I would honestly give this place 5 starts, not because it's great in everyday, but it shows that we need more REAL community focused spaces in our world. The Pro: They have three wonderfully built rinks, of course the Kraken use this space for their practice games, rehab, and other uses. If you look at the calendar, it's full of local teams, hobbyists, figure skaters and free skates for the general public. It's meant to be modern, maybe too modern but with a Starbucks on-site, you are guaranteed solid coffee. The place has decent spaces for people to hang out, and get their skates on. Cons: It's expensive AF. Honestly why? If it's named "Community"... make it something everyone in the community can take part in. read more

I want to give this place 5 stars but each time I go it gets more and more dirty. There's popcorn everywhere. The bathrooms are dirty and smelly. The shoes are still warm from the last skate session. They are selling out skate sessions with 300 people paying 20 bucks and multiple times a day but don't have money for more staff and daytime / evening cleaning staff? It's so disappointing. I love when my boy has his hockey games here. The atmosphere at the Ice Plex is always buzzing with energy and packed with friendly faces. He's on a local 18U team now, so the excitement has only grown. You can feel it from the players and the parents. The facility is great, and the parking is never an issue. Tons of solid food options just outside the complex, and only a hop, skip, and a slap shot is Seattle Marketplace! Still working on crossing a Kraken game off the ol' bucket list, but who knows? Maybe one day I'll be watching my son suit up for them. Until then, I'll stay loud in the stands, reppin' the sport every step of the way. Now, just one small (but real) suggestion... Some of us hockey parents are hanging in there for those super late night games. I'm talkin' 11:00 PM or later. And once the shops inside the complex shut down, the hallways DARK. It can feel a little unsettling walking to the restroom, upstairs to wait comfortably, or out to your car in complete darkness. Not all of us are lucky enough to be carrying a hockey stick for protection in case something weird goes down. Just sayin'... a little extra lighting after hours would go a long way. And for those new to the Ice Plex. I say this half jokingly (I think?), travel in pairs. If you accidentally step outside the wrong door after hours, you're locked out! Your fate lies in the hands of some kind soul on the inside who sees you and lets you back in. Don't ask me how I know. LOL. Overall though? This place is a gem. We decided to take the kids ice skating for the first time and chose Kraken Iceplex after some research. I wasn't disappointed! The online registration process was simple, and the rental skates were decent. It was a bit crowded, but that was expected since it was Valentine's Day. If I could, I would give -1000000000 stars. I tried to go to public skate, but got 100% of pain and frustration. It is just unusable rink It is overcrowded kill rink. Someone WILL get hurt sooner or later. If you dont know how to skate - then you'll suffer because you don't feel safe here (because of ton of people, not because of covid) and you won't learn ANYTHING If you just learning - then you'll suffer because you are scared to continue learning. Since you are afraid to hurt someone. Again - you won't learn anything new If you know how to skate - you'll suffer because you cannot skate in this hell. Everyone skates very very slow. You can't do anything else besides skating with same speed and being afraid that someone will drop just before you. In any case, you'll be suffering, afraid and frustrated. No joy. Only pain. Oh, almost forget. If you bought ticket - it doesn't matter. You still need to wait in a gigantic line. There is almost no space to wear your skates. And even if you manage to find some spot, people will go besides you, around couple inches between you and others. The most facepalming part was after 1 hour. Some guy was staying near the exit and was telling people to exit so they can renew the ice. They even don't have/use megaphone ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍ What if they need to make some announcement and make people exit fast due to emergency? Again, it is not safe. I guess, who cares. read more

With two kids into hockey, I was very excited to learn that Kraken Community Iceplex was built at Northgate Mall. Because it just started from this fall and no kids over 12 playing hockey at this location, we rarely had a chance to visit it. Finally, one of my kids was going to serve as a referee at a game here, so I found a good excuse to come to check it out. First, the parking area was a mess. It was confusing. The layout made me feel that I was driving at a construction site with many dangerous curves. I hope it was just temporary due to unfinished construction work. Second, once we entered the building, I was surprised to see the crowds, especially during this so called COVID-19 pandemic. Although the building was nice and new, inside was a mess. It seems that nobody was working on the maintenance work. The signs were not clear, so it took us a while to figure out where we should ask about the locker rooms. There's only one counter that serves all, from admission tickets, concessions, to skate rentals. There was a super long wait line. Since the game time was starting soon, we just cut the line to ask for the locker room. The locker rooms for the referees were nice. Each referee got an individual locker to put all the belongings. There is also a safe box on each locker for valuable things, but we couldn't figure out how to get it open. There's no instruction. There are three ice sheets. Our game was on Starbucks rink. On the way from the referee locker room to the rink, the floor was not completely covered with rubber tiles, so skaters have to pay extra attention to make sure not to step on the concrete to ruin the blades. I think a nice skating facility like this should have paid more attention on such a detail. I also visited the restrooms. While I could see everything was brand new, it's very dirty. I wonder if there's any cleaning crew doing the job. There is also a Seattle Kraken Team Store where you can buy Kraken products. Very nice! Overall, it's a nice facility since it's so new, but the poor maintenance could possibly destroy it very soon... read more

