I'm being generous with three stars. If it were possible, I'd give it two and a half. I went to this place based on the reviews here on Yelp. Well, the food was good but I don't think it deserves any raves. The prices on the meals were okay, and the gyros plate I got was a good portion and tasty. The lamb was quality and the toasted pita is some of the best I've had, as was the tzatziki. The salad was very good. The rice pilaf was downright lousy, though. I didn't finish it. Was it even pilaf? I couldn't detect any difference from boiled rice, except that it had over-cooked, barely edible vermicelli. The meal was about $9. The prices on the sides, though, are ridiculous. Is there gold dust in the hummus? Do they make the baklava with unicorn tears? That's the only thing that could justify prices like that in a dive like this. I've had great baklava from Greek dives for less than half the price per piece. And here's a warning for new visitors: Do NOT visit in cold weather! This is a warm-weather place ONLY. We went for dinner on the chilliest evening so far this November, and we're talking about a place that is right on top of the ocean. It was very chilly and breezy. There's indoor dining but they don't close the doors when they're open for business! Ever! The doors and windows were wide open and even the people working there (who are the family who plainly own the place) were bundled up and frozen. I know because we complained to a guy who mentioned how cold he was and and he told us emphatically but with no explanation that they never close the doors. I wore my sweater and scarf the entire time and my gloves except when I was eating. It was awful. That policy is ridiculous and it made it difficult to enjoy my meal. If I do go back, it's going to be in August... and I'll get my dessert elsewhere. read more

Well, we only bought a couple soft drinks here, but, I have to say I would NEVER eat here!! The cook? or owner? or whatever was scraping crap from his vents and when someone ordered something he walked right over and grabbed a frozen burger patty out and threw it on a nearby grill. Ewww...no hand wash...nothing. And shouldn't you clean your vents after hours?? What if some of the crap gets on that nearby grill? Microscopic amounts of ewww in your food? The family that owns this needs to either get their "stuff" together or sell to someone that knows what they are doing. I almost didn't drink my soda thinking if they treat their grills that badly...who knows when the last time they cleaned their soda machine is. Disgusting! Avoid this place at all costs! read more

One of my favorite "dives" in San Diego. They guys working there have been there since I can remember. They cook everything fresh. The fries have some secret spice (ok maybe it's salt, but it's secret salt!) making them the best fries in San Diego. I love their Gyros and the Greek Salad. Not impressed. The guy taking my order (probably he owner), was snappy and unwelcoming. I ordered the gyro. Just the gyro. He charged me for the MEAL and it came with fries. I didn't want it. I didn't order it. Butt I paid for it. I asked for a cup and he gave me a styrofoam cup! UGH! Who uses those still?! I said "I can't drink out of that, do you have a plastic one?". He went and grabbed a used solo cup that was hot near some sort of warmer and handed it to me. really?! Anyway, the gyro was ok, nothing special. There were two tomatoes and a couple cukes. Great spot to grab quick take out to eat on the beach. Its literally steps from the beach & great option if you don't feel like dining at a busy place. I'm not usually a bread person but their pita bread is bomb and comes with the salad. The gyro salad is my go to & it never disappoints. They don't skimp on the meat either. We stopped in here first thing when we got to the beach to get some quick lunch for four kids. I ordered one Gyro plate for them to share because they were already eating ice cream next door at the Dryers ice cream shop. This resturant has been here since I was a teenager in the 90's and the same guy is running it! He hasn't aged a bit! I enjoyed a mexican beer while I waited for my food and the wait wasn't to long. I finished my beer pretty quickly. I was thirsty! Any way, The food was hot and made perfectly. No complaints from the kids or me. The portions were generous. The salad was fresh and yummy. This is the cheapest place I think you can find to eat in the Mission Beach area. It is a greek and american place. I got the kids pizza, my honey a gyro and myself a greek salad. It was really good! The food was made fresh (gyros right in front of your eyes). The owner was funny, you could tell he wanted to yell at his employees but their were customers so he would smile and ask them rudely to do something (it was hilarious). Oh and the greek salad came with tzatziki and pita which is not just good but amazing (I dont even like tzatziki sauce) .It was cheap, fast and very tasty. First time at this place during my recent visit to San Diego. I was craving for some Greek food, and a cousin of mine recommended this spot. I ordered a Gyro plate, which came with gyro, pita, salad, and rice. The meal itself was good, but seems like I didn't get enough meat for what I paid for. Maybe it was just my luck that night? As I'm walking in, a guy who is leaving says this place serves the best gyros in town. I think: yeah right... I'll be the judge of that. Greeks are known for huge portions and great value.....but not at this tourist trap. Yes, the portions are still generous and the flavor is there, but $21.50 for a Greek Salad, Gyros Plate and fries with one soda is an outright gang-raping of the tourist. The family, girlfriend, & I were all hungry while walking around Belmont Park and Mission Beach, yet couldn't find a seafood joint to agree on or a place that allowed someone under 21 in. Stumbled upon this once seeing the words "GREEK AND AMERICAN." We just had to try it. The atmosphere felt more like being back in Chicago or on the east coast, a bit divey but cozy at the same time. The owner on the grill was extremely pleasant, asking us questions about Kansas City and talking baseball with us. He had the Royals-Angels game on and was inquisitive about my fanship of the perennial losing Royals. Had missed out on lunch and needed a nice meal before the Padres game, so I opted for the Greek Plate, never expecting a mass of food to appear before me. Gyro meat, chicken, a nice Greek salad, rice, pita, and some tzatziki that spread perfectly over my pita. Had a nice little gyro made from every bit on the plate just for fun and still had a ton left over. All made to order, all delicious. Sure, I didn't get seafood on the beach, but I'd rather trade a meh frozen fish taco for a nice seaside Greek meal with some baseball on the TV. We were staying nearby in a beach house rental for a week. We visited this place twice. I love Greek food. We tried both the chicken plate and the gyro plate. Hands-down the Gyro plate was the better of the two. Tender Gyro meat, rice pilaf, Greek salad, pita, and Tzatiki sauce. The staff and owners are so friendly and it's genuine too! The man on the phone said he would try to call the driver and hung up. 10 minutes later...no update. I called back and cancelled. No apologies from the staff whatsoever. Fast forward to 10:30pm. I'm still craving a gyro after work and decide to drive to the location and give them a try in person. The hours listed say open until 2am. We had walked down here from our beach rental house, hoping to find something solid for lunch with the kids. I can pretty much always be persuaded to enter any establishment serving gyro meat, so I was in. We found pizza by the slice, so the kids were covered. Ordered the gyro/chicken plate with salad. My only point of discontent was the salad dressing -- which is usually no-brainer in a Greek place, but this one was kind of oily and tasteless, like they didn't stir it before serving or something. Gyro and chicken meat however were top notch, due to the fact that they finished them both on the grill before serving (and after shaving the gyro stuff off the rotating log it comes on) to make both the meats crispy and absolutely delicious. It's a walk-up to the counter, order and then they either have you go back in and grab it or serve it out through the front window while you wait outside. Nothing fancy, but it's a great quick hit for lunch with or without kids. read more

