L'Ecole is one of my favorite wineries in Walla Walla, Washington. Inside of an old French School House, This was the third winery in the area, established in 1983. They are a 100% sustainable winery, and also have the honor of being awarded the Wine and Spirits Magazine top 100 winery for 15 years in a row. Though they are known for their Bordeaux, my favorite here was the Semillon, Merlot and Syrah. *
An old french school converted into a wine tasting venue. Such a cute place. The wines offered during tasting ($20 per person) were all amazing . We had 2 white wines and 3 red wines offered along with their complimentary Ferguson wine. We loved all the pours and the servers were very knowledgeable and friendly. Even though it was very busy during the long weekend we did not feel rushed at all. They have ample indoor and outdoor seating and offer wine tastings at both locations. Please make reservations through their website in advance to make sure you have a spot. Highly recommend when in walla walla.
We had a great time at L'Ecole No 41. The French schoolhouse is a beautiful setting for a winery and it serves solid wines that is sure to please anyone. We booked a tour at L'Ecole No 41, which included tastings as you walk around the old school. For a Saturday we were in a small group of five, so we were able to chat with the employee who was showing us the tour and ask questions. The tour takes about two hours and starts in the main tasting room. All of the the wines were solid; and I have to say, I'm not a white wine fan at all but the chardonnay here was not sweet at all, which I really enjoyed. It's pretty hard for a white wine to impress me, but it did here. I ended up purchasing a bottle of it. You get about six tastings during the tour. The entire space is really lovely, with multiple rooms for tasting and private events. My favorite room was the old multi-purpose room that's on the lower level where the students played games and also ate their lunches. But you see a lot of the schoolhouse, including where the wine is made and stored in barrels and the old detention room! If you have the time I would recommend visiting L'Ecole while in wine country. It's a great tour where you learn some history about the area and the wines.
I was an invited guest at L'Ecole No 41 as part of the annual Wine Bloggers Conference and was hosted for a private tasting and dinner with the owners and winemaker. I realize my experience may differ from someone coming in "off the street," but my perspective of the winery's hospitality and the quality of their wines is very relevant. The winery gets its name from the French word for school, as the property is in an old schoolhouse. Located on the outskirts of downtown Walla Walla and its rows of tasting rooms, it's worth the trip. L'Ecole is a third generation family-owned, artisan winery that was founded in 1983 (the third winery established in the Walla Walla Valley). The winery focuses on environmentally-friendly vineyard practices too, which is something all wine lovers should applaud. Walla Walla is still an up-and-coming winemaking region, one that has a flavor profile I find difficult to compete with the big boy fruit of Napa Valley. However, there were a few single vineyard designate wines here that knocked my socks off! If you had done a blind tasting with a standard Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and one of L'Ecole's Ferguson Vineyard blends, I probably would've rated them both highly. Other standout wines were the Merlot ($24), Syrah ($25), and Chardonnay ($), all at reasonable price points for everyday drinking. These were among the very best wines I had all weekend in Walla Walla, and L'Ecole was by far my favorite winery I visited. The winery has a great little gift shop with all sorts of branded items and other useful wine lover goods like corkscrews, kitchen towels, wine totes, glassware and more. The tasting room is open every day from 10 am - 5 pm and no reservations are required unless you're in a large group. Tasting fees are a reasonable $10 per person and are waived with a wine purchase. L'Ecole gets a high recommendation for me if you're looking for a great winery to visit while in Walla Walla.
Steve and I were in Walla Walla for a weekend. Mostly we were on an excursion to try craft breweries in the area. However the Walla Walla area is best known for it's wineries so we made a point before concluding our trip to try at least one winery before heading home. This winery won out because we were very impressed with the Yelp average on starred reviews. Not that any of the wineries in the area scored badly... but this one came out as one that was the highest scored... if not the highest scored. And I can see why! The wine here is fantastic! We did a wine tasting and tried quite a variety of different wines which we highly enjoyed. The young lady that presented the tasting to us was awesome and we had a great conversation throughout the course of the tasting. In the end we were so impressed with the wine we bought a couple of bottles. Not only is the wine amazing but the location and the building the winery is in... which is in an old school house gives a great atmosphere and it's great to see the a building like this restored. I would love to come back here again... everything was perfect and top notch!
My friend and I came here for a quiet afternoon and it was amazing! My parents use to bring me and my brothers here when we were little to play out on the old playground equipment (not sure that they'd allow that anymore) while they drank wine. It was everything I remembered from my childhood PLUS delicious wine! The staff were so knowledgeable about what they were serving and super kind. The only thing to know before going is that they don't really have any food, at least on their normal afternoon menu, just a small charcuterie box. This was fine for us, but definitely make sure you eat before going if you're hoping for a meal.
Not sure what the hype is about but we just didn't love it. Yes, it's set at an old school house and they have swings and a vintage see saw. Wines were meh. They were slammed when we were there and forgot about us so that dampened the experience a bit. Good scenery and place to stop for a photo! Deck is gorgeous.
Old schoolhouse converted into tasting room. Very nicely decorated with lots of woodwork. The outside is also very nice. We had the 101 Tasting flight. We liked the Semillon and Chardonnay, their reds were very dry in the end and they all had lots of tannins. I think the reds would be great to store them for a few years longer to develop a rounder profile.
L'Ecole is always one of our first stops coming into walla walla! They are one of the original wineries in the area, and have beautiful, award winning wines. The old schoolhouse is spacious with plenty of room for tasting, as is the outdoor balcony which is pet friendly. They have beautiful grounds and you can bring a blanket for a picnic in the grass. Our kids love to play on the playground while we relax with our sips. Their next door neighbors Woodward Canyon are another fantastic founding winery of walla walla. They are two to not miss! read more

