This ended up being my favorite dinner of our entire trip to Tuscany. The staff was incredible and genuinely accommodating. I even called from the U.S. to make our reservation. I tried my best Italian, they met me with their English, and somehow we understood each other perfectly. This is clearly a place the locals adore, and it was evident the moment we walked in. I'm pretty sure we were the only tourists there, which made us love it even more. The menu was surprisingly available in English, though not everything made complete sense but that was part of the charm. Our server did a phenomenal job guiding us through the menu and offering thoughtful recommendations. The pasta dishes were exquisite. My husband decided to be adventurous and ordered a mushroom pasta (despite hating mushrooms) and ended up absolutely loving it. My ravioli with sage was unforgettable. I still think about it. I can't quite pinpoint what makes Ristorante L'Altana so special. It's a simple restaurant, nothing overly fancy, yet there was something about the food, the ambiance, and the beauty in its simplicity that made it stand out as the highlight of our trip. read more

Yelp never steers you wrong. We are traveling Italy and we were 10 minutes from Barga so we Yelped restaurants and this was a gem. Make reservations! We had our concierge make them for us and we were not disappointed. Try parking at the top of the hill and when you enter the town gates the restaurant is there on your left. My wife had the thinly sliced pork with ham and cheese and it was by far her favorite meal of the entire trip. The portions are perfect to allow for other courses and Gelato later. We eat small portions and often which allows to enjoy more varieties of food. I had the meat sauce pasta which was only okay. The beet salad was fantastic with 8 thick slices of beet root, olive oil salt and pepper. Nothing else needed as it was delicious. The house red wine was pleasant and not too robust. We highly recommend dining here as you enjoy Barga. We will come back another night before we leave to dine again. read more

Absolutely fantastic experience. Everything we had was delicious. Starter, homemade pasta, risotto and especially beef fillet with balsamic sauce, which was fabulous. What a perfect mixture of tastes!!! Crême brùle was also delicious and apple tart was extremely tasty. Visited again after being gone for 2 years. We have decided this is our favorite restaurant we have ever been too - ever. Food quality, freshness, preparation, and atmosphere is simply unbelievable. The combination has not been beat for these 2 traveling foodies - and we live in New York City - the land of restaurants! We all (had a cousin from Sicily with us this time) had pasta to start. All obviously homemade on premise. I had the macaroni w/truffles, Angela had the risotto, and Rosalia had the gnocchi - all ended up being shared and fought over. And being the females were Sicilian - I lost! I have to say that the gnocchi was the lightest ever. We then followed it with sliced steak, and the pork chop. All fantastic! The sauce on the pork chop made me through myself in the street - fantastic! The side...beats roots and leek sformato. Both simple and prepared to perfection. This is definitely one of the jewels in Toscana area! The food was excellent! We had the skirt steak and black truffle pasta! Then we had the homemade apple pie with custard and panna cota its with fresh berries sauce. It's too die for! Took a short cab ride to the old city walls from the Renaissance on a busy Saturday night. I suggest that you have the hotel call in for a reservation. Was promptly seated in the back room, past the kitchen where there were about 5 tables of various sizes. Loved the décor which included a large mural of the valley on one wall. I loved the menus written on parchment and rolled up like an cherished document. We decided on a full course dinner. The local Bazzone ham is something you're only going to find in Tuscany. Thinly sliced long slivers of meat filled the plate along with three pieces of toast covered in cheese and topped with truffles. We enjoyed the Risotto with Vegetables, it was creamy and finely chopped. Also, the beet salad was delicious. It had a slight vinegrette that enhanced the flavor. The main of strips of beef topped with herbs was cooked to perfection. The other main was a grilled pork chop with green peppercorn sauce. Where else would you find two main courses for 12 and 16 Euro? Finished it off with a Vanilla Gelato and Coffee. Excellent dining. read more