One word: FALAFEL. It tastes fresh - you can really identify the chick peas, and another thing - love the tzaziki sauce with it. It's not runny like alot of other versions of the recipe are, it's nice and rich, with little bits of crunchy cucumber! Service is prompt - these guys are for real! A couple of other things that are for real... the atmosphere and the baklava. If you're looking for velvet curtains and leather seats and guys in suits... forget about it. I wrote my first review and I thought - maybe I have a minute to write another one that doesn't have a thousand reviews already and thought about my very favorite local little hole in the wall and sure enough only a few people have reviewed - but - it made me smile to see that others appreciate it as well. Since I haven't reviewed much I will say that I am a NYC raised foodie - while not a really snobby one I do have a pretty good understanding of great food from growing up in a gourmet household - that's to qualify what type of experience I look for in a meal from a burger to a 5 course dinner. Which is why it's impressive that this oddly located greek joint is just a jewel to me. It has zero to do with the fact that I live around the cormer. There are at least 10 places to eat withing walking distance - the are all mediocre and would get at most 3 stars. So, I love mediteranean food and I love gyros specifically but there is just something about the gyros plate from Kojacks. It's greasy - but just greasy enough. I lived in Chicago for the summer and found a hole in the wall Greek place which simply couldn't compare to Kojacks. Maybe it's because they do such a turn of business (in the summer they go through up to 15 gyro spindles a day - I don't know about you but that seems like a hell of a lot of meat to me!) so that the food is always fresh .... hmmm probably not because gyros come frozen ...... I will say this - wherever they get the pita from it kicks ass for pita. Oh - yeah - 1 thing don't get pizza here! It's not that it's bad - it's just like a waste - it's like going to your favorite steak house and getting the frickin chicken. The owners are super friendly and you also get to visit the touristy part of South Mission Beach (go ahead - take a ride on the Giant Dipper - don't miss that opportunity while you are here - you will love it!). The only complaint is that the booths are a little uncomfortable but I wouldn't knock it down a notch just based on that. The price can't be beat either. read more

I know Richard, George and Mike are the owners at Kojacks. They are my friends. That lady who claims that the police were called in is a LIE. Why does Yelp print LIES? Oh I know why.. These guys aren't advertising with Yelp so suddenly there's a jaded review to write on how blah blah did this and blah blah did that. After Yelping many businesses, I have to say that in all fairness, these negative reviews keep Yelp in biz,. A pattern is easy for us who *know* yelp can spot it and see a pattern that works out to be this. Paid advertising with Yelp helps negative reviews disappear! plus placing favorable reviews at the top of the business listing. It's best to just trust google place reviews. read more

Randomly ended up at this place, so glad we did. I ordered the fish and chips. I like my fish crunchy enough to when you bite into it it doesn't fall apart and when you put lemon on it it doesn't get soggy....it was perfectly fried. The portions are plenty, the fries were good too. Both of my friends got the chicken sandwich and said it was amazing as well. This is the perfect place if you just want a quick meal and don't want to spend a lot. The service is friendly and they even sell beer. Will definitely be back! read more

A family member took me to this location only steps from Mission Beach. She's been here a lot and the reception she received from the guy behind the counter tells me that the service is super friendly. Guy was a real character. Everything is cooked to order. I had a Philly cheese steak which was really greasy, but excellent. The gyros salads were pretty decent. The fries looked good, but we got everything to go to the beach and the fries became limp steaming inside the foam clamshell container after just a few minutes. The first time I went here was in 2010 and I haven't been back ever since. I went with a group of friends because friend was interested in our other friends friend. So being the adults we are we went out to dinner to "hang out" when I knew, my friend knew, and the girl knew what was really happening was a chaperoned first date. Anyways, the gyro was awesome! Way too much meat for the bread and it spills out leaving you with another lamb snack for after your gyro. Everything was great! After we ate the girl my friend wanted to hang out with got sick. It has nothing to do with food. It just so happens that after this she went to the doctor and got diagnosed with celiac disease. You'll be happy to know they are now happily married! Go to Kojacks. So I order from here for the first time tonight. I don't know why this place has been rated as 5 stars? I ask for mushrooms and Swiss cheese on my burger (Paid for the cheese) there was no cheese at all on my burger. My girlfriend ordered a gyro with extra sauce on the side. There was none.
