Great food good atmosphere 9/10 the food here is amazing some of the best cool aid I ever had

We stopped in for a quick bite on a Thursday night. The place was empty, which was a surprise. We enjoyed having the staff all to our self but really hope they are more popular on the weekends. The staff was friendly and the art work inside was very nice! We sat at the window to enjoy the life on Livernois. We ordered the classic chicken and waffles, which arrived fresh and hot. I ordered a piece of fish and chicken which came with two sides. The sweet potatoes were very sweet and delicious. I loved the greens and corn bread the best. We also ordered a side of Mac and cheese, but it arrived cold so we really didn't enjoy it. This was my second time visiting Kuzzo's Chicken and Waffles, and once again -- they did not disappoint! The food was delicious, the portions were generous, and the service was on point. Our waitress was attentive and super accommodating -- even handled a special dietary request for a hamburger with no issue. Most of us stuck with the classic chicken and waffles, and I originally ordered the red velvet pancakes... but a mix-up brought me the Belgian waffle and chicken instead -- and honestly? It was perfect. No complaints here! The waffle was light and airy with just the right crunch, and the fried chicken? Hot, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. That seasoning was everything. I skipped the Kool-Aid this time since I remembered it being a bit too sweet for me on my first visit, but the food more than made up for it. I also ordered mimosas -- they were just okay (a little lukewarm), but not a dealbreaker. Overall, Kuzzo's keeps getting better and better. It honestly could have been a lot better. It was my first time revisiting since the update and remodeling. I went on a Tuesday late afternoon but it was highly disappointing for how slow the pace of the store was. Very, very nonchalant and laid-back attitude with high emphasis on nonchalant. The decor is more of an R&B vibe which is nice but doesn't negate the service. Order two items ACT BAD- a decent drink for the price but, bartender made a MAJOR service error- didn't verify my age/Identification for alcohol consumption(I'm 22 but I come off young) Fried Green Tomatoes- The appetizer itself was OK-ish but it had a kind of weird breading for the dish itself since it wasn't a cornmeal breading as I was expecting, but more of a chicken flower dredge breading also was excessively oily like they didn't allow it to drip off after frying. Key Notes * Took 15 min.+ to be seated * Was never offered water/served water before alcohol * There were only three parties inside of the restaurant at the time with one only the bartender serving, and one of those parties left due to slow service * unsafe, service of alcohol * unprofessional/Non-hospitable behavior behind the bar -the bartender was doing her make up in front of customers behind a bar * they didn't also did not have chicken wings and we're waiting for them to be picked up for an excessive amount of time - a chicken and waffle spot should have chicken and anticipate having enough for the workday at least. read more

Let me start with the positive. The food was exceptionally good. Chicken and Waffles (namesake of establishment) were nice, fresh, and hot. The negative. There was one table of three people living, otherwise I was the only person ordering dine-in. Customer service was poorest. It took way too long, the waiter brought out a grass of water and never asked again if I wanted a refill. Not very clean at the time. I'm from out of town. My best friend & I went & sat at the bar. Great food & customer service. The restaurant is clean & bright. The noise level is average. I prefer the bar side over the main dining area. This was my first time Detroit and we made a stop here for brunch. They do have indoor and outdoor seating, with covered options. The place has a good vibe and decent food, but the service was slow. The menu has a lot of good options and we wanted to try a little of everything but ended up selecting the big red (chicken and red velvet waffle), greens, and a bowl of shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits were a little bland. Only had 4 pieces of shrimp, greens were good with hot sauce, the waffle was a little soggy. We were also never checked on once food came and had to go inside to ask for our check after about 30 min from finishing eating. read more

Kuzzos has recently undergone a major restructuring and reopening in the past 6-8 months. That being said, not much progress has been made since the original closing. A fresh new coat of paint and some new artwork on the walls will not erase the memory of Detroiters who have suffered at the hands of the careless staff at Kuzzos. We went here, ordered and never received drinks or food. I'm pretty sure the staff just forgot about us. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else. read more

