I seriously owe this place my sight! If i can give it a 100 stars i would! I'm from Ann Arbor and…read morewas at a funeral/burial in Southfield. My eyes started bothering me, i figured i needed some drops (since they felt dry) and figured it was from smudges of mascara i got on my contacts! As i started to drive, it became almost unbearable. I was driving and realized that i shouldn't be. I couldn't keep my eyes open and the sunny bright day was painful. Instead of driving to the hall for the funeral, i called my mom and begged her to grab me eye drops and went to her house. The drops killed. Nothing was making it better. I couldn't close or open my eyes, the pain was excruciating. That is when i decided i needed to see someone and ASAP (as it was nearing end of work day about 2:30pm). Since i don't live in town the first place i called was my Mothers ophthalmologist who unfortunately turned me away (they don't see new patients for emergency's) and told me to head to the ER or urgent care. I knew i needed a specialist and did not have hours to spare! So i came across affiliated eye surgeons and Kristy answered. She asked for my insurance and told me i needed a global referral from my doctor and gave me all the information to give my PCP. She said we will get you in, don't worry. She was amazing and helped me sort everything out! Now i get there and everyone of the staff is extremely nice. I did not wait long before they took me to the exam room where a super sweet lady (sorry i don't recall her name but she was great) did a preliminary exam. When she completed, she took me over to another room. There walks in the sweetest Doctor! Dr. Lindsay Rubin asked me if i was okay and did not scold me about anything but actually sympathized with my pain. She and her assistant Ashley were wonderful. She took a look in my eyes and there it was... a dreaded corneal ulcer in both eyes!!! She told me how important it was to catch early and put me on antibiotics ASAP (1 drop per eye every two hours). She told me to notify her ASAP if it doesn't get better. She told me she would call me Saturday morning to confirm that it was healing. She even suggested to give my info to an ophthalmologist in Ann Arbor to follow up. Since we need to do many visits in a short period of time to stop it from doing long term damage. I refused the polite transfer. She was incredible and caring and her bedside manner can't be beat! Plus she knew what was going on and i wanted to be in the best hands, so i will be driving from Ann Arbor to see her for my follow up bright and early Monday morning. They all did such a wonderful job and i am so thankful to them as i could have lost sight in both eyes!! I will never go anywhere else! I will be going to the practice from now on for everything! Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart! I actually felt well enough today to look at my phone and write this book on how amazing you all are! It's all thanks to you!!!

I think the world of Dr. Varanelli! A few years back I…read moresuffered damage in the line of duty from fine pieces of shrapnel. My eyesight was compromised and I needed experienced individuals for my after surgery care. Naturally, I was extremely cautious in trusting my sight with, yet, another stranger. I was originally slated to see Dr. Simone. An emergency arouse and I had the option of rescheduling for a later date or seeing Dr. Varanelli at roughly the same time and date. Fate is a strange thing. Now, I won't see any other ophthalmologist. The minute I met the doctor I became at ease. He has an incredible way about him. Very calming and polite. A funny man that's the utmost professional. I learned about different tests he performs. He has the ability to provide insight to my overall health by looking in the back of my eyes (I believe there's a small pun in that last sentence). The staff there is very accommodating and efficient. I worked with Emily today and it was good times. I can't tell you wether or not she is great at her job or using that high-tech Star Trek looking stuff the right way. But I passed all my tests with flying colours so I guess she's wonderful. Great news in that my eyes are almost exactly as screwed up as last year, no worse! Yay! I was also given a coffee mug full of candy on the way out. Thank you, Simone eye. C U next year! Dr. Varanelli and Dr. Simone are Located on Ryan north of 12 Mile rd. in Warren and in Macomb on Hall road near Tilch. Call for an appointment to see where your doctor will be on what day. 2/20

I just wanted to order glasses (my eye exam was months ago but I only ordered contacts then). I called to ask if they take my new insurance to order glasses, and they told me to just come in, without answering my question. I come in and ask the receptionist the insurance question (after she ignored me without greeting for a couple minutes), and she just says, "go ask Debbie" (the lady who sells glasses). I go in and quietly wait for Debbie while she's with another customer, and when the other customer leaves I ask her the same insurance question. Her response: "I need to talk to other people so just wait out there." It was a simple effing question. JUST TELL ME IF YOU TAKE MY INSURANCE SO I CAN STOP WASTING TIME. I did not wait... I left, and so the search for a new eye doctor begins.

