I've been shopping here since they first opened. Yes, a few years ago they expanded but I don't think it did much good. It did give the store more space for organic & healthier food but there isn't that much more organic food than there was. There are now 6 more u-scan tellers. It still is true that there are carts all over the parking lot. Perhaps if employees didn't allow them to sit by the sidewalk, people couldn't run off with them as easily. However, there are a lot of really nasty employees who ignore you when you ask them a question. Then there are the REALLY rude ones. One night, I went in there & asked a stock guy in the coffee aisle if they carried a brand of coffee. He looked at me like I was crazy & said, "How the hell should I know? Don't you? You should! You're here every single day!" They have a water island with distilled water right next to the organic food. However, the average cashier doesn't seem to be aware of that. When I go to the checkout, half of the time, they accuse me of tearing off the label of one from the water aisle. So I explain that I brought it from home & tore the label off so that they can't scan it. Then there's the u-scan attendants. The line actually moves pretty quickly because they have 6 machines. But if the attendants can't handle all the tasks at once, maybe they should have 2 attendants. Many times, I stood there with my water refill, & getting ignored. One time was with Kristie. She completely ignored me. She eventually said, "Ma'am!! There are people behind you! You're going to pay & leave!" I told her that I'd been waiting 5 minutes and clicked "call attendant." She said, "That doesn't work. I thought you were just thinking." OK. So I was just standing there for 5 minutes, staring at you, with my water jug in my hand, occasionally looking at my watch but the entire time, I was just thinking? And if they don't work, why doesn't the manager fix them or just remove the "call attendant" feature altogether?? Then she had the audacity to scream at me & say, "Don't you talk to me like that! I'm not your child!" Well then, don't ignore me for 5 entire minutes while I stare at you while holding my water bottle & if you don't want people screaming at you, then don't scream at them first. Then the security guards. Oh my! They have, I think one nice one, who I haven't seen in a while. There is a younger, black girl as a security guard who I always smile at her & say hi when I pass by. She always gives me a dirty look, as if I have no business speaking to her. One night, they were closing soon & there were about 4 or 5 of us at the u-scans. There was this lady next to me & two waiting. The other 4 had been turned off. This security guard comes along & yells at this girl, "Move it along! You're not bagging fast enough!" I couldn't believe my ears! I'll never forget it. The girl was obviously upset, & started throwing her products in said, "I'm sorry!" So I just decided to get there earlier. Three months ago, a security guard stopped me when my vitamins set off the security alarm. He kept asking me the same question, "Did you buy something just now?" I said yes, "Do you want to look in my bag?" Again, asks the same question. I show him my my receipt. Again, asks the same question. He asked me this same question about 10 times. After I took out each item & found that it was the vitamins, I said, "Can I go now?" He laughed & said, "Yeah. I wouldn't have given you a hard time if they were in a Kroger bag." It was so aweful, I still cannot forget this. I decided I'll make sure the cashier deactivates the security sticker on vitamins & basically the store is OK & only 1/4 miles away. 2 months ago, as I was about to walk out, the security guard asked to see my receipt & for me to empty my bags. Everything in my bags was on my receipt. So he let me go. He said someone told him that I put something in my bag while shopping, which which I never do. I reported this & they said they had the wrong person. I thought, "If I keep getting stopped by security for something I'm not doing, I'm going to stop going there." I thought, "Just one more time." I never get accused at other stores. For a while, things were fine until 2 days ago. I went to the u-scan & I decided I didn't want something. After paying, I walked up to the attendant to hand it to her. She ignored me & kept chitchatting. I walked away & put it in the cart with the other returns. As I was walking out, the security guard confronts me & says he needs to see my receipt. Again, someone told him I took something & put it in my bag. Well now! That's 3 strikes & you're out! I'm sick of this store. I've decided it really IS worth taking a bus to Western Market & Holiday Market instead of just walking a few streets. Don't go unless you must & definitely don't use their u-scans since they have there returns right there & you'll probably get accused of pocketing something. I give them 1 star since they actually have food. read more

This Kroger has recently been renovated to look similar to other newer Krogers... and while that is an upgrade from the way this location used to look--- it wasn't quite enough. This is the closest Kroger to my house- and so we probably stop in here more than we wish we did. Prices are higher than they need to be, expired products aren't always taken off the shelf in a timely manner, some stankness lingering in the air from time to time, and usually long lines at checkout. The only positive I will give this Kroger is the lady whose job it is to run their little floral dept. She's fantastic. read more

