, as I simply popped in to get a hot chocolate last night before heading back into the cold for the New Year's Eve countdown and fireworks at Churchill Square. Well, I wasn't the only one -- the line up was long, but at least it was much shorter than the one at Second Cup (I suspect those at Second Cup weren't aware of L'espresso across the street). It's a quaint and colorful Mediterannean cafe just off Churchill Square. There's a small fireplace on one side, with bright colored couches around it, and plenty of small tables throughout the rest of the space. A small flat-screen tv is perched near the ceiling by the windows. I can only vouch for the hot chocolate, but it was yummy -- not too sweet, and you can taste they made it with milk, it's not the watered down stuff. They also sell baked treats, soups and panini sandwiches, and gyros wraps. The hot drinks were most popular last night, as everyone wanted to stay warm. As a result, the wait was a bit long, but considering the queue, the staff worked pretty quickly to give the best service to all the customers. read more

I really hate when I have to update my review to a lower rating. Really really hate it. But I had bumped them up to 3 stars based on the efficiency of their catering service, and this morning that all fell apart. I had planned a meeting for 8:30 this morning, and ordered a fruit tray to be delivered at 8 am. At 8:10, the rest of the meeting room was set up ... but still no fruit. Weird... waited a couple more minutes and called them at 8:15 to find out what was going on. The man who answered the phone didn't ask me my name, location, or what the order was, first he said, it should be at your door any minute. Then immediately said "wait, she's back, you should have it already". I told him that I definitely did not have my order. Finally he asked me who I was and where the delivery was for. I then heard him talking to the girl who does the deliveries: Him: What floor did you just deliver it to. Her: 10. Him: What about 13? Her: I don't have an order for 13. *rustling papers* Him: It's right here. Dana, I'll do it right now, give me 5 minutes. No apology, no nothing. At 8:27 then fruit platter arrived. And it was literally a bunch of fruit tossed on a platter. It looked awful. When I explained to my boss why I was so late with breakfast for the group, she told me that this is the 3rd or 4th time that this has happened. read more

Came in during the Cariwest festival to find a refreshing drink and to get of of the heat for a bit. This location is prime, located in the Sir Winston Churchill area, between the Art Gallery of Alberta and Citadel Theatre. I was excited to find an icy fruit smoothie that was cherry flavored! Usually there's the typical strawberry, mango, peach and other berry flavors. I was excited to try the cherry. The large smoothie was pretty cheap at $4.95 - priced exactly as shown on the smoothie sign, no extra tax. The flavor was awesome! Not too sweet, bitter or sour. Not too many excessive bits of fruit. Honestly, it was just perfect! After a quick gander at the rest of the cafe's menu I saw the prices were all pretty reasonable, nothing really over $10. They have a debit/credit machine but it's also good to know that they have a ATM in the store as well, a DC Bank one. I'd definitely come here again. I stopped in to L'Espresso for a quick coffee and afternoon snack on a break from work. While the café is ideally located next to Churchill Square and offers a great deal of seating space and a pleasant atmosphere, my experience there was defined by mediocrity. While the majority of the reviews mention some of the hot foods available, I was only in the market for a quick snack so I opted for a latte and croissant. Upon biting into the crossaint, it was still slightly cold inside which suggests that maybe their baking isn't as fresh as they suggest. Upon returning the crossaint, I decided to check out their selections of muffins. They had a modest selection of muffins to choose from, however the employee at the till was unable to name what kind each of them was until confirming each one with another employee. I opted for a safe pick (poppy seed) which was perfectly average but hardly compelled me to make L'espresso a break-time destination of choice. Similarly, the latte I ordered was perfectly fine but didn't distinguish itself in quality from the nearby Three Bananas Café or even the Second Cup attached to the Stanley Milner Library. I cannot comment on the hot food they offer such as paninis, pizza, and wraps. They all looked appealing, however my experience with their wholly mediocre pastries may mean that I probably won't be compelled to try their other offerings. read more

L'Espresso is a great alternative to teh chain coffee shops in the area, and solid competition for Three Bananas just across the street in Churchill Square. There is a solid selection of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soups, and other light fare. The place has a Mediterranean theme to it, and it is conveniently located amongst the attractions of downtown. Worth checking out if you're in need of a caffeine fix, are thirsty, or want a quick bite to eat. read more

I got the Iced latte and it was not what I was expecting. They gave it to me in a slush form and it did not taste like coffee either. For a panini, I got the Tuscany, and it was not bad! Slowly but surely life is coming back to our downtown. Cafes are opening again and surviving in our city centre. L'espresso is one such place that provides an alternative to Second Cup down in Winston Churchill Square. It's in the old Tix on the Square location. The ceilings are tall and the wall-to-ceiling windows fill the cafe with natural light. Here you can get a tea or coffee, juice, vitamin water or, espresso - of course. They make sandwiches and paninis, which are all the rage in cafes these days. There are also lots of sweets for an after-lunch treat. I had a Portuguese donut which had my name on it as soon as we locked gazes. It was the last one, that plump little sugar-coated critter oozing a yellowy custard. I asked them to cut it in half so I could eat half now, half later, got a Tazo tea to go and within a block the first half of the sweet was gone. Less than five minutes later, as I waited for the LRT, I licked the sugar off my fingers and tossed the empty bag in the garbage. Ah, well. I tried. It will be hard to get the memory of that fresh sugary deep fried dough piece of heaven out of my head. D'oh. read more

Well situated right beside Churchill Square, this is a great place to grab a quick lunch or a coffee downtown. With a good selection of tasty paninis and pastries, L'espresso makes my favourite version of a London Fog (a deeply steeped Earl Grey tea latte). Sometimes the service can be a little slow, but it is always friendly and the food is worth the wait. read more

The girl was really rude to me when I asked for extra foam on my chai latte. She didn't put the foam on, and then sassed me about it when I politely asked for more. She didn't steam the milk properly, and they use a box mix for the "chai tea". Waste of money. read more