What started out to be a pleasant experience turned into a nightmare . . . I had an appointment at…read more3:15 p.m. (needed to leave work early, or course), and was taken in immediately (nice). I had my yearly eye exam (or MOST of it), then received a blepharoplasty test (for upper eyelid surgery, a "lift" so to say). Between my partial "exam" and this test my eyes had been poked and prodded for nearly 1 hour, so needless to say, my eyes hurt terribly and I had a horrible headache. Apparently I passed this test and was taken in to see Dr. Rubin (in all fairness, Dr. Rubin was very nice). Opposed to discussing my "vision" all conversation was about this surgery. I was exhausted and in pain. After all was said and done, Dr. Rubin stated that they now wanted to "finish" my eye exam by dilating my eyes for completion. This, she stated would take yet another 1/2 hour. I told her my eyes and head were already hurting and might I come back for this "dilation" the next day. She told me that would be fine (yet she never mentioned that I would be charged ANOTHER $45.00 for the completion of my eye test (ANOTHER office visit charge). She also stated that she would have ALL the codes needed given to their "tech and surgery scheduler" so when I came in the following day everything would be ready. When I arrived the next day the tech took me in immediately and began telling me about my surgery, i.e. when, where, etc. I stopped her and asked, prior to scheduling anything, what was the cost? Apparently Dr. Rubin hadn't given her ANY information regarding "codes", hence I waited 20 minutes for her to gather this information. Upon her return she stated "well, the Doctors portion to you will be $1,200 and the surgery center will be 20% of your deductible. My deductible is $3,000!!! The tech found it unfortunate that I hadn't "used more of my deductible" then the cost wouldn't be so high". I couldn't believe when she stated "well, something may come along down the road, so maybe you can wait until closer to the end of the year". Oh my God!!! Thank you for wishing an illness on me so as I can "use up my deductible". At that point she also stated that Dr. Rubin "was sorry" but to finish my eye exam (dilation of the pupils), I would be charged ANOTHER $45.00 for the office visit. Needless to say, I walked out. I've always been a patient of the Balian Eye Center, and the only reason I chose this particular place was due to location (near my office). Of course, I paid $45.00 for the first visit and I'm sure something was billed to my insurance company, so now I have to wait another full year to be able to get a COMPLETE eye exam. Stay away form this place.

The receptionist said she wasn't familiar with those treatments and I would have to come in for a consultation to be quoted. I told her this wouldn't work as I had already been to another consultation hours away just to get a quote only to be told that it was out of my range and my insurance didn't cover it. I asked her again, for a price quote for out of pocket price. She said she would ask the doctor. His response was to come in for a consultation and he has other unspecified treatments he can offer. I asked her what these treatments were, and explained again the distance, cost, not to mention it would likely not be covered now that I had already done another consult elsewhere; she couldn't answer the question. I understand that all physicians want to bill for a consultation; but at what point does this become not only illogical, but also unethical? Your receptionists don't know what kind of treatments you offer, or what they cost. Treatments aren't covered by insurance, but you can't share the out of pocket cost up front? Why would you want a patient to pay money for a consult if you're not even sure they'd be able to access the care/not sure you even provide the care they need? Sounds like an insurance scam to me! Anyway, leaving this here in case you're looking for the same. I'd recommend avoiding this physician, he doesn't appear to take his hippocratic oath seriously.
