Chunky vanilla (sugar cookie pieces)
Lisa R.

After living around the corner for a few years from the Nebraska Dairy Store in Lincoln, I never took true advantage of what I could buy there. Now that the secret is out, Call Hall is where to go. Run by students, this place produces its own ice cream and dairy products, and sells meat and eggs among other fresh treats. I bought a "bucket" of quail eggs on the cheap. There are all sorts of meats here, including interesting cuts of lamb. However, the star of the show is the ice cream. There are lots of happy kids running around here because of it. There are usually at least 8 flavors available. Most recently I tried the chunky vanilla, which has crushed sugar cookies in the vanilla. This is a must-stop when in MHK and the prices are low. Support the students and leave with a smile on your face! There is free parking for dairy store visitors in the Call Hall lot.

2 Scoops, Butter Brickle & Butter Pecan ($3.93)

Since my cousin spent 10 months at Kansas State University for part of her vet school, we decided to go visit her at the school in Manhattan, Kansas. She took us to the KSU Dairy Bar/Call Hall since this is apparently a must try when you're in the area. KSU has an agricultural program, and some of the students help run this Dairy Bar. They have cows on campus, and they use the milk to make the ice cream they serve here, and also sell a variety of different dairy items, eggs, etc. We tried: -2 Scoops, Butter Brickle & Butter Pecan ($3.93, http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/ksu-dairy-bar-manhattan-2?select=L2Cas4acElwwZWzhQHHBhA#L2Cas4acElwwZWzhQHHBhA): One of my favorite ice cream flavors in the Central/Southern states is butter brickle, which has small pieces of toffee or something mixed in. This version was very creamy, which I liked, and their butter pecan was also very good. I would order both again, although I liked the butter brickle a little more. I also tried the Purple Pride (Blueberry) flavor, and that was very good as well- there was a lot of good blueberry flavor. Overall, I really enjoyed my visit to the KSU Dairy Bar, and would definitely come again if in the area. The students who work here are really nice. The line can get quite long on game days, so make sure you come early! Parking is easy since they have a big lot in front.

French almondine

Tried the French Almondine ice cream. Very creamy, not too sweet, great crunch. Just didn't blow me away like some other ice cream joints have. Yay for fresh milk though! Bonus: I ordered one scoop but got three small scoops in a waffle cone. Cone doesn't cost extra here, which is AWESOME!

Love Call Hall! The ice cream is scrumptious- well priced and it's for a good cause. I haven't had any of their food - just ice cream

I love K-State ice cream. They have a nice selection of flavors and some nice seasonal ones as well. I really enjoyed the peach ice cream.

Fun, tasty and rather inexpensive ice cream right on campus! Totally worth your time.

It's KSU ice cream! Fresh as can be and in the heart of the campus. Went here 30 plus years ago when in school.

As someone who's now graduated from KSU, I can definitely say this is one of the places I miss the most. The ice cream here is unreal.

Great place to shop for locally sourced beef! The employees are super nice and they give you free…read moresamples to try. A lot of the steaks are pretty pricey, but their chuck roast is very good value (3 ish pounds ranges from 25-45 dollars depending on fat content). You can definitely taste the difference in the meat quality.

I had no idea there is a local wagyu shop in town! Last night Eric R. and I attended a HYPE event…read morehere for a wagyu tasting. Our host Tyler shared the history of wagyu beef in Japan, how it made its way to the U.S., and what is different between the two countries in production. Booth Creek's ranch is located just 20 miles away, so the cattle are raised locally. Marbling content is verified for each cow by a lab in Japan! There are three levels of marbling (silver10-15%, gold 16-25%, platinum 25%+). This is not a quality indicator but is along the lines of USDA's select, choice, prime (though the fat content in wagyu is much higher). The store has frozen cases divided by these levels, as well as a frozen bargain bin (20% off) and fresh cases in the middle of the store. The tasting began with beef charcuterie boards: jerky, jalapeno cheese snack sticks, and summer sausage with some cheeses. Then we were served wagyu meatballs cooked in Cox's BBQ sauce and honey from Booth Creek. The second course was a picanha roast, smoked and sliced like a prime rib. It was really close to the prime rib flavor and texture, but at a much better price point. Lastly, Tyler brought out KC strip steaks (platinum level, seasoned with salt and pepper only) that were sous vide at 127 degrees, and seared them on a flat top in beef tallow. After he let them rest for five minutes, he sliced them and we got to try them. They were incredibly juicy and tender, seasoned well. It makes me consider the sous vide method at home though I do not have the tools right now. They offered some bundles and discounts as they kept the shop open late for us. We ended up buying gold label fajita meat and filet mignon steaks plus a bargain bin silver label filet tips. I cannot believe I have access to locally raised quality wagyu beef here in Manhattan! Beef is definitely what I had for dinner last night!
