Well, it appears that someone at KFSF reads my reviews. How reassuring. After my older review…read moreabout their GRIT TV station broadcasting 4:3 films as widescreen, leaving the image to look stretched and scrunched, someone went and fixed the problem (or so it would appear). My background; I worked in the local film and video industry from the late 80s up through the mid 90s as a camera operator, grip, stage manager, and a few other things. I was routinely around BETACam cameras, Arriflex and Panavision motion picture cameras, lights, stages and what not, so I have a kind of knowledge that I was able to apply here. And I'm glad the KFSF people read my review and listened. All the best. OLD REVIEW; The only reason this station gets 2 stars in stead of 4 or 5 is because during broadcasts that feature films shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio the station broadcasts those same films in widescreen. Which means you get this image that's been stretched showing squat characters and scenary. I tried emailing the station but it bounced, and I really don't feel like calling. KFSF needs to contact GRIT TV in Vallejo, and tell them to straighten out their act and double check that they're broadcasting films in the proper aspect ratio. Because otherwise it's highly annoying.

The subscription is free if you contribute to the annual campaign, but I'm happy to pay for it myself, as I won't give money to a faith community that often discriminates against special needs kids. I especially enjoy the columnists, the joke page in back, and a sometimes lively letters section that often confirms that 2 Jews often have 3 different opinions. The continuing debate over last year's Jewish Film Festival, the Rachel Corrie movie event, and the Federation and Community response has been especially invigorating. However, the J did somewhat fall off the free speech wagon when it supported the suppression of the Berkeley Daily Planet and one particularly thuggish element within our Community. At the same time, I look forward to every issue as various debates continue with great rigor - intellectual and not.

Rabid Bush-bashing alone does NOT make a good radio network - and this is coming from someone who is NOT a Republican, has never voted for Bush for anything, and fully disagrees with at least 50% of his policies. However, it would be nice to hear some rational thought processes with critical analysis, instead of a bunch of retread DJ's and comic hacks who are clearly afflicted with Bush Derangement Syndrome. I have heard more harsh, passionate, persuasive and well thought-out criticism of George Bush's policies on the local right-wing station KSFO than on any of AA's syndicated programs. If you truly want a radio station with reasonably intelligent, engaging hosts with a left-of-center, anti-Bush point of view, listen to KGO. Both left-of-center KGO and right-of-center KSFO are far better at providing hosts with intelligent, engaging opinions (Ray T. on KGO being a notable exception) than this sorry excuse for a commercial radio network in a major market.

Their format is very MTV short attention span style. They range from fun stuff like some guy's sneaker collection to content of a very serious nature like California's failed prison system for youth. It's definitely worth checking out, you can find out if you're cable or satellite offers it by going to their website and entering your ZIP. Their web site http://www.current.tv is also very cool providing a constantly changing schedule of their programming. I think they are off to a good start and may actually achieve their goal of changing the news is delivered. As a side note: A few months ago they closed off King St. in front of SBC Park and gave a free concert (promotion) MC'd by Mos Def with appearances from The Crown City Rockers, Talib Kwali and some others. It was really done quite well and there was a lot of energy behind all the performers.
