No matter what the time of year, the Kookaba, an Australian-themed restaurant just up the hill in…read moreSaundersfoot, is always packed. And that's a huge achievement considering that during the winter months the village is like a ghost town. You might not think an Australian theme is perhaps the most sophisticated way of eating, but the Kookaba does it in such a cute and endearing way that you can't help but love it. Decked out in all kinds of memorabilia from surfboards to koalas and with Australian sports on the tube and draught beers, not only is this a cool place to kick back, the food's great too. I've had many a lovely fish steak here - the salmon's great, the tuna's delicious and the swordfish is something else altogether. Portions here are HUGE. All fish and meat steaks are served with a choice of fries or a deliciously crisp baked potato, and the table sauces brought over in little metal pots are plentiful and tasty, complimenting the side salads perfectly. The burgers are also fab, and there's a choice of more unusual meats like ostrich and kangaroo as well as a good few veggie options, simple but yum-worthy desserts and little bites to begin such as deep fried camembert, one of our favourites. It's also one of those places where everybody knows your name. This is partly down to Saundersfoot being so small, but partly because the staff are so friendly. Long may the Kookaba live. Its novelty is definitely one of its strengths, but the warm welcome will melt even the iciest of hearts.

How many ways can I say YUM?…read more I first experienced the wonder that is the Plantaganet one Christmas, when the the pivotal three couples in our group of 'kids' munched a glorious meal here. It was amazing. Salmon that melted in the mouth, steaks as soft as butter... Incredible. As a result we've been back countless times since and booked the entire place out for last New Year's Day, something which shall doubtless be happening this year too. If you can catch it in winter, do have some of the delicious mulled wine they serve at the bar. The bar itself is gorgeously decked out in wooden furnishings with lush little wicker cushioned seats and quirky features. The staff are super attentive and the proprietor is something of a character. But the real stars are the dishes themselves. This place does fantastic mussels (fish and shellfish are a bit of a speciality here), the meat is cooked to perfection and the sides they provide you with are insanely tasty. Oh and you must have the bread to pick at for the start of your meal, baked fresh and full of olives and sundried tomatoes. It's a rabbit warren of a place with winding stairs, and it's family friendly and harbours tons of charm and character. I can never wait to come back here whenever I leave Wales. Do try it!

I got the Arancini for the appetizer and it was really good. Chef Arno does a great job. For main course, I got the gnocchi and I really enjoyed it even though gnocchi is a bit of a hit or miss for me. I got the creme caramel for dessert which was just like flan, so was a-ok. My husband got the prawn skewers with garlic butter and he liked it quite a bit. For main course, he got the monk fish in Thai green curry sauce, which was very flavorful. It was a great dining experience and will definitely be back.

Ah, to a controversial subject. We used to know the owners of the Mulberry. But since it's changed…read morehands, what used to be an excellent restaurant has become somewhat hit and miss. When I first ate at this place I was feeling somewhat self-conscious. I was just walking again properly after recovering from my broken knee and had a moment of pure stress because I tried to get into my high heels and my left foot, used to being elevated on a sofa, kept swelling up due to the sudden pressure of walking around again. Why was I so stressed? Why did I require heels? Well, we were nervous about this meal. It was a huge group of people, some of whom were the BF's friends from Saundersfoot, family friends, his sister's friends, his sister's best friend whose own sister happens to be a somewhat unruly ex of my own BF. Oh what tangled webs these Welsh weave. Anyway, long story short it all worked out swimmingly as a strapless dress and leggings alongside glitzy flats apparently had the girl in tears and she left early after thinking I was really pretty and thin or something. Not that I wanted her to think that, it just meant I must have looked nice. Anyway, that aside, the food was rustic and fresh. Starters of fishcakes were pretty delish and although my butternut squash veg was a little greasy as a result, the truffle oil really added to it. Plus we were given homemade bread with sundried tomatoes baked into it and stunning wine. A dark and stormy cocktail really finished the meal off beautifully. Cut to New Year's EVE Eve, 2009. The day before the sis-in-law gets married, we all gather for a meal here. The new proprietor is somewhat... rude. There are few people skills there. The boys had to wait about half an hour for a peppercorn sauce because it has to be cooked. You order steaks, presumably they either come with a sauce or you're offered one. Them's the rules, surely? My dad-in-law had ordered me a veggie pasta bake which sounded exactly the kind of wholesome, hearty thing I needed after a long train journey and a bout of nausea, but unfortunately the pasta was rubbery, the cheese sauce was underseasoned and I wound up only eating the vegetables, leaving a fair bit behind. Oh dear. It's a great shame when a restaurant changes hands and loses its spark. The Welsh clan have since stopped eating there because the pizzazz has gone AWOL. Still, for a few drinks and a bite to eat it's in a lovely location and as cosy as you can imagine.
