Surprisingly good! There's not a lot of options for good Chinese food in SW and Kuang's Kitchen is a new contender in the neighborhood. While it's not the best Chinese food I've ever had it's definitely better than some of the other places around and worth a try. The food portions were generous and came out hot. The pork fried rice is actually some of the best pork fried rice I've had in awhile. My husband judges Chinese restaurants based on the quality of their sesame beef which he considered "acceptable" here but he prefers the sesame beef at our usual take out joint Hunan Pearl. I preferred the rice here and after considering the quality of the rest of the meal we called it a draw and said it would be worth it to come back here. Plus they're open to 9pm everyday which is great for late night americanized Chinese food cravings. I just wish they had delivery or a website with their menu to make placing a to-go order easier. read more

My husband and I went there reading some of the great reviews but we were utterly disappointed. We had ordered the schezwan garlic chicken and the curry shrimp with onions and bell peppers. When the food arrived, there was no shrimp. Both dishes were with chicken. We let it go thinking the food would be good but we were served with another dismality. The curry 'shrimp' smelled strongly of uncooked curry powder, was flavorless and the chicken was all mushy. The other dish tasted sweet and orangy. I had no clue why the name schezwan was used for it. All in all, we were not impressed. I don't think we would be going back there. read more

My boyfriend and I discovered this place about 6 months after moving to the PDX area. We had been going to a different Chinese restaurant about 1.2 miles from us (we used to live in Garden Home district off Oleson & Garden Home / Multnomah) and it was always alright at best though they had good customer service. One night we decided to look for another place and stumbled upon this hidden gem! They're right next to what I believe is a 7/11 and right down the road from PCC Sylvania. We always get the Combo Dinners #2 & #5! They give such a great amount of food too. With lots of soup and tea if you ask. Excellent customer service, prompt phone answering for takeout, and quick preparation (about 10-15 minutes). Anyway, we moved down to Lake Oswego (after moving to Beaverton for a year) and live about 11 minutes from here! We love that we can call in for takeout, and drive right on over and the food is ready to go! We love Kuang's Kitchen and will miss this place when we move to Florida next month. read more

Got take-out for dinner and it was fine. Was excited to try it living close by and seeing the high ratings. Pros: -ready in just 15 minutes -staff were VERY friendly, even giving us an extra soup and drink for free -huuuge portions -great prices Cons: -quality/taste was just ok. Got a general tsao's chicken combo and the Mongolian beef. After having the latter at Szechuan Chef, these just couldn't compare. I'm glad I tried it, and I might return if I needed a really quick meal. But otherwise, I would drive a bit farther to Szechuan Chef in South Portland. read more

The good: Owner was very friendly! We were the only ones there and were seated immediately, facility was very clean and tidy. Hot and sour soup was fine. Tea was ok. Water was refilled often. Egg roll was good. Prices were good. Extra yellow mustard was provided when asked. Everything was hot. The not so good: Soups and sauces were slopped onto the plate beneath them. Made them look unappetizing. There was NO artificial sweetener for us diabetics. How about one small container if someone asks for it? Spring roll was a little small. Soup was barely touched before the #5 combos were served. Fried rice seemed fresh but not much flavor. Chicken chow menu had little flavor, the noodles were rather gummy, few vegetables and deep fried chicken pieces in it. Odd, a first for us. The General Tso had too much 5 spice in it. We have never had it made that way and the taste lingered over everything. We gave it a try but probable won't be back. read more

Never again. The food was barely decent enough to eat. I ordered chicken chow mein and received a very large portion of it, which was tragic considering how bad it tasted. Greasy, flavorless, and probably the worst noodles I've ever had from a Chinese take-out place. My order was a call-in order so I had to go pick it up. When I arrived home ready to eat I realized they hadn't packed a single utensil in my bag, which was sloppy and careless considering I had ordered a large egg drop soup, chicken chow mein, and an order of scallop and shrimp Kung Pao style. Everything was flavorless and greasy. I was expecting at least the soup to be ...salty or, something! But no, even the soup was flavorless. Whoever their cook is needs to be trained or fired. All of this came out to $26. I even tipped $5 as courtesy before leaving, but this was obviously before I knew the horrors that awaited me inside of my take-away bag. Jeez. Never again. I've been coming to Kuang's Kitchen since I moved to Portland over 5 years ago. The owners have always been very kind and down-to-earth. This is the only Chinese place I go to. The food is excellent and never fails to impress. I kept coming back for take-out throughout the lock downs but now they're open to dine in again! Awe! I really wanted to like this place but I've even had grocery store Chinese that was better :( The sweet and sour prawns and chicken were 98% batter that additionally had an odd rubbery texture. The sauce was inappropriately vinegary tasting and thin. The steamed rice was burned and so were a few pieces of my chicken. I ordered hot and sour soup with my meal but they gave me egg drop instead. The woman who took my order as well as the employees I saw working seemed miserable. Honestly best Chinese I have had in Portland. Great service, super friendly atmosphere. Huge portions, I always get three or four main courses and a pork fried rice and it feeds my family of five, including 3 constantly starving teenagers, very well with a lot of leftovers. Straight up: The BEST Chinese food I've ever shoveled into my fat face. The orange chicken was a revelation: crispy bits of chicken in a dark, delicious sauce. Seriously yumbo. The chicken chow mein was great. The beef with broccoli was superb; I ordered it based on one of the reviews here. I don't even LIKE that dish, but I'm converted! The meat was so tender. Sweet and sour pork, spring roll and egg flower soup were also good. Portions: Ridiculously large. We stuffed ourselves on the orange chicken and combination dinner (served "family style" rather than all on one platter). Prices: More than fair. All that for $23. I genuinely worry about their business model. Kuang, are you making money? I want you to. But these portions... you know what? You do you, honey. The restaurant has lots of tables and is welcoming and clean. The couple who run the place were friendly, charming and attentive. What more could you ask for? I wish I could give more stars. I cannot recommend going to this place, ever. PROS: - Large portions. - Courteous, quick service. - Low price. CONS - Everything else. - Food is *unbelievably* bland. - Potstickers were unpleasantly chewy and flavorless. - Spring rolls were plain and boring, not even very crispy. - Broccoli in the broccoli chicken was mushy. Not soft, but mush. - All the meats are boiled to the point of being soggy, no texture or flavor at all. So much boiling, that the plastic take-out bags had 1/4 inch of soggy water sloshing around in them. - Sweet and sour sauce was runny to the point of being watery. - Sweet and sour chicken was mostly bread, veggies in it were not even close to fresh. - Noodles were starchy and dry. - Hot and Sour soup was neither hot nor sour, the most bland I've ever eaten. - Wonton soup was tasteless and diluted, just boring vegetable broth. - Rice was overcooked and dry. I was incredibly disappointed by the quality of the food here. Everything seemed cheap, rushed, and over-cooked or cooked haphazardly and poorly. I have zero positive feedback about the food from this meal. This is unfortunate because I do want to support local restaurants, but I cannot lie - I would rather go eat junky Panda Express than eat at this place again. Was really hoping this would be tasty based on the reviews - but have found what mostly people have been saying that the taste is very bland and oily. We ordered the Kung Pao chicken, but found very little taste at all. I was actually quite surprised and was left trying to figure out what I was actually tasting other than oil and salt? I couldn't taste any really flavor or spice. The folks here seem nice. It did take us about 30 minutes or more to get our food and seemed like maybe only two folks were here. We did notice a pair of White folk get served quickly as well as received their food promptly, not sure if it was just timing. The portions are large, if you want to try it out maybe just order one and make up your own mind. We definitely won't be coming back. :( read more

