I'm very pleased with Happy Campers Daycare. I think your child will be well taken care of there…read more My daughter is 21 months old and has been going to Happy Campers since she was 7 months old. I can not say enough good things about Gilda (Gigi), the woman who runs it, and her family, who assist. Here are some of the things I love about this daycare. ENVIRONMENT The space is clean and tidy every day. It looks recently redone. There is good lighting even on foggy days, and there is a safe backyard area for the kids to play in. There are plenty of toys to play with, but not so many that it gets cluttered and overwhelmed with mess. All the expected childproof devices are in place, and the entire daycare is 2 spacious rooms so it's easy to keep an eye on the kids. The neighborhood is also safe. ACTIVITIES During the day, the children play with toys and with each other. There are also books, music, and all kinds of learning disguised as play; at 21 months, our daughter can recognize and say basic colors, shapes, animals, numbers, and letters AND most amazing to me is that she has started singing a handful of songs including her ABCs! I know my husband and I can't take credit for all of that, and it must be that she's learning a lot at daycare. I also attribute my daughter's socialization skills to being around other children and having loving caregivers like Gilda and her husband. COMMUNICATION Gilda is always friendly and positive, and at the end of the day when we pick our daughter up, she takes care to let us know about what happened during the day. She accommodates our nitpicky requests to know how our girl ate, drank, slept, and pooped every day! She's also great about communicating via email and text. SCHEDULING AND HOURS Gilda has been very accommodating of our need for flexible scheduling; there were months when our daughter attended full-time and months when she's only gone 3 days a week, and Gilda has been very generous in working with that. Their hours are *extremely* flexible as well. I know some daycares expect you to be there the same time every day, or if you miss a dropoff time, you can't come again until the second dropoff time. With Happy Campers, there is the option of flexible dropoff times, which is great. She even babysits for us occasionally, and our girl loves having dinner with their family. FOOD Speaking of which, it's absolutely fantastic that they provide hot breakfast and lunch as well as morning and afternoon snack. Such a relief not having to pack anything. It's so good that we have to step up our culinary game at home to keep up with the excellent home-cooked food she receives at daycare! And when my baby was still drinking breastmilk and formula, Gilda was wonderful about making sure she drank as much as was necessary and offering formula if the baby was still hungry. HEALTH Healthwise, when my girl shows signs of teething pain or fever, Gilda has been sure to contact me to check what she should do, though I trust her implicitly if she can't get a hold of me. In addition, Happy Campers is a licensed daycare trained in first aid and CPR. CHILD-STAFF RATIO AND DISCIPLINE Currently, there are only a few children at the daycare, which I love, so the kids all get lots and lots of attention and love. While my daughter is younger and only starting to get time-outs, I have seen Gilda in action with an older child, and she handled the situation very well--she's loving but firm. I've seen her handle separation anxiety, and she always keeps her cool and gets the child to calm down. COST The best part is that Happy Campers is SO affordable. Really affordable, especially considering the great quality of care and Gilda's willingness to work with the family. As a footnote, while it's not necessarily a requirement for a successful daycare, I like that Gilda and her husband have 2 grown kids who seem happy and healthy, and one helps with the daycare. My daughter was loved by Gigi and her family and assistants throughout her time here -- Happy Campers was truly and extension of our family. About 2 years after I was diagnosed I got involved with the walk that was held at Heather Farms park. It was SO much fun! Great location, awesome walk, and awesome people! Now here comes the bad part. About a year ago they changed the location!! To the Oakland Zoo... At first I thought wow! that is going to be so much fun! EHHHH. BOY WAS I WRONG! I went last year and the walk was 1/2 A MILE!!! SERIOUSLY?! that is not a walk... AND, you have to AT LEAST raise $100 in order to walk in it....and for that $100 you get a crappy sandwich and a t shirt... wow. but the sandwich and tshirt i dont really care about..I care about having fun and raising awareness. I feel that this new location SUCKS and I'm not going to be involved anymore unless they go back to heather farms or at least some other location!

