He gets to know every customer on a first name basis. I'd go back more to see him than to have a sandwich. Seriously, he's pretty awesome. The menu is simple and focused on sandwiches featuring their famous porchetta so we tried two recommendations from the peppy proprietor. While waiting, I got a miniature bottle of Chardonnay and my spouse sipped a Coke Zero. The Traiano Porchetta sandwich (12€ - 4 stars) is an original creation of the out-going owner with a mighty Mustard-flavored blend of Roast Pork, Sun-dried Tomatoes, and Grilled Eggplant. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. The prices aren't terribly competitive but it's probably one of the best priced regular supermarkets in the neighbourhood. The queues are long if you go at peak times, but mid-morning or mid- afternoon you can probably get through one of the three tills in a couple of minutes. I've never seen all three tills manned - they usually have just one or two active. There's a deli counter with cured meats and cheeses, but not a real butchers department. The fresh veg is not the greatest in terms of price or quality. Overall it serves its purpose and is usefully open until 9pm every night, which makes it a useful emergency stop.

As a study abroad student from America, the Giacomini brothers welcomed us with open arms for the 5 months we resided in Rome during the spring of 2008. Their panini are impeccable, they never hesitated to get us a cold bottle of wine from the back room, and they provided useful travel directions and suggestions for day trips to places such as Sperlonga. The days before we returned to America, the Giacomini brothers took photos with us and wished us well. I look forward to not only returning to Rome, but to returning to such a quaint and family establishment run by good-hearted Italians.
