KRON 4 - Watching a live in studio newscast

I probably went for 10 years not watching or reading the news. This guy got stabbed - that lady had…read moreher kitty saved by firefighters. IDK there is a lot of stuff I don't want to know. You can watch Vice or Democracy Now... CNN. Drama TV. I suppose its most important that you realize its mostly for entertainment purposes. Too much bad news out there. I would recommend to read the good news.

KRON4 Ignored a Documented Story About Discrimination, Gatekeeping, Retaliation, and California's…read moreMental-Health Workforce I am giving KRON4 one star based on my direct experience with the station and its newsroom. I contacted KRON4 reporter Dan Kerman with a documented public-interest story involving alleged disability discrimination, LGBTQ discrimination, institutional gatekeeping, retaliation, higher education, professional licensing, and California's mental-health workforce. I provided enough information and supporting material for KRON4 to understand why I believed the matter had significance beyond one individual. I am intentionally not repeating the confidential details of that submission here. Those materials were provided to KRON4 for journalistic consideration, not public disclosure. I did not expect Dan Kerman to automatically take the story or agree with me. I expected basic professional courtesy. A simple response saying, "I received your information, but we are not pursuing the story," would have been enough. Instead, I experienced silence. That was particularly disappointing because Dan was someone I had known years ago through San Francisco's gay community and whose work I respected. Sharing a community connection does not obligate anyone to cover a story, but it made the dismissiveness especially disappointing. I expected professionalism, not preferential treatment. When I received no meaningful acknowledgment, I elevated the matter to KRON4 newsroom leadership. Again, I did not demand coverage. I asked for confirmation that the information had reached the appropriate editorial level and had been considered. Nearly three weeks passed without even that basic acknowledgment. At that point, the phrase "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" seemed appropriate. When essentially the same dismissiveness continued after I moved from an individual reporter to newsroom leadership, my concern stopped being about one person and began looking, in my experience, like a broader newsroom culture. That is difficult to reconcile with KRON4 calling itself "The Bay Area's Local News Station." A local newsroom depends on the public. Tips, witnesses, sources, and viewers all come from the community. When someone submits documented information involving discrimination, disability rights, LGBTQ issues, retaliation, professional gatekeeping, education, licensing, and the mental-health workforce, I believe the minimum professional response should be acknowledgment--even if the answer is no. What makes this more frustrating is KRON4's editorial choices. KRON4 has devoted newsroom space to what I consider stupid, bizarre, and insignificant stories: kittens trapped in pipes, a baby fox traveling inside a construction pipe, a fur seal found in bushes, a giant marmot appearing in San Francisco, a bologna-inspired face mask, and other "Strange" or viral stories. Some viewers may enjoy those stories. Fine. But I have every right to question the priorities of a news organization that can find time and resources for those stories while a documented matter involving discrimination, retaliation, LGBTQ concerns, disability access, higher education, professional licensing, and California's mental-health workforce cannot apparently merit even a two-sentence acknowledgment. Although I now live in Los Angeles, this was not simply a private Los Angeles matter. The issues involved California institutions, California licensing, discrimination, disability access, and the statewide mental-health workforce. KRON4 also shares its parent company, Nexstar Media Group, with Los Angeles station KTLA 5. California stories cross television-market boundaries all the time. Again, I was not demanding coverage. I was asking a professional newsroom to review serious information and communicate whether it had any interest. A respectful "no" would have been professional. Silence was not. At the time I checked Yelp, KRON4 showed approximately 2.3 stars across roughly 150 reviews. My one-star rating, however, is based on my own direct experience. My criticism is not that KRON4 refused to broadcast my story. My criticism is that after submitting serious, documented information and then elevating the matter within the newsroom, I could not obtain the most basic professional acknowledgment. Two sentences could have prevented this entire review: "Thank you for sending the materials. We reviewed them and have decided not to pursue the story." That would have been professional. Silence was not.

With the first televised game at the new Chase Center, NBC Bay Area Sports needs to up their game. Throughout the telecast, they actually think this pre-season game counts. The Warriors close a 20 something point deficit and they comment about a comeback? This duo sound like overzealous Little League T-Ball parents. Azubuike played four seasons with the Warriors (2006-10)? Can't recall him. Jim Barnett, the veteran announcer, is going to be moving over to the radio coverage. I'm going to turn off the TV sound and turn on the radio or watch on NBATV!

The way you frame a story can make all the difference - I knew a lot about the specific subject and could see immediately that there were missing pieces to the puzzle. The piece in question was three minutes and fifty six seconds. I dug like a gopher to see more about the same story. ABC 7 had a story that was eight minutes and nineteen seconds and was a great piece of investigative reporting. It went in depth and put forth facts - was less about coming to ridiculous conclusions without finding experts to talk of the subject first. I then researched the specific issues in question and got firsthand data on the event. Within ten minutes of my own investigation I saw how lots of facts were left out - facts that make the mysterious element of the story seem more clear. I usually find the news comical in how witnesses give their personal opinions of random events. Usually its a clear issue or event to speak of and for dramatic effect they show some witness that looks good on camera - but the piece I saw was so wrong - even if they had obvious time constraints in their length of the story. The piece NBC put forth was shameful. I believe it was successful in doing what it was designed to do - get attention.

I got to attend the KQED FEST of 2026. It was my first time visiting the headquarters, and the space was just dopamine inducing: open space, walls of windows, areas that just scream community cultivation. There is so much to do at KQED Fest, and this is a FREE event! There was a variety of spaces designed especially for creative kids: painting, playing, looking under microscopes. There were also a good offering for the adults: panels, presentations by NPR, and auditions for Check Please, Bay Area! And if none of that sounds interesting than feel free to take your pick of tours, a stage with local live music (by such greats as: Tiny Desk Concert winner Ruby Ibarra or the 2024 KQED Bay Area Showcase winner Misa James), bingo, and lots of great food and drinks. Of course, I grabbed a little KQED swag as a physical souvenir of the day. I'm hoping (make that manifesting) I'll attend a live taping of any of the wonderful shows filmed right there at the headquarters. Thank you for opening up this incredible space for the public to visit. Attending KQED Fest fulfilled a dream long in the making for me.

I watched KPIX Ch5 news in the evening of Dec 25…read more The heavy rain and strong winds made headlines, so I wanted to see the news reports. Darren Peck provides way too much detailed information. It's nice to know all that about weather tracking and new storms forming, but his report ran too long. I think his 2nd weather report was nearly 10-minutes in duration. Also, the way that he's walking across the map is annoying. Go back to just pointing, instead of standing on map. After about 25-mins, I switched to another station.

She is an anchor who makes you realize how much skill it takes to do live television really, really well. She is so articulate and quick on her feet. She's listening and processing in real time, and has organic follow-up questions - doesn't feel rigid and scripted. Her abilities are also especially noticeable during breaking news coverage and live interviews I've seen her do. She's genuinely engaged and pulls me in. She has presence, but she doesn't make the stories about herself. Also, her background is awesome! She is an SF State journalism grad who started at KPIX as a production assistant and worked her way up through newsrooms around the country before coming back to anchor in San Francisco. She's covered major events like Hurricane Harvey, the Dallas police shooting, and the San Bernardino terrorist attack. This is probably why when something unexpected happens on air she doesn't look rattled, always rolls with it. Thank you KPIX for supporting awesome, smart, confident, badass women with command at the anchor desk and in the community.
