9.2.23 KTSF 26 booth was at the Hong Kong Carnival today in Milpitas, CA. I explained that I like the station and my father watches nightly. It was around 1230pm and k asked the older shoulder length hair lady if I could have a blue ktsf giveaway tote bag. She said come back at 1. I also asked if I could have a anson lo mini poster on the table and she gave me like the smallest one. Not really a big deal. But the vibe I get from this booth team was not good. If you aren't enthusiastic about ktsf or connecting with people who enjoy your programming, then why bother setting up a tent. Mabye I am not their target audience. I heard them complaining that things get snatched up so fast. Well it's a free event. The least you can do is fake it and.act professional. Don't complain about people taking freebies (I didn't take any, I think they were saying in general about not having a lot of promos left). So disappointed today in ktsf. I didn't actually take a photo of their booth but I have a photo of the carnival to prove I was there. Tune in on Saturdays 5 pm to 6 pm to KTSF-TV (Comcrap Cable Ch 8) to a new show from Hong Kong called "Those Were The Tastes". This interesting documentary showcases traditional Cantonese cuisine in Hong Kong, old shops and restaurants that stuck it old skool all these years, and almost long forgotten tastes, some that you will likely never see in the USA (or if so, just isn't the same). Last Saturday's episode saw the hosts visit Lin Heung Tea House in Hong Kong (80+ year old dim sum joint), while they dined on pork stomach siu mai (oink oink!) where cholestrol is vital to the old taste, a humongous meat and veg steamed bun (one will probably fill you up for the entire meal), and a steamed chicken roll (wrapped with dried mountain yam skin) to name a few. Later in the segment, one of the hosts, an accomplished chef, demonstrates how to make pork liver siu mai and some sort of beef roll. Then they visited a 50+ year old tea shop and interviewed the owners. And later a 5th generation family business that made bamboo steamers for dim sum (by hand) that sells locally and exports to Chinese restaurants worldwide. Very educational program, although unfortunately it is in Cantonese dialog (with Chinese subtitles). If you can understand or read, you will learn things like -Why was it called "dim sum"? Yes we all know it means "touch the heart". There's even one crazy explanation of the origin of the name that involved stabbing a person to death x100000000 times with a toothpick. But....legend has it that a general who won a victorious war a long time ago wanted to show his appreciation to his troops, and small tiny bites were prepared for them. It originated as "yut deem deem sum (yee)" in Cantonese, meaning a small gesture or token with the giver having the person's best interest at heart. -Why do Cantonese people tap their fingers or knuckles while tea is poured into their cup at dim sum (or dinner)? They say one of the emperors visited a tea house and wanted to check out dis shizzle named dim sum. One of the restaurant staff or owner poured tea for the emperor, and at some point the emperor returned in kind. Etiquette dictated that the guy should kowtow to the emperor to show his thanks (for getting tea poured into his cup) but somehow that was reduced to a simulated kowtow using the knuckles or finger tapping instead (so not to give the emperor away, that he's eating down to earth fare in public, versus say, The French Laundry or Michael Mina). Keep watching, if only for the footage, it should get interesting. read more

How do you know you're a straight G? Four letters...KTSF Anything and everything that we take for granted within the realm of mainstream and popular culture got its start here. Way before the PC revolution and the internet. All you needed was your TV. You didn't even need cable! Multi-Culti Programming KTSF brought Asia into your living room. While there were Spanish channels, KTSF aired programming from China, India, Iran, Korea, Japan and the Philippines. For many it was the first time to see the bewildering mix of dance and sexiness of Bollywood. Iron Chef Forget that crap you see on the Food Network and Cooking Channel. This was the OG biz from Fuji TV where the culinary action was subtitled. Fast paced and melodramatic, KTSF was one of the few stations that brought this import and spurned dozens of imitations for today's TV. Kung Fu Theatre You usually put up with the movie just to see the interviews. Local sifu Tat Mau Wong interviewed masters and guests from all the different styles. Some a little hokey and a few with some doubt. The majority though were a fascinating mix of their style's lore and modern interpretation of their moves. Last and not least...long time and venerable...CMC The California Music Channel was right there before Yo MTV Raps and similar programming on BET. It was probably through this program that the Bay Area hip hop scene caught the attention of markets throughout the US. Too Short, Hammer, N2Deep, E-40, Jocelyn Enriquez, One Voice, Buffy, got their visual air play here. Who can forget Franzen and the Trace Dog? More importantly, the voice of the Bay, Chuy Gomez. There are of course many other reasons such as the HK movies shown late Saturday night after the Japanese programming. Speaking of, some of the commercials seemed to never change. Heck, the commercials were sometimes just as entertaining. I think it was the only time I saw a commercial for instant Pho during the Vietnamese programming. But as cable channels expand, so does not the programming at KTSF. Sad really that you can't see TV from foreign shores or not hear the word of God from an Evangelical in the wee morning hours. Many within the Filipino community remember the days of Manila Manila post the EDSA revolution in the Philippines and with the community in the spotlight and hopes for a better future. Manila Manila was one of those shows that did a report on the club scene back in the late 80s and early 90s. Probably one of the reasons of why the Bay Area is so Pinoycentric. How times have changed as Filipino and other programming have started to disappear. Five stars for being an understated legacy in mainstream media and popular culture within the Bay Area. read more

