I think part of the joy for them came because of the beginning sense of accomplishment that the program/teacher provides in terms of "reading" music and playing pieces almost immediately. (Reading is in quotes because initially it is color coded (rather than on a staff.) - And today we enjoyed our first recital: it was very well-organized, nice and short for the parents and a chance for the kids to perform. They loved the recital and got a great sense of accomplishment from it. I would highly recommend this program for beginners! (And from the super impressive performance today by some of the older students, it seems like continuing with the classes and the private instruction pays off.)

Knowing that violin playing has a steep learning curve, our plan was to just get her exposed to some music lessons and see how everything would pan out. From the very first lesson, Ms. Lizzy has shown a great deal of patience and she certainly had her ways to keep my daughter interested and engaged. My daughter sometimes could get really frustrated quickly. However, Ms. Lizzy was able to make things work for her very well. For example, when my daughter got stuck on a difficult passage or a new bowing or fingering pattern, and was on the verge of getting emotional, Ms. Lizzy would guide her to play something my daughter was familiar with, and it worked wonder to calm her down and reestablish confidence. She will then guide her back later to tackle the place where she was stuck on. In addition, she would also take quality time to converse with my daughter and guide her on how to handle challenges in each new song and techniques. Her being a great teacher to my daughter eventually inspired me to join the party to take my beginner lesson with her along with my daughter. Fast forward to now, we are close to a year into our lessons. My daughter and I were able to play some duets from Suzuki's Duets for Violin book already. The weekly lesson with Ms. Lizzy has been one of the best times we are looking forward to, rains or shine.