I love Kuzzos Chicken & Waffles. Everything about this place is amazing. I get the half & half iced tea & lemonade to start, he gets the 3 flavor Kool-Aid. The drinks are served in a quart Ball jar, they're extra large and last forever. :) It's always difficult for me to choose which dinner to get, but it is always along the lines of chicken & waffles. There are many different variations, and the chicken is so good. It's nice and juicy with a crispy, salty flavored crunchy outside- the perfect combination. The waffles are made to perfection. They're the thinner type, served with a huge dollop of whipped butter. I opt for the hand cut fries- the perfect accompaniment- along with a side of mac-n-cheese & cornbread muffin to finish it off. I always need to box up some food, the portions are large. I look forward to dining at Kuzzos. It's always a pleasure! read more

By all the reviews... you pretty much now know the legend of Kuzzos... the food can sometimes be great! The service can sometimes be okay as well... probably never exceptional... but come at the wrong time and you may be waiting a year before you get food. I felt like I should review because they are a metro Detroit staple for chicken n waffles. I have gone many times because it's conveniently close, but ALSO I had to admit to myself that no matter how many times I waited my whole life to get some food here.... I really like their chicken and waffles... whether it be the big red or the regular waffle and the tenders. I can't touch the sides or the kool-aid/sweet tea/lemonade... the sides are heart attack worthy, buttered up and sugared up. The drinks are like 80% sugar. And the alcoholic bevs are not what you would call top of the line, but the prices hit for around $13-$15 a drink. My advice? The closer you go there during non peak times, better chance of your service being decent. If it looks like there are a lot of people there, just wait to get your fix another day. For food... keep your order simple, get chicken n waffles, drink some water with it, or get a beer, or some wine.... No house drinks. If you do those things you should get decent food and service with a pretty good price... go outside of those parameters, you're playing with fire. Good Luck! read more

I had just arrived in the city and was craving a "soul food" brunch spot. I was sold when I saw chicken and waffles. I ordered the red velvet waffle with chicken tenders which was a solidly good choice. The waffle was perfectly cooked (not too hard or too soft) but was hoping for a stronger red velvet flavor. It was also missing the cream cheese glaze. The tenders were hot, a nice size, and well seasoned. To be honest, I feel my rating is based off of my item selection. I had no clue about how massive and eye catching the koolaids were! The waiter mentioned koolaid, I saw the price for $4 and said... um no thanks. We were the first party at the restaurant (weekday morning) so it wasn't until I was leaving and I saw people with them I knew I made a mistake. I also wasn't in the mood to drink yet, but would for sure try one spiked! Last wish is that I wish I would have grabbed one or 2 sides to try. When we got our food the chicken wasn't even cooked all the way seemed like they refried it in old grease , the potatoes were cold and tasted like they were microwaved.. Great evening. I visited your restaurant and really enjoyed the food and my dining experience. However i was disappointed. I ordered the grits with the fried lobster tail, shrimp and salmon. I was informed you all had no lobster tails; no problem but I would be given extra shrimp. To my surprise there was no adjustment in the price. I am a seafood lover and there is no way the extra shrimp cost the same as a lobster tail. No I don't want anything free but if that is your policy that is a great way for me to find another establishment to dine at. read more