I didn't know about the Iceplex until I went to the holiday party for the company I work at. The building looks pristine and it was a nice place to hang out. I really enjoyed skating around for a few hours. I also liked that they offered ice hockey and curling stations on the rink next to the skating rink so you could try something new. There is a Starbucks upstairs and I was surprised to find out that they offered samples of pastries - I haven't seen samples given out at Starbucks in years, maybe never. There is a merch store near Starbucks for the Kraken team and it was interesting to see all the items. read more

My friends and I had a fun time ice skating here, however, our experience was seriously tainted by a person at the front desk checking in customers by the name "Laurentine" (according to the name badge). We each got individually checked in by her and each of us came back to each other having our own version of a "what the hell is wrong with that girl" story; did not say a single word by manner of greeting to any of us, and then gave us the rudest tone when finally deciding to give us instructions to show her the QR code for check in. After that not another word besides a soulless, snide stare devoid of any kindness. This is not the type of person that should be assisting customers in a front facing position. Brought my daughter here for ice skating for the first time, and she loved it. The only down side of this place it might get really packed so for a first time ice skater and as a kid I was a little worried, but most people who was skating fast is more pro at it so they have their controls. This review is for stick and puck. I love the rink itself but DO NOT go to stick and puck in late afternoon during week days if you're an adult. There are unaccompanied minors in the locker rooms, which is a MAJOR violation of Safe Sport. Also, the Jr Kraken run small group skills and drills taking up huge chunks of the ice, which isn't allowed according to the website. I told a rink employee about both these issues and she just kinda shrugged and was like "ya this happens. My manager even tried to say something but it keeps happening." What!!? Kick them off the ice. Period. Make sure minors have an adult with them or give them a separate locker room. I expect better. read more

We were visiting from out of town and were looking for something to do on a rainy day with our three year old. A friend recommended this place and I'm so glad we went. We went during open skate hours on a Wednesday and there were maybe twenty people on the ice, so lots of room for everyone. We got my daughter a skate aid (the seal they ride on) and she loved it. We stayed for the whole open skate session. The facility is clean and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. read more

I was super excited to visit the new iceplex with my husband and son! We loved people watching with our starbucks, browsing the store (got a Kraken jersey for my toddler) and just walking around. Ok after being here several times now I have to modify my thoughts a little. The locker rooms are bad! They connect bathrooms with others so it is really awkward when they place a mens adult team across from a teenage girls team. Or some locker rooms don't even have bathrooms. They only have 2 places in entire rink to fill water bottles and both are far from the ice or lockers. Wanted to love this rink because it's new and Seattle is lacking in sheets of ice. But as for the overall experience, it needs some serious work. Here are the issue that need to be fixed: 1) It is way overcrowded. Every rink I've ever been to had a limit on the number of people that can skate in to keep it safe and enjoyable for everyone. I can assure you iceplex does not have a limit, and it is a major issue. I counted over 250 people in the rink while I was there on Sunday afternoon- that's insane. Newbie skaters running into each other, no place to sit to put on skates, ice chunked up to hell, and overall not as enjoyable as it could be. 2) The "ice-world.com" plastic seals are a major hazard. The idea is for the tiniest of kids to ride the seal while a parent pushes them along (this is alongside the little scooters which are not an issue at all.) Unfortunately that is not the result. I saw about 12 of them on the rink at once and they take up much more space than a normal skater- many of them abandoned and sitting in the middle of the skating area. Kids were dragging them around, parents were aggressively pushing them past people, and older kids were riding them and tripping other skaters because their feet dragged off the sides. More importantly, I witnessed a parent with their kid on a seal run into a poor fellow and break his ankle! Unfortunately he was so badly hurt he had to be taken away on an ambulance. Poor dude. I wasn't surprised one bit- those plastic seals are a huge hazard. 3) Trash everywhere. The iceplex needs to hire some cleaning staff. For a new ice rink- the trash and litter everywhere was an eyesore :( I love ice skating and I've been wanting a solid ice rink near me for the longest time, but until they solve the overcrowding and seal issue, I can't return. Lest I be the poor dude with a several thousand dollar hospital bill after just wanting to glide on some ice for an hour. read more