All the negative reviews on here are true! There are almost always 0 carts in the store, they're all out in the parking lot. No matter how many employees are in the store just hanging out. I'm writing this review because of the boxes and boxes of strawberries that had rotten, white and green mold growing inside. How disgusting! And they left piles of black, obviously old, shriveled, avocados out. I will never shop here again just because of this. Can you imagine the freshness of the rest of the food?! How disgusting! And I tried to chat with the cashier and she said not one word to me, she just looked at the bagger like, "Does this B think I'm going to acknowledge her?" And he just looked back at her like, "Ha! No, we aren't acknowledging her at all." No hello, no thank you. And my god, can the people who work there try not to have and irritated, bored look on their face?! And the people working the customer service counter? They are the rudest of the bunch. No greeting, no smile, and even ruder than the cashiers. They need to fire all the lazy, non customer service knowing, non hard working zombies here and find people who like their job and can do it well. Or, they need a new store manager that knows how to manage their employees. How are all these bad reviews still true? Even as far back as 2010?! I cannot believe how ridiculously bad this branch of Kroger is. Shame on Kroger for allowing this location to continue being so bad! read more

This is likely the dirtiest Kroger in existence. The people that work there are either unapproachable or extremely friendly, no in between, it is 50/50. You never know if you're going to be ignored by the guy you ask to help you find the cereal isle or befriended by one of the kind cashiers because your buying the same Oreos variety she just served at her mother in laws retirement party. This roll of the dice is experienced with their products too. Cross your fingers, count your blessings, take your penicillin and choose very judiciously, least you may receive something as expired as a 2016 Democratic presidential campaign. Hazel Park isn't exactly the upper east side of suburban suburbs BUT it is on the upswing and it needs a neighborhood grocer to match this trend! This is not that store. Two stars instead of one because of the friendly cashiers. Peace. read more

They redid this one so there's security, new floors, new organic section..... 35 min just to buy 4 items.. I'm sure we can do better.... I would 10 min tops would be acceptable

This is the most horribly run grocery store I've ever been to. They NEVER have enough employees. I stupidly enter this store repeatedly, only to make it the other side, and see lines to the back of the store. There was one lane open at 7:30 at night. This is never acceptable, and has happened on several different occasions. Get it together! read more

Krogers on John R is the worst in customer service. No registers open on s Sunday maybe 2.at most all u scans are closed except for a few open. Lines long with people who have 200. Dollar orders. Because of this I left without my groceries again. Customer service or anyone else obviously do not care. When s customer walks out. With out their items the store loses money. I will be back when the manager is there and complain directly This has happened quite a few times. I walked out leaving my groceries again read more

Living in Ferndale, we have a lack of large grocery stores so this seemed like a good option. I was wrong. The clientele here is super trashy. Lots of drunks and homeless begging. Management should at least do something about the begging... The store just feels really dingy and dirty and lots of items are out. I was charged for several items which I later found were put in the wrong customers basket! Next time I want to loose $40 I will go to the casino. Two bottles of wine, some meat and frozen food all charged for but I didn't get. Needless to say it is worth the drive to a different Kroger or even paying a little more somewhere nicer. read more

This Kroger seems to never have any carts or baskets up front. There's carts in the parking lot or abandoned in aisles, however. This was an issue prior to COViD as well. Bring your own bag or be prepared to carry all your groceries in your hands. read more

Cons: When you call and ask to speak to a store manager a person gets on the phone and lies and says he is a store manager. His name was Jarell and he was not a store manager. When you go into the store to ask for a store a manger and finally get one, he (Fred) barely listens to your concern and brushes you off. Then tells you to just switch the expired food with something else. Several items are expired almost a shelf full of Stonyfield organic yogurt that dates back to 10-20-16 and today is 11-15-16. That is almost a month. Pros: None If I could give ZERO stars I would. read more

During my latest outing I was looking to buy a half dozen eggs, 7 containers were left in the case. No joke 6 of 7 had cracked eggs, two with multiples. Today was mostly a typical experience at this Kroger like the hundred I've had before it. This Kroger usually has the basics that I need and is fairly efficient. However, I usually find they are out of popular items (example: Not Your Father's Rootbeer). I did get a bit frustrated at times today however, because items that I don't frequently get - but I know are generally stocked - were hard to find and/or completely out. A lot of the shelves were disorganized; it was hard to determine the prices of items and/or prices/names were not displayed correctly. Despite that, staff was friendly and personable. read more

