I love Kurai. Been coming here for years now. However I do have to complain that the restaurant has not been the same since COVID. You literally have kids running around touching tables and plates. Some have masks on but most of the kids take off their masks as they're walking around the restaurant. YUCK. Parents don't say anything. Employees ignore it too. I love that they have a sushi and Asian buffet with unlimited goods. However, when I went last week, you can no longer serve yourself. Instead you have an employee who doesn't even understand English serve you. I had a hard time communicating with her cause she didn't know what I was talking about even though I was pointing to the food. Anyways, employees serve you the buffet items as you stand behind some rope. They serve it to you in a styrofoam plate that can only hold three items at max unless you're willing to layer you're food on top of each other . Yuck. Buffet is really unorganized. You have some employees hustling and doing a great job. You have others just standing there chit chatting. The host lady at the front doesn't speak English either. She didn't understand our transaction question. Our waitress was really good though. She was quick and attentive. Definitely left her a tip for the hard work she's putting. Food is great. I highly recommend coming to Kurai for their buffet! It's a much better deal than ordering combos/meals to-go because you get a chance to sample a bit of everything. The buffet is reasonably priced at $12.99 on weekdays and $13.99 on weekends. The waiters are kind as well and constantly check up on you to make sure you have enough drinks and napkins. The interior atmosphere of Kurai is a bit dated, but it is overall pretty clean for a buffet. There is a wide variety of rolls, including many common ones like the Philadelphia roll, California roll, and spicy tuna roll. They also have a good amount of fried sushi rolls that incorporate shrimp tempura. It's also great that the hot entrees are included with the buffet price. I highly recommend saving some room for the Mongolian Beef and General Tso's chicken because they are well seasoned and flavorful! My main complaint about the hot food is that every time I grabbed the crab rangoons (wontons), they were consistently overcooked and hard as a rock. Honestly, the ambience & environment of this restaurant is very different from traditional buffets. It's fun, lively and aesthetically pleasing. Not as many choices for non-sushi food like traditional buffets, but definitely much better quality. ESPECIALLY their cold/salad section. Not the basic, gross old iceberg lettuce with carrots and cheese lol. Great assortment, just a couple of desserts though. Only tried their arroz con leche and it was okay. And they keep this and the rest of the food line areas, pretty clean. They have SO MANY sushi options!!! I'm not picky and love to try new things so I literally had one of each, and I was amazed at how many were so delicious! I'm not a cream cheese fan but they had some good combinations that I actually enjoyed a few with it. The only thing is that I don't like how room temperature they are lol. But regardless they were good, no food poisoning yet they actually have fried sushi too! And one more thing, I'm obsessed with their veggie seafood soup. So yummy with a little kick to it. 4-stars because unfortunately the servers we've gotten have been pretty bad, they stand around on their phones & act bothered when we have to go out of our way to get their attention, aside from our first. I have enjoyed the Kurai in Pharr, but unfortunately was disappointed in the new restaurant in Edinburg. The wait staff was great trying to keep up with the customers. There seemed to be a few more items (i liked the steamed dumplings), but with so many (5) different people making the sushi rolls they seemed to lack consistency compared to the Pharr location. My biggest complaint was the that it reminded me of a Kurai Cafeteria with way to many people and noise along with the music too. It seemed like I was at Golden Corrall. There was a lack of plates, which you had to reach underneath and between people to get. Sorry but next time, we will go back to Pharr. A year later... ran out of both rices, no bowls for soup for over 15 minutes +, ran out of dishes but finally replaced with cold wet ones (shouldn't they be warm from being freshly washed?), never was able to get beef and onion that ran out while here. To top it off, my wife found a piece of metal in her pudding banana cookie desert. Go to Pharr. Best: After telling about the metal, the Asst Manager offered us two $1.99 drinks for our next visit. Visiting from out of town, my boyfriend's sister recommended we go here for sushi. The dynamic of the buffet is interesting, to say the least. When we were being seated there were a few dirty tables where we had to wait for someone to come clean them. The initial table they sat us out was already being occupied by someone who was in line for the buffet. I've never had sushi with so much cream cheese and so many options with hot Cheetos. We got to meet the owner as she was in town getting everything in shape and she gave me quite a bit of background on the restaurant and I learned they started in Mexico and have lots of them. She was very diligent in the quality of the food and even brought us a roll that had ran out. My favorite is the roll with mango and caramelized walnuts. The bourbon chicken is amazing! And the multitudes of glorious sushi is delightful. The kids price is very reasonable. BTW it's not "expensive" if you consider the variety of sushi available and other options. It's also a few dollars cheaper Monday thru Friday but might be a promotion. However, when we returned about 2 weeks later the quality has slightly decreased and thus the justification for the minus one star. I felt there was a tad odd taste to anything with raw fish and so did my husband. The wait staff is very efficient and create a friendly but not in your face kind of way which is good. However, both times we came I noticed that all the hostess, front and back, could be more personable and smile. A greeter represents the restaurant as they are a customer's, especially new ones, first contact with the restaurant. Also the sushi staff could smile as well. Never again! Went to Kurai on Trenton today and had a terrible experience. On bite 2 I discovered a piece of something metallic but flexible. I called my waitress but a waiter intercepted & asked what I needed. I said "I found this in the mushrooms." He took it and promptly whisked it away. No apology, no nothing. I expected him to at least ask what the metallic piece was in so they could throw it out and make a fresh batch (this is a buffet) but nothing. Although it wasn't the nicest thing to happen, it didn't hurt me and I know stuff happens sometimes - it's whatever. It wasn't until the friend I was having lunch with called the manager over for a separate incident that things really took a turn for the worse. The manager, who I believe may be the owner, "Fei," came over and started talking to my friend. My friend mentioned the piece of metallic stuff in my food. Fei never apologized. She first blamed my waitress. I made it clear that it had nothing to do with my waitress as, when I called her, it was a waiter who came to me and took the thing off my finger. Then she said it was the waiter's fault and that he probably didn't understand me because he doesn't speak English. I told her that I could have explained it to him in either English or Spanish but he just took it and walked away and didn't give me an opportunity. She then said she has to train him all he time and pointed over and over to her head and said "he still won't get it no matter how much we train him." She repeated several times that he is dumb. She then blamed it on the dishwashers because the metallic thingie was a piece of those metallic things they use to scrub the dishes. She then said the waiter with the green eyes is better because he's a Christian pastor. WTH? I told her that has nothing to do with anything. She then called the original waitress over and began to berate & blame her, telling her, in her very heavy Asian accent, that she "needs to learn English." I told her it wasn't the waitress and that she had attended me many times at another location and she was always pleasant & we never had any trouble communicating. It was at this point that I asked her to just leave as she was making the situation way worse and making herself look horrible. She persisted in going on about how the waiters and waitresses always speak to her in Spanish and need to learn English. I was flabbergasted. "Fei," if you have a problem with folks that only speak Spanish to the point you're going to demean them, don't hire them & you may want to learn some better communication skills yourself before pointing fingers. Food was lacking flavor big time. All the sushi tasted almost identical, and it was a bit warm to my tasting. The buffet is very limited in options, I'd understand if it were super tasty and you don't need many choices, like "Ming's Dynasty" in Denver, CO, for example.