When picking up our food the lady at the front was so nice and hard working and she gave us a large portion of free egg flour soup with our order. Because of her and the place being so clean, I really wanted to like this place. The food, however, was just not good. We spent $30 and given the portions sizes I felt we got a lot for what we spent untill we started eating. I will say it is difficult to find good Chinese food on this side of town, so I'm not exactly surprised by how our food was. The Kung pao was that, only tofu. There was minimal amount of sauce and no veggies, overall just very dry and bland. The orange chicken I did not personally try, but my sister did not like it and said it was hard and overcooked. The soup that was given to us was unfortunately the worst of it, very thick with the consistency of a raw egg white, not at all like any I've had in the past so we did not eat this either. Wow...the portions are huge!! I had a #1 dinner which was bbq pork, chicken chow mein, egg flower soup, sweet and sour pork and a pork fried rice. I think it would have been plenty for 2 and still had leftovers. We also ordered sesame chicken and some crab rangoon. We will have leftovers till Sunday....today is Tuesday. So....The food is good. It's not a mind blowing, life changing meal, but good. The price was $30 for everything and my star rating is more based on portions and value than taste. I would recommend giving them a shot. I got the hot and sour soup which was ok, the spring rolls are small but have good flavor but the 10 ingredient chow mein and the Kung pao chicken was really good. I was excited to try this place. I'm new in the area, they have great reviews and the food looks amazing from peoples pictures. I got home with my food and noticed how hot it was. I was surprised it took me about 10 mins to get home. I started eating and realized both things I ordered , fried rice and orange chicken, were microwaved/ reheated. The rice was dry the orange chicken was soggy and the sauce was almost solid from being microwaved to long. I can't make this up! We all know what reheated Chinese food tastes like and the texture you can't hide. This place is a joke! I will never come here again!!! read more

I didn't hate this place, but I didn't love it either. I went twice. The first time was better than the second. Tonight I had the combo #5. The soup was the consistency of raw egg whites, so that was a bust. The other four items were OK, but nothing stood out. I ate my fill and had enough leftovers for an entire second meal, so that's kind of nice, except there's nothing in the box that's calling my name. The portion of chow mein was HUGE! It had that carnival yakisoba flavor...and I mean that in a good way! The waitress was insanely nice! Even threw in an extra soup and rice for 2. I will say that I wasn't crazy about the fried rice, but I also drove it 30 mins home before digging in. Easily fixable with a quick fry in the wok and some soy sauce. Oh! We've ordered take-out here a few times since moving to the neighborhood. It's always hot and on-time. Our favorite dishes, by far, are the kung pao tofu and the orange chicken. This place is hit or miss with some of their dishes. The chow mein and the Szechuan beef were super bland when I got them (both ordered together so maybe it was an off night) so much so that I didn't finish them. I felt very wasteful because Kuang's serves HUGE portions. Your one dinner entree can be shared between three to four hungry adults. I would know, because I have a large appetite and have attempted to murder half of an entree and we still had leftovers between two of us. Their rice is ok, but I prefer fluffier rice. The last time I went to pick up our food, the lady remembered me, and I've only been there three times. She threw in some egg flower soup while saying it's vegetarian because she must have remembered that my partner is vegetarian?! These are good people. read more

The food was quite good and was exactly what I would expect from a Chinese place like this. The portions are enormous - we came for dinner. I swear my asparagus chicken plate could be four meals! The asparagus was oh so fresh and cooked just right for me. What really blew me away was the hostesses kindness and level of service. She gave us extra rice and a bunch of soup with our to go boxes. She was friendly and thanked us and was personable. It seems all too rare to get such a gracious server/owner anymore. That sets them apart in my mind.
