Turkey sandwich with side beet salad
Laura R.

Their sandwiches are divine! Home-made, melt in your mouth focaccia bread and delicious coffee await. The staff is very nice. I had the turkey sandwich with side beet salad. The meal was epic; portions are gigantic and the restaurant is busy for good reason.

I liked L'espresso Bar Mercurio! Located adjacent to the University of Toronto campus, this trendy and sleek coffee shop was an easy choice for me while staying nearby. I stopped here twice for drip coffees and croissants in the morning and was so impressed at how quickly the staff handled huge crowds. The impression I received was that this local business serves a high volume of people due to the university and adjacent hotels and conferences. I can't say enough great things about hard they were working. I tipped them both days. The drip coffee was strong and bold and my Mom exclaimed this was the best chocolate croissant she'd ever had. Amongst a sea of coffee chains, I really appreciated that they existed! It wasn't until my last day in Toronto that I discovered they had a beautiful, lush patio that would have been so dreamy to sit and relax on. It had lovely lush greenery and a charming feel. Make sure you find time to sit out there.

How do you start your vacation day downtown? Have an espresso martini at this bar which was delicious. Cool spot as you can either sit or stand up at bistro tables. We went on a snow storm and it was buzzing around with great people and tasty beverages.

Sandwiches and pastries. Only lunch options.

Cute cafe, but they have a bit of an identity crisis. When I went on a Saturday afternoon it wasn't too busy. I get the feeling it was built for a crowd, but I didn't see it. For lunch the only food they have is what's in the deli counter. There were about 6 types of sandwiches and pastries. A few of the sandwiches looked like they were drying out (egg salad and tuna salad). I had the roast beef. The bread tasted homemade. The sandwich itself was a bit dry. I also had the tiramisu which was great but $8. Many of their items were gluten free. I ordered an iced espresso beverage to dine in. All drinks are served in a generic paper cup and come in one size. The prices were some of highest I paid in Toronto. The staff was friendly. What I wish is that they used their full kitchen. Offer sandwiches and salads made to order. They have a beautiful kitchen that's under used. It would also be great if they offered different size beverages.

This is a casual place with plenty of seating - the big room with a full glass front and long counter and a side smaller quieter room with a few tables (probably can be used for private, small group functions). Came here at the recommendation of a local friend and described as being "trendy". It's also just a couple blocks on Bloor from our hotel - the Madison Manor - so very convenient. There's no table service, you order at the counter and food is brought to you when ready, drinks for self pick up at the counter. Limited menu, just a few items, would be better if they could offer some sort of meat or shrimp add-on for the ceasar salad. We had fish and chips, a hamburger special - both very food, the burger came with a tasty kale salad, making it a very healthy meal. The white meat fish was fried in a very crispy and light batter, fresh and tasty, with a generous amount of skinny fries and a slightly spicy sauce on the side. Our friend had the daily soup which is vegetable, quite a large bowl but a bit pricy at $9. Overall liked this place, which also offers an abundance of pastries and cookies - huge display case of everything - more American than European style, but good variety of breads and desserts - muffins, sliced pound cakes etc. Nice atmosphere. Very busy throughout lunchtime.

I love ginger beverages- it wasn't overpowering here, I mostly tasted the kiwi and sparkling lemonade. It was busy in there but we still got our orders and drinks quickly, I appreciate how fast the service was. My friend got one of their banana bread drinks - if you like the taste of hojicha, this was particularly strong which I personally enjoyed! Love how the store also has sections where it is like a little market selling local goods and always fun to see the dogs that are sitting outside. The prices are a little expensive (my refresher before tax was $7.5) but typical for what you'd pay in Toronto for a fun drink, from what I've seen.

I'd absolutely come here to get some work done if I was able to get a seat. One thing I really love is that they sell handmade goods from local artists and host craft nights, it feels very community driven and adds such a fun, unique touch to the café. Drinks I tried: Maple Goguma Latte - Slightly nutty, lightly sweet, and super comforting. I added a shot of espresso, which made it perfectly balanced and not too sweet. Dalgona Latte - A really fun drink with great texture. Just make sure to stir it well since the sweetness settles at the bottom. They're known for their creative, seasonal drink menu, and I'm already excited to come back to try what they release next season. Definitely a must-visit if you love cozy cafés, unique drinks, and supporting local artists.

To be honest, the store and decor are so much better than the original store. Maybe because there's usually more traffic in the PATH, so it takes more time for them to keep up? Anyways, the store was cozy and clean and I felt extra welcomed as soon as I stepped in. I got my usual flat white and of course it came with latte art :) They sell more beans and merchandise than the original store, so definitely check it out if you have a chance!

But $12 for a small drink that's mostly ice is a tough sell. Two drinks and a breakfast sandwich came to $36, which stung a little more when we sat down for a full lunch for two people right after for a similar amount. To put it in perspective: a venti matcha latte with milk alternatives at Starbucks run under $8. When did Starbucks become the budget option? The cafe itself is cute and the staff were genuinely friendly, which counts for something. But there weren't any proper tables to actually sit and enjoy your drinks, which felt like a bit of an oversight for a cafe experience. The drinks were fine. Mine had a sparkling milk in it, which was a fun and unique touch. But in terms of taste, nothing really wowed me or made me want to order it again. The breakfast sandwich was a letdown too. Honestly, a McMuffin would've been more satisfying. Cute spot with good energy, but the value just isn't there. Hard to justify coming back when so many other cafes in the city deliver more for less.

Some reviewers complained about the loudness, but, compared to many other downtown locations, Landwers was a medium level of noise, and we were able to converse. It was not excessively busy, but if you are set on eating here, then make a reservation. I finally tried the Sinia Kebab, and it was tremendously good! It was also huge, and I had to take half of it home with me. The focaccia bread is excellent, and serves as a sort of bowl for this deconstructed kebab. My husband had his usual Cobb Salad, which he thinks is particularly well done at Landwer's. Our other dining companion had schnitzel, which came with some angel hair pasta. He enjoyed it very much. Service is, as I said above, "relaxed". If you are planning to see a concert or show afterwards, then plan ample time to allow the relaxed service to unfold (a.k.a this is not fast food!!) We had a 6:00 reservation, and we were able to make our 7:30 concert time with about 10 minutes to spare. The University location is conveniently located near Thompson Hall, the subway, and Union Station (Via Rail and Go).

While it is a smaller shop, there is enough seating for 3 tables, and it's very cozy. Had to go for a flat white, given the Aussie homage here.