I agree with Ashley M. - I typically expect to see a decent amount of strange people wandering around when I visit. There are days when it's so crazy in there, I will immediately turn on my heel and walk out. ________________________________________________________ I just upgraded this Kroger from one to two stars - not because of the store itself but an experience I just had with customers that made me feel warm and fuzzy all over... I was in a hurry and I had only 3 items to purchase. The lines were crazy long. I was attempting to find the end of the "15 items or less" line which was drifting back into the aisles. Halfway into my inquiry, someone far up at the front offered to let me move in front of her. I told her "No, I don't want to take cuts in front of all these people." That's when everyone else in the line urged me/gave me permission to move in front of them. People kept moving me up in the line until I was the very next one to visit the cashier. Sometimes humans can be kind. Thank you, those of said line! I got 30 minutes of my life back. read more

Had to stop here for a liquor run for a guys party on the way to Detroit. First time I'd gotten off of 75 in Hazel Park. Couldn't really take in the sights as it was 9:30 in the evening. Pretty standard Kroger in many senses. I don't recall security guards in both Krogers in Troy but I guess since this is more of an inner city suburb than Troy, it's more susceptible to any kind of criminal activity. I'm not really an alcoholic so I'm not sure if all Krogers don't house hard liquor but this ones doesn't. Only beer and wine. As usual, Kroger has all kinds of goodies on sale or very good prices. This location didn't have too many people on a Saturday evening and people available was minimal. Can't really comment on the service but generally, people were friendly. All in all, standard grocery store that has most essentials. read more

The outside of Kroger is very dirty garbage everywhere. I parked and I guess there was a dirty diaper on the floor. Gross. There is never any shopping carts! I hate it here. The prices are higher than meijer and so is the selection. Sometimes you will go in and all the fruit is horrible or they are straight up out. It is very frequently full so you might have to wait. read more

This place is a literal garbage dump and needs remedial action. Found vermin in a sealed bag of Kroger rice. Vomit on the curb at the entrance on another occasion. A friend just posted a picture of underwear in the parking lot....it goes on like this. There appears to be poor management and a totally classless and oblivious clientele. However, you can get manager's special chips a lot since no one uses the organic or health food section here. read more

I can't believe how petty some people are about this Kroger. They just dropped $6 million on renovating, expanding, and updating everything, and you're all whining about the parking lot??? smh. Some people are never happy...prefer to be miserable. Anyway, I think the changes are good. I prefer this location, not just because it's a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from my house, but also because they are overall cleaner, more stocked, and have nicer (less rude/snobby) staff than let's say "other" locations (Birmingham, Troy). They're not Nino Salvaggio's, but they are great for what my family needs and are good for the area we live in. I've never had any issue with the staff, prices, selection, or stock. My only complaint is that the bathrooms are still nasty. I prefer to take my kids home rather than use them. Updating them means nothing if the staff still won't clean them daily (technically, they should be checked multiple times a day). PS: I can't believe that one of the survey questions is "PokeStop Nearby".....HA! read more

All the bad reviews are so laughable, it is Kroger, not a trader Joe's or whole foods. They have food, good prices, not the cleanest parking lot but the inside is fine. I mean what more do you want? Seeing as I moved within 1/4 mile of this store, I have been there a few times to get a few things. It is absolutely disgusting! It's so dirty inside, and they stock expired products (I purchased a bottle of salad dressing that expired a full year prior!). Kroger in general is so expensive so I try to avoid it at all costs, but considering the filth in this location, it's the worst that I've ever been to. It also says something about the people that shop there when they have uniformed security at the front doors of a grocery store! Avoid it at all costs, drive an extra few miles to go to a nicer store. read more

Decided to drive from Birmingham to the Kroger, on John R, Hazel Park, to buy Breyer's Fat Free "Chocolate" ice cream, the only store in the area to carry it. What a great surprise, Michael helped me at the "self check-out," and the store was clean, had plenty of cashiers (and baggers) as it was almost rush-hour/dinner-hour shopping. Forget Birmingham Kroger (Maple and Woodward) as they haven't had my business in a long time (produce is terrible, cashiers are not helpful, and the employees are always complaining). Kroger Hazel Park will get all my business from now on!!!! Thanks Michael, for making my day! read more

