I wanted to thank you for the free evaluation you did of me, and for letting me know that I did not need braces. I greatly appreciated your honest appraisal, especially as my dentist had tried to talk me into getting Invisalign. I had been having jaw tension, and after many attempted solutions over two years, I finally found the problem. I wanted to share the solution in case it might help others. My problem turned out to be undiagnosed sleep apnea which was causing facial tension. I now use a CPAP machine at night, and all the facial tension is gone. You kindly saw me for a free evaluation. I had been experiencing jaw tension. At one point, my jaw popped as I was chewing and it was very painful. I also would rather frequently accidently bite the side of my tongue. Before I ever had jaw tension, my dentist had tried to talk me into getting Invisalign, so I visited you to check if I might need braces. You did an x-ray and exam, and you said I did not need braces. You told me if anyone tells me I need braces then I should run. You suggested yoga for stress relief.  Over the last two years I tried yoga, cardio exercise, strength training to improve posture, doctor's visits, physical therapy, dry needling therapy to release facial tension, ergonomic work space, hypnotherapy, and a chiropractor. I've had all kinds of tests done, and everything came back normal. Finally, a doctor I saw suggested I have a sleep test, even though I sleep perfectly fine and my wife who is a light sleeper says she never hears me snoring. The sleep test revealed I have sleep apnea. I got a CPAP machine, and this has made my sleep much more restful and eliminated all the jaw tension. I went to Kumra Orthodontics to get fitted for Invisalign. From the time I called the office the service has been great. The receptionist Francine is always in a pleasant mood and does not hesitate to flash her beautiful smile upon your arrival. The staff is top notch. Jennifer () and Iris are always a pleasure to be around. They do their jobs quickly without making you feel rushed, and always have nice conversation while doing what needs to be done. I recently transferred my orthodontic treatment to Dr. Kumra's office, and it was the best decision I've made in quite some time. Prior to scheduling an appointment at Kumra Orthodontics, I gave the office a call. The person who answered the phone had a very kind, warm voice and made me feel comfortable with explaining the reason for my call. She assured me that she would pass my information along to Dr. Kumra and that he would call me back. Shortly thereafter, he called me back as promised. Excellent turn-around time! I was scheduled for a consultation a few days later. My first visit was during the holiday season. The office smelled like Christmas trees and there were little silver snowflakes hanging from the ceiling! This all was very cool to me. Also, the waiting area is spacious and comfortable, yet there's rarely anyone in it because patients are called back promptly. The staff is friendly and efficient. Literally everyone is smiling and being pleasant! One of the things I like the most about the office is that each room is sectioned off. At the last orthodontist I went to, all of the chairs were beside each other, so there wasn't really any opportunity for one-on-one visits with your orthodontist. Everyone was seated beside each other. At Kumra Orthodontics, you have your own space and that actually does a lot to contribute to each patient feeling like attention is being paid specifically to them. It's perfect. Dr. Kumra himself is also amazing. He is very professional in all regards. Prior to starting to work with me, he informed me that he'd need to call my last orthodontist as a professional courtesy before moving forward. That was very admirable in my opinion. Everyone who wrote a previous review is correct, Dr. Kumra is amazing!! I cannot explain my high disdain for those in the dental profession due to consistent misdiagnosis, circumlocutions and overcharging every single time I go. But Dr. Kumra was steady and sure, albeit I just needed rebonding of a permanent retainer. He not only fixed my retainer appropriately, but then talked me through additional options as well as scheduling a follow up for three weeks out. I didn't feel rushed in his chair, quite the opposite; for this most minute of repairs he took half an hour. It felt great to have someone who not only seemed like he loved his job, but who wanted to take the time to ensure thorough comprehension before departure. By far the best orthodontist in the DMV. Hands down! When I went in for my consultation Dr. K showed me the results of his previous clients and methodically walked me through the process and took the time to answer all my questions. He was not pushy or "sales-y" at all. I actually took the night to think about it in and the next day I called the office and told him I was in and they got me started. A few days later my trays came