Our contractor referred us to come here on Central Ave in Yonkers because of their reputation, quality and variety. Lights on Design was like a crisp breath of fresh air when we stopped in here. Main floor is mostly crystal grand chandeliers, attractive contemporary style lights, some 1960s-inspired and more. And, if you're on their website, you can shop by style, fixture type and browse through some of their inspiration gallery photos. Paula was a doll, showed us the upstairs filled with mostly pendant lighting, floor lamps and some smaller chandeliers. Since so much has changed in lighting trend, getting rid of our wrought iron dining area chandelier had to happen as well- especially since it has a country-chicish look I don't like anymore in my home. There's another lighting store on Central Avenue which we could've gone to- but based on reviews, so glad this place came out on top. Owner Glenn, was helpful, patient and friendly. Even when hubs and I didn't find what we wanted on their website, Paula helped locate it in their paper catalog. I loved how she gave us expert advice on how to choose fixtures and even determined which size was best for our space. She was our lighting whisperer.

When it comes to hooking up my home with different lamps and lighting, I never play by the rules…read more I'll mix every style under the sun and end up with something to give a particular spot life. I was drawn to a Moroccan candle lamp we bought ages ago in the East Village- then had hubs' friend hook up a wire and light bulb. Because that wasn't a legit electrical job, it gave out- but we saved the Moroccan Lamp anyway for looks. Powell has always been our first line of defense for all things Lamps and knew we'd get a brand new and rewired Moroccan lamp. Located a few doors down from Apple Farm and SAKS Off 5th, the husband and wife team here- have always delivered exceptional lamp service. Plus there's so much lighting eye candy. Powell's process is a bit off I think- but somehow it works and they do come through. I visited 2 weeks ago and explained my issue to Fran and asked how much wire I needed, length, on/off switch placement, etc. She fills out order receipt with basic name and # info. Powell Accessories will not give you prices on the spot and even though I asked, she just couldn't give me a ballpark estimate. Lamps stay with them while they access the situation. And between the time I dropped off my lamp and the time we got a quote was 2 weeks. Although I love my Moroccan lamp, my fear was without a price quote sooner- I didn't want to be slapped with a $500 bill afterwards! Goes to show you I'm not the lamp expert and all we paid was just $48!

Last I heard, a good business doesn't care if a customer reaches out via smoke signals if they have money to spend. Moving right along. My husband and I decide to skip the appointment and show up just to browse. Turns out, we found a few things to purchase but wanted to have our contractors take measurements. Kimberly, the only sales person who actually had an interest in making a sale was kind enough to print out the specs on the lighting. But only after another individual totally ignored us. Perhaps she was actually a statue. Measurements complete, we decided to call to buy the lighting. Upon calling, I was told to send an email and someone would call back. Seriously, how lazy are you that you can't take a payment over the phone. Please, someone, anyone, open up a high end lighting studio so I don't have to support this terrible business. The two stars I gave Patdo are for Kimberly who was polite and helpful and the wide variety of high end lighting they have.

We were told right away that we needed an appointment to go in even though this is not stated anywhere. After leaving, one of the employees used vulgar language and harassed us on the sidewalk. The owner shortly came after and threatened to call the cops. The owner said that we needed to leave because she owns the building. Then the owner said that she is going to have "actual people come in the store". One of the employees was videotaping us. After leaving the sidewalk the employee yells out " yeah you better f'ing leave". This whole experience was very traumatizing for our disabled students. In our program we teach our students to be more independent and be able to go into the community and feel included. However, this unfortunate situation did not make them feel included at all.

Having worked for 30+ years in the Huntington area I knew of the LONG time store for shades just West of the intersection of #25 & #110 and actually found something that 'worked' but it was a bit too 'modern' for the style of this antique lamp. He did have some very lovely old fashioned shades, w'fringe & embroidery that were very beautiful but a bit too 'much' for my taste! Thinking I wasn't going to find the 'tailored' but 'old fashioned' look I wanted I purchased the shade from the well stocked place @ the top of #110. Since I had looked for other 'lamp shade' places here on Yelp & phoned 'Tomlin' before leaving home, and the man had been so helpful on the phone & it was on the way home I figured I might as well stop there also. I am so glad I did! Perfect shade for my lamp, 'old' looking but not 'boudoir-ish'! I had been unable to find an antique brass satin finish chain & fittings for a found on the curb on trash day 'Tiffany like' chandelier that I had looked high & low to match @ the 'usual' places w'no luck. I mentioned it & low & behold a few trips to the back & he came up w'all the parts I needed! One of the nicest & accommodating store owners I have EVER met! THANK YOU Sir! In this day of 'mass produced', while seemingly ever increasingly cost & uncaring store owners, Tomlin Lighting is a REAL find & a ONE stop store for ALL your lighting needs! Only bad part of day was I had to drive back to Huntington & explain to the first 'shade' shop owner why I needed to return his shade!
