The guy serving was preoccupied on his phone while serving yea that could have been handled better. cashier had no customer service at all no smile, no welcome, just standing there. Food portion was a bit too large for me because I just wanted a little bite for lunch, that was more a dinner plate than lunch. Then no substitution when I'm willing to pay to substitute makes no sense cuz I didn't want rice. Cornbread was dry, chicken tastes cheap, potato salad was too much and watery. Prepare to wait in line, but trust me, it's worth the wait! I heard about it on Somebody Feed Phil and saw the profile on Instagram! I ordered a variety of food so I could take it home and enjoy a few meals. The yams are simply divine, buttery and sweet. The turkey dressing was so satisfying! The turkey wing was served with rice and was ladled with gravy. So delicious and tender! The ribs honestly could stand alone with out any sauce. The spot is small and a local black business in the historic Eatonville (oldest all Black town in the US) Happy Black history Month. As soon as I parked my car on the side I smelled the food cooking on the grill. Took me back to how the streets in NYC smell. I waited in line for about 6mins but it was so worth it. Vibes- I'm all about the vibes and this place has good energy. You can tell this place is respected in the community by how friendly and warm the customer and service interactions were. For the short time I felt like we were all family waiting in line at Thanksgiving. When I got to the food Ms. Kim piled the food in those trays. For $20 I got all this food. Honestly I was having a crappy day and like most women I thought a good meal or snack would help. So when I got in my car I took a few bites and Oh M G! (You know that scene in Ratatouille, when the food took him to his childhood) Yes all that. Side note- everyone knew my mom as Ms. Kim (Rest in peace) so I did almost cry. I heard about this restaurant a couple years ago and have passed by it countless times. I finally decided to stop in. I ordered the veggie plate that consisted of three sides of your choice. Such awesome true soul food. Whopping portion sizes are given @ Kook'n with Kim. I got the turkey lunch which came with turkey over yellow rice and a side of black eyed peas. You can see from my pictures how huge the portions are. The food is very flavorful and truly soulful soul food. The Mac and cheese was my favorite. The banana pudding is pretty delicious also. Parking is limited and if you come on a Sunday during lunch hours like I did then expect to be parking on the sides of the street. The service is top tier, this establishment is ran by pure professionals. Kook'n with Kim appeared to be a major hit with the community during my visit as the line went well out the door to the street. They've got a good thang going on here! We were looking for soul food, on a Saturday afternoon and Yelp led me here. I hadn't read the reviews, just saw the pics and decided we were going! Glad we did. They're a no frills kinda joint and I'm ok with that! Walk in, order, take ya food and go! OMG!! So much food! I stopped at Kook'n with Kim and picked up fried chicken lunches for me and a coworker. When we opened them back at work I was calling everyone over to look at the portions. It was like you were taking a plate home from a family gathering and your aunt piled on enough for everybody at your house. Line Out The Door Today On A Sunday! I have been wanting to try her new location since I tried her food from her gas station booth many years ago. Sunday, I was craving some good ole soul food and her restaurant came to my mind. Her brick and mortar location is a drive but I was hoping it was worth it. As soon as I pulled up from afar the cars were pretty piled up for her food. There was a line out the door and this location is small. The weather was hot and I advice anyone to bring hydration while in line. There were moments were I felt I wanted to just grab a drink from the cooler to cool off. A few customers did that actually while in line - Purchased drinks while waiting in line. Line moved SLOW. I mean slow. I didn't know u can pre pay and call in orders and have your food picked up that way. Some people drove up - passed the line and grabbed their food and left. I will do that next time! So sundays is Oxtails day. They were sold out by 12pm. They open at 11- 4 pm sundays. So I did not have the chance to try the Oxtails. Instead - Looking at the menu , I ordered the Kids meal baked chicken with sweet corn and mac & cheese. That was $7.99 - It came with 2 drumsticks and a thigh. Large portions of the sides! This is def a meal for an adult as well. 2nd plate was Smothered Turkey Wings with yellow rice, collards and mac & cheese. They were out of dressing and yams. also 2 orders of Banana Pudding and An order of Bread Pudding. The banana pudding portion was huge. The bread pudding you get 2 slices per order and they were good portions. Ordered a slice of meatloaf because that pan was almost empty when I saw it from the heat pan. So this day they ran out of Mac & Cheese and they had PILES of plates waiting for the cooked Mac & Cheese - That alone delayed the process of cashing out and leaving. Let's talk about the food tasting : The baked chicken - The size of it is small , Mind you it was a kids meal. But The chicken was seasoned well def Paprika is part of the seasoning, Tender chicken. The sweet corn was overly sweet but tolerable and delicious def butter was in there too. The Mac & Cheese is DELICIOUS. Cheesy and Thick. Seasoned well and you can taste the cheese. One of the best Mac & Cheese by far! The Smothered Turkey Wings - The wings were large and seasoned well I just wished the skin was more roasted because I didn't like the skin texture kinda slimey ish but it was tender meat and good. I wished it had more gravy as well smothered on the wings. The yellow rice was delicious it tasted like it was cooked in broth not water. Seasoned well. The collards were delicious! It has a crisp yet tender greens! Had chunks of smoked meats in my greens. Also it was not bitter! Had right amount of taste to it! Of course the Mac & Cheese was delicious. This plate was HEAVY. The portions here are huge. Even with the kids meal the sides were HUGE. The meatloaf was DELICIOUS. Very tender and moist! One of the best meatloaf I have had! The brown gravy is delicious. Seasoned well meatloaf! I would def order this again! This is why the pan was almost empty when I saw it! The banana Pudding was DELICIOUS! Fresh bananas and Nilla wafers with the thick pudding! For the price I would def order this again! This pudding had subtle sweetness to it. Love this banana pudding!! The Bread Pudding was also DELICIOUS. Moist and tender and although it was sweet - It was not overly sweet. It has raisins in it and coconut shreds. I think it has mashed up bananas in it because it kind of tasted like a moist banana bread too. Def order this again. Staff here are ok they felt rushed and overwhelmed but they all handled the pressure of the hungry customers. Ms. Kim came out and helped place some food in the steam pans. The mac n cheese was tasty as well but i think maybe a certain type of cheese may be used that i don't fully care for, the consistency and seasoning of it was good though. I am soooo happy I came across this place on FB. I saw that their Thursday dinner special was hog maw and I'm from the north so finding hog maw is very challenging.
