I didn't have much time to get the full ambiance of L'espresso, as I simply popped in to get a hot chocolate last night before heading back into the cold for the New Year's Eve countdown and fireworks at Churchill Square. Well, I wasn't the only one -- the line up was long, but at least it was much shorter than the one at Second Cup (I suspect those at Second Cup weren't aware of L'espresso across the street). It's a quaint and colorful Mediterannean cafe just off Churchill Square. There's a small fireplace on one side, with bright colored couches around it, and plenty of small tables throughout the rest of the space. A small flat-screen tv is perched near the ceiling by the windows. I can only vouch for the hot chocolate, but it was yummy -- not too sweet, and you can taste they made it with milk, it's not the watered down stuff. They also sell baked treats, soups and panini sandwiches, and gyros wraps. The hot drinks were most popular last night, as everyone wanted to stay warm. As a result, the wait was a bit long, but considering the queue, the staff worked pretty quickly to give the best service to all the customers.

Came in during the Cariwest festival to find a refreshing drink and to get of of the heat for a bit. This location is prime, located in the Sir Winston Churchill area, between the Art Gallery of Alberta and Citadel Theatre. I was excited to find an icy fruit smoothie that was cherry flavored! Usually there's the typical strawberry, mango, peach and other berry flavors. I was excited to try the cherry. The large smoothie was pretty cheap at $4.95 - priced exactly as shown on the smoothie sign, no extra tax. The flavor was awesome! Not too sweet, bitter or sour. Not too many excessive bits of fruit. Honestly, it was just perfect! After a quick gander at the rest of the cafe's menu I saw the prices were all pretty reasonable, nothing really over $10. They have a debit/credit machine but it's also good to know that they have a ATM in the store as well, a DC Bank one. I'd definitely come here again. The smoothie alone won me over already!

Good service, very nice & polite. Super great selection of good quality teas. Had a gyro beef which was an awesome alternative to a donair. So good I went back & got the turkey sandwich, fresh & delicious. Best organic coffee I'v had in awhile too.

Custard-filled Portuguese sugar donuts to die for.

The coffee shop's location is on the second floor of the building (right next door to the restaurant Sugarbowl), and offers an awesome view of the North Saskatchewan river, downtown / Jasper Ave on one side, and the Garneau neighborhood on the other side. The place is filled with antique furniture, wooden floors, but also a touch of modern style as well. With the decor, the smell of coffee, along with the presence of coffee drinkers and enthusiasts, Kaffa is very inviting and a great place to drink coffee, eat and be with someone (or by oneself). Kaffa has its own coffee roasting machine on location - so I hope you can imagine the smell of coffee is very much present here at Kaffa!!! It's very nice. Kaffa, both a derivative and coffee region in Ethiopia, also sells their roasted coffee, and tea as well. Ethiopia, as well as a few Central American countries, provide beans for the roastery. Kaffa also offers art space for local artists, but music concerts as well. Anyone with questions or inquiries can contact Kaffa (their email address is on their website, kaffaroasterystudio.com).

The chicken kebab platter was a bit plain as the rice had very little flavor. Red tea was nice and hot and the service was good. We also had the deep-fried eggplant and a phyllo pastry filled with spinach and feta (similar to spanakopita) as appetizers. Both were delicious. I would recommend this place but the rice that had the seasoning was much more flavourful than the plain rice so I would keep that in mind.

It came with Koobideh (Two skewers of Juicy ground beef kabab) , Chicken kabab Joojeh (Sineh) and grilled tomatoes. Served with 4 servings of saffron rice. It is made for 3-4 but we enjoy leftovers. Food was amazing! The rice was so fluffy! Appreciated all the raw sliced onions and the grilled tomatoes (however I could have used less char on them). They gave us two dips to try with pita bread - Zeytoon Parvardeh Brined olives mixed with crushed walnuts and rich pomegranate molasses, and Mast - o - Moosir - Creamy yogurt blended with shallots and garnished with dried mint. Both were so amazing and full of flavour. Our platter also came with pickled...I want to say cabbage which was so delicious with the meat. The meat itself was well cooked and full of favour. I preferred the beef to the chicken but both were delicious. I really wanted to try the saffron ice cream, which was a great end of the meal paired with some tea. The ice cream itself wasn't so sweet which I really appreciated. Our server was lovely and friendly and super helpful. It looses a star because it was cold - both in esthetics and in temperature. I would love to see some more Persian décor to make dining more of a trip. We will be back again because there are many things on the menu that I would like to try.