in. After 24 hours I was so frustrated and irritated with the trays. As I was warned me, it was awkward getting use to this foreign plastic object rubbing against my teeth. I called Dr. K (on a weekend, by the way) and he urged me to give it 72 more hours. I fought through it and stuck with it and it has been the best experience since then. I am about 75% done with my treatment and my results are awesome. So glad I stuck with it and worked with Dr. K. Overall: Dr. Bob Kumra and his team are THE BEST. I had (clear) ceramic brackets and a silver metal wire for braces. I begged him for the ceramic braces because I was 34 when I got them on. A lot of doctor's prefer the metal brackets because they believe they are more durable (Hi, kids!). In addition to braces in my 30's I qualified for orthognathic surgery... upper and lower jaw surgery. What a treat! JK. Orthognathic Surgery: My surgeon was Dr. Andrea Bonnick (Chair of Howard University's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and who I also highly recommend). In preparation for the surgery, Dr. Kumra and Dr. Bonnick coordinated every step of the way and took the time to meet with my parents before and after the surgery. He also coordinated care with my dentist, Dr. Terry Kristalis (I also recommend him -- I have the best teeth and jaw doctors!!) Staff Demeanor: Dr. Kumra has a wonderful bedside manner. He is friendly and kind and his first priority is proper care and technique. His staff is also wonderful, always friendly, and responsive to your needs as a patient. If I ever had questions or concerns I was able to reach Dr. Kumra and his staff right away. Office: Dr. Kumra's office is downtown and conveniently a few blocks from the Farragut North and Farragut West metro stations. He takes insurance and offers some payment plans. It was a smooth process from an insurance and payment perspective and his appointments were almost always on time. Tips for Future Patients: Get yourself a Water Pik/Water Flosser - I still use mine and I haven't had braces in months (they really help to keep your teeth and gums cleaner). Buy at Target or Bed Bath with 20% off. Dr. Kumra sells one for a discount as well. Glide Threader Floss is one of the best products for flossing because flossing with braces is the worst but make sure you do it. I like a white smile and wish I had whitened my teeth some before getting the braces (just with Crest Whitestrips, nothing fancy or professional). This is personal preference but I think white teeth blend in better with the clear ceramic brackets. Also coffee, tea, and spices like turmeric yellow the rubber bands that go around the brackets making your teeth appear less white. I never felt that drinking from a straw really helped to limit the discoloration of the bands. You will survive, it is just something to keep in mind. I didn't stop drinking coffee but I did limit curry etc until a few days before I was going to have my bands replaced. Do Your Part: Wear your retainer! Wear your Invisalign (otherwise it will take much longer than estimated to straighten your teeth). Dr. Kumra and staff will tell you what you need to do but the patient has an impact on the results and the timing of those results so keep your end of the bargain. It will be worth it and you will be happy you followed the "rules." Dr. Kumra estimated how long I would have my braces and he was right on point. I also was a good patient. ;) Summary: I've been in Washington DC for twelve years and finding reliable and good medical care that is also covered by insurance can be challenging at times. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Kumra and his staff. Reviews don't lie, there is a reason he has a million FIVE STAR ratings. The biggest challenge in writing a review for Kumra Orthodontics is to somehow capture how outstanding every aspect of my experience was without sounding cheesy or over-the-top. Dr. Kumra is as kind, thoughtful, and professional as is humanly possible. He runs his business right. First, he provides great service. My teeth were all over the place but Dr. Kumra straightened them out. Second, he and his staff are ultra professional. I shopped around before I decided on Kumra Orthodontics and his prices were the best. Perhaps most cool of all is that I have a genuine friend in Dr. Kumra. As I searched through orthodontists my criteria never included, "awesome person that I'd like to hang out with in real life" but as it turns that is what I got (in addition to getting my teeth fixed and not breaking the bank). I had a very good experience with Kumra Orthodontics. My permanent wire retainer was coming loose from my top teeth. For unknown reasons, a different orthodontist turned me down saying they do not perform this type of repair, but Dr. Kumra was able to take me. I am a very nervous dental/orthodontal patient, but Dr. Kumra and his staff were very kind and tried to put me at ease. The office is very clean and everyone was professional.