It was adorable. In an old (haunted) schoolhouse. What they did with it was great. It has books and chalkboards and school bells. The wine was tasty. Our server was great. Must see. read more

First winery stop on our trip to Walla Walla, for Barrel Tasting Weekend. Had a unique tasting experience where we tasted all the components of a red blend, 2018 Perigee! Specifically loved the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Malbec but was not impressed with the blend and barrel tasting of the blend (2018 and 2020 of the Perigee). If have time would visit both L'Ecole and Woodward (winery right next to it) but if only have time for one would go to Woodward Canyon Winery read more

Stopped by L'Ecole on our way to Seattle. I've known about L'Ecole Merlot for a couple decades as I used to sell it in my fine dining days. The wine was decent and bought 3 bottles of Semillon. Could have bought more or better but......... The guy working this Tuesday morning shift was one of the worst customer service wine guy I've ever met in my life. Grumpy to all be and an attitude to match. Even the other tasters stopped by our car when leaving to ask us why the guy was such a douche bag? read more

Love the feel of the former school house. It has been renovated but still has a nice vibe. The workers were attentive, friendly and knowledgable. The wines were tasty and were reasonably priced as well $16 to ~$50 per bottle. I would definitely recommend this tasting room to anyone visiting Walla Walla. read more

We spent a week in walla walla, this was the worst winery for quality and service. Such a disappointment for the region. Don't waste your time on this winery. Also the glassware was visibly dirty and they still served it! read more

My favorite winery in Washington! Every wine is fantastic, and the staff is quite knowledgable about the wines and the terroir. You can't beat the old schoolhouse setting, too, complete with grassy area out back with swings and see-saws. If you go nowhere else, go here. read more

This was one of my top 5 favorite wineries from my Walla Walla wine trip weekend. First, the tasting room is located in a schoolhouse that was built in 1915, and they have done a fantastic job renovating and maintaining the historical aspects of the space. As you walk in you walk up the stairs it's easy to imagine all the children over the years who used to do the same. In the wood, especially down by the bathrooms, you can still see some of the children's engravings along with the old coat hooks. I also loved how the school theme continues in the tasting room with the chalkboard tasting counter, they even provide chalk for you to utilize for tasting notes during your tasting session. Our server was incredibly informative, friendly, and didn't mind all my questions. I felt like my head was jammed full of wine knowledge when I left. He definitely made the experience very enjoyable. L'Ecole is family owned and since 1983 grows and makes all their wine and are certified sustainable, they are one of the largest producers of wines, and the maps of the growing areas in WA they have easily on hand are very interesting. The tasting was $5 for a tasting flight of 8 wines. Everything was good, but there were a few that I definitely fell in love with like the 2013 Chenin Blanc, the 2011 Estate Cab Franc, the 2011 Ferguson, the 2010 Apogee, 2011 Cab, and 2012 Chardonnay. The prices vary, but tend to be fairly reasonable for the quality of the wine. I loved it so much that I ordered a case to be shipped back home, the first time I have done that at a winery. read more

I have been drinking this wine for a lonnnnnnggggggg long time. I can't even remember how long, (and I promise I am not drunk..this time). L'Ecole has always been a really solid mid sized producer. Larger than a boutique but much smaller than a major vintner. The tasting room is beautiful. Inside a schoolhouse built in 1915 in what is known as "Frenchtown" due to the high number of French Candians who originally settled the area. Now normally I hear "French Canadian" and that would be enough to scare me away from anything. But hey, I will give those fake French a nod on this one. Good job guys! Nice schoolhouse and eventually a nice tasting room! Friendly staff happy to help you with the wines and places to eat in town. Well worth a stop and if you love good wine, they will never disappoint read more

A Walla Walla area native, I grew up with L'Ecole being one of the few early wineries. After coming back to visit after the big wine boom, and having visited many of the newer wineries, I believe L'Ecole has a charming uniqueness, found in it's location and wines. The feel of the place is so very Walla Walla, and so established - one of a kind. I would definitely say L'Ecole is the MUST visit winery when headed to the Walla Walla Valley Wine Country. At a recent family reunion, I took a large group there (on a summer weekend) and we were treated like family - Brandon, the tasting room manager was extremely attentive to our large group (and there is plenty of room for a large group without feeling crowded). I try to visit each time I'm in town, definitely a place I feel very comfortable and at home. The wines - My favorites are the very affordable "Walla Voila" Chenin Blanc & Columbia Valley Semillon & Estate Merlot... and the finer Perigee & Apogee. read more

As a non-drinker on a wine tour in the Walla Walla Valley, this was my favorite tasting room! The ambiance was cozy, yet classy, with plenty of things to keep one entertained while the rest of your group makes their way through the tasting. This building was once a schoolhouse, and when you walk through the doors are met by a classic stair case that leads you to an open room featuring books, art, and "swag". Those with me really loved the wine tasting, they had a hard time choosing which wines to buy...they ended up buying 6 different bottles each. The gentleman servicing my group (Christopher) was knowledge and friendly, even gave us a bunch of restaurant suggestions and the menu breakdown. We plan on going back for the barrel tasting the weekend of the 6th! read more