I have been a viewer of KTSF-TV's programming for years. I remember as a child in the late 1980s and early 1990s watching the weekly Friday night movie special. I would sit there in front of my grandfather's black and white television or turn dial (yes no remote!) color television and wait anxiously for the movie of the night. Back then, it was Sam Hui and company aka the Sam Hui brothers, Stephan Chow (God of Gamblers and later Shaolin Soccer), and "Happy Ghost" brought me tears and laughter. It was the prominent "golden" years of Hong Kong's movie industry and I got the best of it on public television. A staple of the KTSF programming is the nightly (M-F) Cantonese Evening news (broadcast at 7pm with a repeat at 12 midnight). They tend to cover Chinese/Asian American news that often the general media covered in a limited fashion (if at all). I owe my enhanced Cantonese vocabulary from this news broadcast. Several years ago, I fell in love watching Korean soap dramas subtitled in Chinese and dubbed into Chinese (Mandarin). Okay, I loved Harvard Love Story. Storyline good? Quite predictable Korean drama with the heroin, love struck gal, someone dying of something, and boy/girl drama. I must thank you for the Saturday special coverages too that has enhanced my knowledge of the early Chinese American community including specials on the history of early settlers from the Gold Rush and similar documentary style specials. I've also fallen in love with Taiwanese variety shows and singing shows on the weekends. The magicians on "Big Brother"/Da Ge Da is a bit cheezy and the girls are a bit tipsy minus the alcohol. However, I have nothing but love for showing me a window into Taiwan/Asian pop culture and watching cuties like Wang Lee Hom raise money on Taiwanese singing shows for children charity groups. Big pluses for special programming and coverage and all FREE and vastly available to the Chinese/Chinese American/Asian American community in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hope your programming continues to expands. read more

This television station has a variety of great programs including news from Tai wan that's great to watch. Other programming includes shows featuring local personalities, sporting events, world events and sites. Outstanding. Many times it is better to watch here than even the networks or public stations. read more

Poor programming station since 2002. KTSF was once a Cantonese ATV station and Mandarin drama series station at 8:00 and 9:00PM. When KPST 66 closed down, KTSF immediately got no competition and begin targeting Mandarin viewers of China. KTSF drop all Cantonese shows at 8:00PM and air Mandarin shows of China. They make Cantonese viewers under no choice to watch Mandarin series. They don't know the taste between Cantonese, Taiwanese and Republic of China difference. From what I know, the program department is run Francis and Ying Ying Chen, both Mandarin and from Republic of China. It was so sad to see KTSF ban all ATV series when there is no other station to compete. They just get cheap mandarin series from IAVC, ETTV and air them. I cannot believe KTSF want to use their 30 years on television power to lie they are getting 200,000 viewers each night. When there is another tv station (KCNS), the viewers for KTSF will never increase. It will stay the same or decrease. read more

For a top TV station like KTSF, they always believe "THEY ARE THE BEST". WRONG! Back in the 90s, KTSF was known as a commericial station airing only Cantonese series on M-TH. The station select movies on Friday from 9-11PM. They got the commercial ads and still air old movies from World Video. They rarely even select a movie from Taiseng Video which carry the best movies and cost the most. Well, KTSF has the cash, but don't want to spend it. In 1996, KTSF air a old New Years shows from and even try hide this was an old show. KTSF must be the only station not willing to spend money on Chinese New Year shows. Maybe, they don't care, being cheap or spend too much money on the news cast and new years parade sponsership. Since 2007, I notice KTSF value "RATINGS" and care about "RATINGS" when KCNS 38 Sino TV launch their station. Does this mean KTSF worry they will lose viewers from KCNS Sino TV? Just today, I found out KTSF expand their ratings info by releasing their top watch series in 2008. I email the station do they have or did they relesase the ratings to other shows which makes it the TOP 10, instead of TOP 5. I got a harsh reponse from a staff Patty Schneider@ktsf who claims to have the information. But, if they have it...it is proprietary information. "It was our intention to specifically publish the top five dramas of the2008. Thanks for your interest. I don't have a report on all dramas and, additionally, that is proprietary information." (Patty Schneider) This was just simple information like No 6, No 7, No 8 series is...... If they don't have it or don't want to give it out, then we all respect this. But what kind of attitude and strong words like "proprietary" is this. When a TV station is too long is business, people either watch it or leave in a good sense. I wonder is there ratings even accuate or possibly false. Advertisers should give other TV stations a chance. Not because KTSF has news new news, people just go to KTSF and put down others. read more