I wrote about my experience with the iceplex public skate for a marketing class and figured it would be useful here. They're very much capitalizing on being the closest ice rink in Seattle and carrying the Kraken name (though that does not seem to be an important buying factor in public skating). I agree with other reviews that, aligned with what I discuss below, the upkeep is poor, the staff off-putting, and the layout confusing and possibly dangerous especially compared to the price. I visited the iceplex twice before purchasing the 10-pack package because I experienced cognitive dissonance when the staff did not initiate conversation or provide information beyond what was directly asked. I had to hesitate by the desk for quite some time making nervous eye contact before I approached someone as no one approached me though clearly signaling in a small space and new environment that I was unsure. This avoidance progressed as I attempted to get my skates sharpened. The company could improve visual signaling in the physical location to reduce the cognitive dissonance I experienced. The Kraken Iceplex website was very informative and I had hoped the physical location would be as easy and informative to navigate. The location appears to be best set up for regular customers such as club and school hockey players. I would recommend focusing on streamlining the public skate process as this regular event brings in the least knowledgeable customers. On the front desk there is a sign with a QR code for making an account which is necessary for any purchase. This sign would be better placed at the beginning of the ropes forming a line to the front desk so customers can make an account while waiting to be helped instead of waiting in line only to be sent to the back of the line. A clear title on the sign would be significantly helpful, perhaps stating, "First time purchase? Will need an account. Scan below." This way, when new customers come in, the first step to take is clear and saves the staff the effort of consistently redirecting guests. Based on another complaint and the feasibility based on my first visit, having two lines for registered or prepaid guests and people who still need to pay would also streamline the check in process immensely. Another issue was that, at the front desk with 5 identical stations, the first is a manager who is working on other tasks and is not there to assist guests. This is not visually clear and is met with body language or tone intended to dissuade conversation. A sign in front of the computer saying "Next representative available" with an arrow pointing to the next station would be of great value to all parties involved. Another possible solution would be moving the manager's station to the adjacent wall so they are not customer facing. I am unaware of other constraints that may not make that possible. A similar divide and conquer approach applied to the line issue would be beneficial to the skate rentals as well. The line for getting skates is immediately next to the exit for the front desk, leading to further guest confusion and a bottleneck during busy check in periods. Perhaps if the lines were formed perpendicular to the front desk with a decent gap (as an exit) in between as opposed to parallel, the layout would be visually more inferable. These suggestions could improve streamlining guest experience as well as relieving the staff of tiring repetition. Overall, there is great opportunity for improvement via influencing buyers in the variable aspects of physical layout of the front desk at the Iceplex. read more

This is one of my favorite ice-skating rinks I have ever been to. for the public skating, I highly recommend booking online to save 5%. It's only $16 to skate, and an additional $5 to rent skates. Public skating during the holidays was around one hour and 45 minutes. What I love the most about this ice rink was how organized it was. It is extremely family friendly and the Zamboni cleans the ice in the middle of public skate, which was a very nice surprise because the ice rinks in California rarely do that in the middle of a session. There were several kids using the rental seals to help them, skate and stabilize on the ice. It also looks really fun for the kids when their parents would push them while they sat on the seal. During the holidays, I recommend coming early in the morning or early afternoon and avoid the evenings because of the crowds. There's free parking with the code: Kraken. Enjoy! read more

Rink 3 has lots of public drop-in time, perfect for a buzz-by. It was perfect for us. The folks at the counter were helpful and upbeat, and helped us exchange skates out until we landed on the right size with no sass. We will definitely return another day. read more

They really need to figure out how to handle public skate. I arrived at 3:55 for my 4-6pm skate. Upon arriving, I noticed a snaking line inside the building that I had to wait in. Even though I pre purchased my ticket and skates, I still had to wait in the line. The wait took 40 min and I lost that skating time since it closed at 6pm. They should be offering vouchers if you have to miss almost half of the time you're allotted. It's a nice facility and the skates were brand new and seemed clean, but I am not coming back here. read more

Went to open skate and cannot believe how many people were there. Maybe 300 people. If you're a beginner, this is not the place to learn. Whoever is in charge is clueless as to how to run a business in seattle. No room for trucks, no loading dock, useless staff had no idea what to do when delivery service shows up with merchandise for the facility. So fun! Although some free skates may be crowded, that's only the ones on the weekend and in the middle of the day. I recommend going to the ones from 6-830, because they are way less crowded, and a lot of the people there are more experienced. Also, my kids take lessons here on Saturdays, and love them. They won't refund you or credit you in any way if you don't want to wait in the line and lose 30 minutes of your ice time. People at the front desk all said different things. I wanted to like it but they just don't seem to have it together. Parking is oddly located and not all that easy to find. Then once you get inside get ready to wait. Even if you buy tickets online and fill out the waiver you wait and wait and wait. Took us nearly 45 minutes just to show we had already paid and get skates. They are clearly understaffed and don't know how to manage a small crowd. Announcements on the ice are impossible to understand. Don't expect to eat at the bar without - you guessed it - a wait. I could go along with all the disorganization if it weren't for the price. You pay 3x the price of other rinks in the area and expect to get only about 45 minutes of CROWDED ice time for your 2 hour session. When I asked a staffer about extending our session to the next one given the wait times he rudely told me that we needed to pay. So I spend another $45 for two young kids, have to remind him I also ordered a water in addition to another session and skate rentals. After paying and the credit card machine clearly stating the charge was approved he tried to tell me it didn't go through and that he was going to charge it again. I told him the charge had gone through and he decided to agree, no idea what changed his mind. I checked online and it had gone through. As we walk away he tells me about how all these annoying parts of a visit don't matter because people pay for the Kraken name. Seems they are after the "tourist trap" experience. read more
