If you pull off the highway you'll find a small cluster of businesses including a bar and grill, a gas station, a Taco John's, and a Perkins. The oasis is a little run down, a little dingy, and hard to pull back out from to get back on the highway. We stopped to use the restroom and get a snack and while I was able to use the ladies' room, the men's room was inaccessible the entire time we were there. Someone had pushed a cleaning cart into the doorway to block it off, but the lights were off and no one came or went. We eventually bailed and went over the Perkins across the parking lot to take care of business. The Black River Crossing Oasis is about halfway between Madison and Minneapolis so it's a great location and sensible place to stop, but I may start seeking out an alternative after being consistently underwhelmed by the facilities.

I always spend way too much time in here trying to make up my mind what to buy. I had been following prices on gas, as I was traveling long distance. The price for 87 Octane…read moreunleaded was listed at $3.43 per gallon. I had already traveled 300 miles, and still had 215 to go. I always make it a point to check the price when I pull into a station. The sign said $3.43, so I proceeded in. When I went to fill up my tank, somehow I noticed the price had switched to $3.49, I looked up at the sign I had seen when I pulled in, and it had changed too. I had already scanned my credit card into the pump, and I needed the gas, so I filled up, as I was low. Also, though I had requested a receipt, one did not print. I went inside to talk to the clerk about refunding me the $0.06 cents per gallon, and told him my receipt didn't print. I had filled 16.539 gallons, so my amount of refund should be $0.99234 cents. I explained the situation to the clerk. He asked if I paid with a card, I said yes. He said the difference would be automatically credited to my credit card. I told him no, the pump said $3.49, and that is what I was charged, but the sign had originally said $3.43 when I pulled in but changed when I went to fuel. He then attempted to give me a discount card for becoming a member to get 5 cents per gallon off. I told him no... I didn't want to become a rewards member. I just wanted my $0.99 cents refunded. Next he rang $0.99 cents up on the register and told me that would be $1.00. I explained "no, I don't owe you... you owe me". Then the man talked to his coworker. They then explained that they could not refund me anything. Both men spoke in another language to each other, which sounded like Hindi to me, but I wasn't for sure. He asked me to speak into his phone to his boss, but then when I was speaking and looked at his phone, it was Google translate. He was clearly not understanding me, the customer. He did then call his boss, and I explained it to him. His boss also had a very heavy accent that sounded like Hindi. He said he could not refund my $0.99 cents, because he wasn't there, and his workers couldn't do it. I felt he was also misunderstanding me, and explained again how the sign had switched. The boss called me a liar and told me they didn't do anything wrong. I explained to him that changing the price is a form of bait and switch, which is against the law. I also told him that I have never been treated like this in any gas station in America in my life, and that if he was going to not refund me over a mere $0.99 cents that I would consider writing a bad review for how he was treating me. He said again that I was lying, and the conversation wasn't going anywhere. So I told him he would be seeing my review. It would not of been such a big deal, except for how I was treated. Having people working behind the counter who cannot effectively communicate in the languages common in American commerce, combined with being called a liar was by far the worst part of the whole unpleasant ordeal. I went to my car. I was looking at my phone to try to find Shell Corporate contact info. The original clerk came up with two printed receipts in hand, and showed me one that was mine, and one that was just previous to me on that pump, and told me the price was $3.49 on both. I explained again that the price on the SIGN was what has listed $3.43, and he said "no it didn't". I told him that was bull... that I know what I saw". He continued to say no. I left. He never did give me a receipt, even though he had it right in his hand. I travel by Black River Falls on the interstate frequently throughout the year. I will never go to this station again for gas. They will lose my business... not over $0.99 cents so much as the fact that they could not communicate with a customer who had an issue that I needed help with, and for the fact that the boss called me a liar. The Kwik Trip down the street can have my business. They are much nicer. Furthermore, I will tell anyone I know not to stop at this Shell station. I was flustered and angry for quite some time after driving away, which is not the safest way to drive, and I am not one who is quick to anger. I have absolutely no problems with diverse populations of people, and have worked (as a teacher) with numerous ethic diversities over the years (including Hindi speaking people). I want to reiterate that it has nothing to do with the color of their skin, or the language they spoke. The issue is that they could not communicate effectively to complete their job and that I was belittled and treated rudely by the boss. The place is otherwise clean, so I give it one star for that. If they had new staff, then maybe, but I would have to be coerced with sizable coupons or perhaps a complete tank fill after a staff change takes place to return. I have written to Shell Corporate on this one. Absolutely unacceptable to call your customers liars.