A few years ago, after trying to pack away and donate items that could no longer comfortably fit…read moreinto my apartment, I finally decided to let go of a few very well-maintained stuffed animals (less than 10 years old). It was bittersweet, but they were all packed away in a storage container in my closet, taking up space. Yet, childishly I was very heartbroken with the thought of throwing them away. I did a myriad of internet searches and was surprised that neither Goodwill nor the Salvation Army would accept gently used stuffed animals. It was then that I found Kendra and Project Night Night SF. What a wonderful idea! It was an easy process involving cleaning (washing) the items, packaging them and dropping them off. I was pleased that they were accepted and that they fit the criteria size-wize and condition wise. Plus, they would be used for gift baskets to comfort children who really need extra TLC. Sadly, I don't think that they accept used items any longer, but I'm not 100% certain. Plus, they provide you with a tax receipt if you would like to list as a deduction.

Project Night Night is my absolute FAVORITE organization. Every single person who works for PNN or…read morehas worked with them are incredibly friendly, outgoing, and knowledgeable and above all extremely committed to the cause. Anyone who has a child, or remembers their childhood knows how important having a special lovey is! We all had them, a blanket and stuffed animal, something that we just couldn't bear to part with, and still lives in that box on the closet shelf. Well, Project Night Night reaches out to those who need the comfort of their lovey the most. PNN is dedicated to promote the well being of children (and parents for that matter) who are in a transitional phase and experiencing something that the majority of us would never have to- life in a shelter. Through the distribution of "Night Night Packages" which include a blanket, a stuffie, and a book the organization is able to promote warm and fuzzy feelings in a not so ideal situation. Kendra, the executive director, is INCREDIBLE. Through a little thought and a lot of help she turned something that is an assumed given for children and created an organization that reaches out across the country bettering thousands of children's lives. Project Night Night collects donations of books, blankies, and stuffies throughout various locations in the city, so it's super easy to help out! Our 15 month old has been going to Karen's Daycare since he was just 5 months old. Karen and her…read morehusband Adam are just wonderful caring people and excellent with kids. All these months we have never seen our kid crying or fussy when we pick him up. On occasions he is having so much fun that he doesn't want to come home with us. They treat all kids with so much love and care, just like they would with their own kids, that we never have to worry about anything when we are at work. Also they are open through out the year with very few days off which is a huge help. I would highly recommend their services to anyone in this area.

Karen's daycare was an incredibly expensive mistake for me…read more My son started Karen's at 6 months at the end of my maternity leave. 2 weeks into his care here I knew this place was not going to work for me: -My child was placed in front of the television for most of his waking hours. This is my biggest complaint. He would watch cartoons, giants games, the evening news, and associated commercials. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests no screen time under two and I agree with them. -My child was placed in his crib with a blanket. The AAP recommends no blankets under the age of 12 months. -My child was never taken outside. -My child was feed foods that I did not provide. I make all of my family's meals from fresh organic ingredients and it broke my heart to find out he was being feed processed foods. When I would vocalize my frustrations, I was was told tv is educational and the other parent's don't mind "snack time." Karen and Adam really do love children and if you don't mind the things listed above then this can be a great center for you. They keep their rates low and are very flexible when it comes to hour of operations which is a valuable resource to families. However, watch out because enrolling at Karen's involves signing a ONE YEAR CONTRACT. When I finally found an alternative center to move my son to they threatened to sue me for the remaining year of service. They were willing to settle on three months tuition if I could get the cash to them in 24 hours. This was was an incredibly difficult time for my family so I urge every parent to think carefully if this kind of environment you want for your child.

It's clear Amy cares for each child deeply and I have full trust in her with our baby. We get daily report cards and lots of pictures. It's very frustrating when you just want to know what's going on with your child. The last time I was there I got there and my daughter had been sent home without my knowledge. It really bothered me and I told one of the lady's there. The next week at family court my ex tried to present a letter from TTT to the judge saying that I was "aggravated" when I was there last. I did not see the letter myself but my ex was trying to present it against me. Luckily the judge doesn't take into consideration what a babysitter has to say but I will never recommend a place that gets in the middle of custody disputes. It's none of their business.
