The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now!

I like the fact that Square Stores sticks to their roots but also follows the times and carry brands like Levi's jeans, Timberland boots and always the sporty urban Carhartt clothing line. Sadly, I live in Los Angeles now but it's always a trip to memory lane when I'm back here! Howie is the owner whom I remember way back when his dad ran the store.