We reserved a place at 7:30pm since Saturday in Barga can get a little busy. But the parking was a challenge. The food is quite delicious, especially the bread with the nuts. House wine is tasty. The menu had 4-5 different choices for the 1st, 2nd, (3rd?) courses plus dessert. We got very stuffed by the end of the second course. Since we are a large group, we couldn't sit outside to enjoy the nice view of the castle. You can hardly go wrong with the food there... The service is quite good. read more

Truffle oil home made pasta best ever! I have to start by saying we are now ruined for pasta upon our return to the US! The home made pasta with truffle oil was simply spectacular. It was, hands down, the BEST pasta we have EVER had in our lives. My wife was the one who ordered it and luckily she shared about half of it with me. I had a carbonara dish that was amazing as well. As amazing as my carbonara was, it honestly didn't hold a candle to the truffle oil hand made pasta my wife ordered. I'm not sure we will ever forget this dish, it was THAT good. The pasta itself was hand rolled and cut into rectangles but once tossed with the truffle oil and funghi, it came to life! I just can't say enough about it. For secondi, I had a pork cutlet smothered in cheese and covered in ham and my wife had the T-bone steak. Both were great. Her T-bone steak was cooked a perfect medium rare and equivalent to what we would find in a high end steakhouse at home in the US. Service is what you would expect in Italy. It takes just a few extra minutes for the waiter to come by and get your order (standard in Italy) but once ordered, the drinks and courses come out in a reasonable amount of time. We are so happy we gave this place a try. We would definitely go back time and time again but with the caveat that EVERYONE orders the hand made pasta with truffle oil! read more

I eat at this restaurant every time I'm in this area of Italy and it never disappoints. Having spent much of my childhood coming to this area, this reminds me of the food my grandmother and aunts would make - wholesome, best ingredients - simple and delicious. This evening I enjoyed scallopina alla valdostana (thinly sliced pork with ham and fontina), fricandò (mixed vegetables) and roast potatoes in garlic and rosemary. Simple, perfect! I've traveled over 30K in Italy alone. Tried a lot of pasta along the way... THIS is the best pasta I had in Italy...and probably ever! The pasta with the truffle sauce is just amazing! Came back the next day to make sure it wasn't an anomaly. It's not... Note: As I mentioned I traveled extensively in Italy. I want to note the Barga is a very special place but it's not a warm place for tourists. Some people do make you feel welcome but all in all, it's not a welcoming town, imo. The wine flowed and was reasonably priced The food was superb, and the wait staff had no issues speaking English with us as we are Italian challenged. Best meal ever on my forays through Europe. The food was amazing, the bread was soft and scrumptious, the service was exquisite, and the ambiance is what we came to Italy for. The recommendations made by the staff were on par and I loved the raw dough (before being baked into bread) being tossed in the air as we were dining. First night staying at the Renaissance and drove the 15 minutes to Barga - well worth it. Walked in around 9pm and there were no tables. No problem the staff quickly set up for the two of us a table right in the front. We didn't mind because we were pretty hungry. Started off with a nice half liter of house white wine / really nice and dry just how I prefer. My wife had a salad and I started with the oriechetta pasta with sausage - one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had! For our main my wife ordered the meatloaf and I had the pork escalope with ham and cheese. Both really outstanding. But perhaps the most surprising dish was the side we ordered. A leak flan dish which tastes like the most amazing soufflé we both have ever had. Needless to say we were stuffed. The staff and overall service was friendly and just terrific. We have visited this wonderful establishment twice on our stay at Marriott's Ilciocco Resort. The food is excellent. Had the straccetti pasta with almonds and pistachio pesto, dried tomatoes and parmesan which was AMAZING. Also included the strips of beef with artichoke which was delicious! We had starters, 1st course, main course, side dishes and (of course) a homemade sweet. Our meal was a leisurely 2 hours. We recommend making a reservation as seating is limited. Personnel are warm and friendly! Community parking is limited but it is worth a walk!!! read more
