    Arapahoe Acres Historic District

    Arapahoe Acres Historic District

Most Coloradans, or even Denverites, don't even realize what they have nestled in their area…read more Denver has so much to offer as far as historic places like the Molly Brown Mansion, but the less mainstream areas of Denver are just as, if not more, fascinating. Take a drive near DU and wind through the small, unique, but highly fascinating neighborhood of Arapahoe Acres and you'll understand exactly what you've been missing out on your whole life. Arapahoe Acres is a historic district that is a neighborhood built after World War II. There's no mistaking it when you find it as you're immediately directed by 50's ashtray-shaped wooden street signs opposed to the gaudy green signs your eyes are used to. As soon as you see the first house, you'll be in a time warp and a complete anomaly of Englewood architecture. Think 50's California Contemporary design (I'm no architect guru, but that's the best description). The designs are as unique as the lawn decor in front of the houses. Some houses are flat-roofed, high-windowed ranch style homes, while others have the feel of a home with a well-groomed Japanese garden set behind a wall you can't see from the street. The aforementioned lawn decor accents the style well. You might find quasi-flower sculptures or a fountain looking design made from metal. The insides of the houses are uniquely designed as well. Whether it's a fire orange kitchen floor or decor that all have forgotten post 1950's, no one will be disappointed by taking a walk or drive through this neighborhood. My only reservation with the neighborhood is that it is unfortunately surrounded by newer homes that take away from the uniqueness of the interior neighborhood. Go check out Arapahoe Acres and it immediately inspires the writer, photographer, or story-teller in you. If you check it out, and don't want to talk about it with friends after, I would be highly surprised. I promise if you check out Arapahoe Acres, you'll never think of South Denver the same.