Overall a great restaurant! The service was great, servers were attentive. We went on a Saturday at around 11:30am. I thought it was going to be very busy but we were seated right away (outside). They only have 2 shade covers, luckily we got one of those tables because the sun was out. Otherwise we probably would've had to wait to be seated indoors. Their drink selection was nice. They have a wide variety of juices and kool-aids which were pretty good. I had the papaya juice. The wait time for our food to come out was average, about 15 minutes. This place is definitely over rated. Best news is the waffle is good. However the Chicken wings look like Turkey Wings and battered with what taste like pancake batter. The volume of the music is so loud my guest and I could not hear each other talk. not to mention we were ask by three different people had we been waited on. Took over 40 minutes to get chicken and waffles I did complain to one of the three people but all she said was next time order the chicken tenders. First time trying Kuzzos and my review is really mixed. I'm a vlogger, at times and if it goes well the content is posted. I went on a Sunday to have breakfast at noon. I was seated at 12:05, it was packed so I was surprised they had a table. Got the menu and water right away. It took our waiter maybe 30 mins to come back, I know how it can be and he was working really hard and was nice. He was working the bar area as well as the tables, I never saw him be able to catch his breath. Once he came back we ordered, and waited and waited. It was now on the kitchen, I noticed a lot of drinks but barely food served. It kind of came out in waves. After an hour of no food most people would've left but I knew the food had to be good by the crowd so I was more patient than usual. Didn't get our food until 2 hours later, and was told one of the meals were burned so I had to order something else. I'm a foody so when you have something you want and you wait hours not to get it. First time I've wiped my hands on my pants. Only got the silverware napkin, my new order was shrimp and grits. I mostly used a fork but being extremely hungry I cracked the tail shell to get more meat so my fingers got saucy. I think I was charged for the new menu item instead of it being replaced because it was out of my control. Food is affordable so it's not really a big deal but would've been considerate with the time we waited. 3 hours later there was a whole new crowd. I got the bill at almost 4. So imagine getting there at noon and not leaving until almost 4 for breakfast foods. Breakfast is supposed to be a quick thing even served in massive quantities. Nothing on that menu should've taken over 30 mins to prepare let alone hours. It's hard because this is a very nice black owned business but the service wasn't good. We didn't have a bad waiter! So morso what happened in the kitchen because once we did get the food, it was good. THE TIME SITTING is causing me not to want to return. Sad because the food was good. I think to go is the same, well atleast that day. Overall, an amazing experience. We came here on a Sunday with a party of 4, and got there a little before open. We were quickly seated, and the pacing for the food was very nice. We got our drinks and items with enough time to allow socializing before the main course arrived. Overall, the food was surprisingly sweeter than expected. The tea was very sweet, and so were my grits. That being said, it wasn't a problem, just a bit of a surprise. Be sure to ask about their cocktails though if you're looking for one, they didn't readily advertise or provide a menu for those. It was also very odd to me that they didn't have any variety of coffee either. Their waffles are some of the best I've ever had. I'd definitely go back! The biggest surprise was the cost. It was not too crowded so we ordered our food...Arrived about 1245pm for a carry out that was supposed to take 10 to 15 min...it took literally over an hour to receive our food! We watched ppl that arrived after us...they came and went...No one cared at first. Manager finally noticed and took great care of us after an hour of waiting. The owner was aware and did not say one word to us or acknowledge us. I ordered $50 worth of food...this won't happen again because I will not patronize this business again. I was so disappointed. For an owner to just look over us like that, was very unprofessional and bad for business. The food and customer service here has changed. I placed an order through doordash pickup. I guess they assumed that it would be a dasher coming to pick up the order. They gave me these small tenders and two were dry and it looked like it was cooked in old grease. I made sure to check my food while inside. I stood at the bar waiting on someone to come over. The lady who brought my food was the only one that came to ask what was wrong. My food was remade but the old chicken shouldn't have been given to me in the first place. Tried to give this spot another try. Hate I did that. I ordered a waffle bacon, and a hot link . There was no one else there but a family who was in the middle of their meal. My wife and sister ordered and received their food. They brought my food out in stages. First the waffle. Six minutes later here comes the bacon.6 minutes after that the hot link . I asked where is the milk I ordered. The waitress says we don't have milk. It's clearly on the menu. So your out or is this an old menu an you never had it? I see why Chime Time trashed this place. I guess since no one is in the place eating there's no since of urgency to get the food to the people who are eating there. To top it off they add a gratuity to the bill instead of you deciding to pay what you think it should be. I would advise going somewhere else than here. The waffle cafe is down the street. read more

I'm visiting Michigan and my cousin wanted to try chicken and waffles for the first time. We found this place and took a chance. Parking was surprisingly available across the street, which hasn't been our experience in Detroit. We walked in and waited to be seated for about 5 minutes. A line began to form behind us and there was a line of people waiting to pick up their food inside by the bar. Several staff walked past us and I thought to myself, bad customer service. Our waiter, Marlon was very nice and when he eventually got to us, he apologized for the delay. We ordered the: -Shrimp n Grits: Shrimp was pretty good, grits were okay but my friend who is originally from South Carolina said they were amazing. So maybe take his word for it. -Big Mamas: The chicken was well seasoned and moist. For my sides, I choose collard greens (a bit salty), mac n cheese (yum!) and candied yams (delicious). As I type this, I'm realizing they forgot my cornbread. Insert sad face here. -Big Red: The waffle was huge and fluffy. Wings were great too. 4 stars because the service could have been better.