What can you say about this kroger that hasn't already been said about using the pull out method for birth control. Yeah, you've done it a few times but after seeing a dirty as$ baby in the corner you quickly learn you're lesson. And this place is crawling with dirty babies and adults. My last visit I saw a 35 year old grandmother chasing around her granddaughter. (Stop, do the math....ok). I always feel overdressed when I'm there because everyone is walking around in their pajamas like its a bad zombie movie. I only go there if I'm coming from that direction and need to stop for something small. I once saw woman inside wearing a handkerchief size piece of an American flag as a shirt. Take that Taliban!!! Avoid at all costs. Well unless you are in a people watching mood. read more

Ferndale, southern Royal Oak, and Pleasant Ridge form a relative supermarket Bermuda Triangle. While Holiday Market and Western Market cater to upscale or specialty consumers, residents of our beloved corner of southeast Michigan are sorely deprived for a quality mainstream grocery store. The Krogers on 8 Mile, 13.5 Mile, and 9 Mile/John R do not count as acceptable for the residents. With Meijer opening up at the State Fair grounds, this situation may change in the future. We can still wish the property next to Emagine Royal Oak will be transformed into a Whole Foods or a sparkling new chain with decent prices. Why anyone continues to shop at Kroger would be a mystery to me other than the fact we have no other real alternative for a three mile radius if you want a quick stop for the basics like a half-gallon of milk, a dozen jumbo eggs, and margarine. This shop is an absolute dump. From the exterior it appears like a vaguely reasonable store with a somewhat fresh frontage. Scratch deeper to see the real story underneath the slop of some paint. Dinged carts litter the front of the store and the parking lot is a mess. Shabby produce at jaw-dropping high prices fills baskets and sparsely covers the display tables. It's not the wake of a super sale or BOGO on strawberries; they just seem to constantly find the bottom of the crate fruit and make a half-hearted effort to put out bruised apples, blighted tomatoes, and field-tumbled carrots or potatoes. I understand that 'beautiful' fruit and vegetables contributes to a lot of food waste because, as a culture, we want the perfect green apple or red tomato or uniformly orange carrot. But I'm talking about damaged produce or stuff already gone to rot because of lack of care from employees responsible for these sections. Berries fuzzy with mold caught me off-guard and forced me to check everything from bags of salad to pumpkins I considered purchasing here. Others may not have time to be so thorough and I hate to think of money gone to waste on spoiled food that should've been composted and pulled from the shelves. I don't trust anything in the meat or dairy cases without direct examination. Check expiration dates, don't trust the labels without a sniff or visual test, and when in doubt, put it back. Too many yoghurts were expired that week on a shelf when I checked for Dannon, I saw milk mixed in with different dates that wouldn't fly if employees were being tasked for vigilance. Keeping expired content out of consumers' hands is a basic function for a grocer. The store is filthy. Carts and feet trek dirt from the parking lot over the linoleum floors, and construction made it worse. Bad lighting doesn't help. The frozen section is problematic with many doors fogged up so you cannot see the product, or they do not close properly in some instances (due to misuse or vandalism?) so there's a chance what you're buying has gone through the freeze-thaw cycle. I pointed this out at one point to an employee and he shrugged at me and said he'd tell a manager. There's something a bit sparse and cluttered about the frozen section shelves. Kroger charges higher prices than average though you can recoup some savings with their card. I don't buy essentials unless they are on sale, in which case stocking up is a wiser course. Sale items get moved off the shelves quick, especially for non-perishable items. Commercial pressures for certain items may justify the higher price, but the markup on standards seems to be 25%. Bread that's $2.19 at Target and $1.99 at Meijer shows up for $2.99. I gave the store three chances at different times of the year and had serious problems with it each time. I gave up mid-way through 2012. read more

I have read the other reviews and I agree with them. They all have the same reason for what makes the store have poor ratings. They won't come out and say it, but I will. It's the people they hire whom cause the place to go down hill. Its the same thing that happened when there was a brand new grocery store built on Woodward at the old Ford Motors site in Highland Park. They hired locals and the place turned into a wasteland shortly afterwards. The store went out of business and changed owners to a non-franchise store. Maybe they need to raise their wages and hire better help. read more
