Ooh La La!…read more Fantastic place. Off the beaten path. Great wine selection. Tremendous service. Delicious food. English menu. Small but wonderful restaurant. Very much a local haunt as I think we were the only tourists. Every customer that came in greeted us with a "bonne soirée" when they walked in!! What a great memory.

Best Meal We Had In France…read more.. Pros: Excellent food. Charm to the highest degree. Cons: It's not the easiest place to find. Suggestion: Drive slowly and watch for a sign on a building on the east side of the "main" road about midway through town. Le Chambolle is behind that building. Star Ratings: - Overall: 5 - Food Quality: 5+ - Food Quantity: 5 - Dining Room Attractiveness: 5 - Menu: 5 - Service: 5 - Noise: 5 - Price: 5 - Value: 5+ - Restrooms: N/A It's amazing. On our first trip to France, my wife and I seemed to find at least a few excellent restaurants in the most unlikely places, such as the extremely old, but charming town of Chambolle-Musigny. Amidst medieval buildings which appear to lack indoor plumbing...much less a modern restaurant kitchen...stands Le Chambolle. We entered and were warmly greeted by Martine, the co-owner with her husband. Location: You can easily miss it. The restaurant, in Chambolle Musigny, is about 5 miles south of Gevrey Chambertin and around 1 mile west of D974...the main north-south connection through Burgundy. It's behind and to the left of an old building, one in a long line of similar structures. Either the navigator in your car gets a pair of eagle eyes...you drive by a couple of times (like we did) or you get lucky. It's best to watch for small street signs. Parking: Prepare to walk a bit. There's nothing near Le Chambolle, but we found 4 spaces together on the same side as the restaurant about 1 block north...and a surprisingly large lot accommodating 15 cars roughly 2 blocks south. Exterior: Understated yet handsome. Nothing fancy. Interior: Like dining in the owner's home. Quaint and very thoughtfully put together. Tables are well spaced, furnishings are simple yet elegant and classical music played softly in the background. Is there such a thing as "contemporary country French"? Menu: Fairly brief. They offer a 3 and 4 course prix fixe dinner with choice of 4 starters, 4 main dishes and/or a cheese plate and 8 desserts. Those same items, plus a few others, are available a la carte. Food: Heavenly. I had the 3 course dinner and chose scallops with some tossed greens in a vinaigrette dressing (the fish was unsurpassed), Sandre, a fish similar to perch or pike, with vegetables in a red wine sauce and 3 small scoops of the most flavorful vanilla, rum raisin and coffee ice cream to be found. My spouse had escargots ("prepared the way it should be"), coq au vin ("the best I've ever had") and 2 scoops of sorbet, cassis and strawberry. Wine List: Extensive, especially compared to the menu. We focused on red wines and saw a price range from 50 to more than 200 Euros with an average of 75-100. We were "lost" so Martine suggested a few dry reds between 50-75 Euros. We chose a 2009 Chambolle-Musigny ("Les Fremieres") for 62 Euros. It was great. Service: Caring. Martine was sweet, helpful and accommodating to 2 travelers who were way out of their comfort zone, not to mention their country. She was like your best relative serving her best food. Price: Cheap. Our meal was 118 Euros, including 62 for the wine. Value: Doesn't get any better. The combination of food, ambiance, service and price...plus an intangible feeling in the air...created a sense of magic. My wife and I could not recommend Le Chambolle any higher. For a little while, we felt like part of their family.
