I had a horrific experience at the Kohl's Rock Hill Store. I went there to pick out a Valentine's Day outfit. I ended up finding a pair of pants and top that I liked and then decided I would buy new shoes to go with it. I had to hunt, but finally found my size. I also stopped by the fine jewelry counter and purchased a blue topaz cross necklace that I found to be very very pretty. I had picked up 2 cheaper pairs of costume earrings and tossed them into the cart. I didn't check out all the items at the jewelry counter, just the cross necklace, because I wasn't finished looking around and shopping. When I did check out, the cashier was very friendly and even asked me if I wanted my hangers. I looked around in the cart for the pair of cross earrings and couldn't find them. I thought that they perhaps were tangled up in the clothing. After I checked out, I was accosted in the parking lot by a man. He didn't identify himself, he just told me that I needed to come back into the store. Then he said he was with loss prevention and I needed to come to his office. He proceeded to ask me if I had concealed anything that I didn't pay for. I told him no, and then thought about the earrings. I checked my purse, and sure enough, there they were. I offered to pay for them and he told me no that I had made a decision to steal them. I offered to pay for them over and over. I had just bought over $215.00 worth of merchandise, including a piece of fine jewelry. I told him I most certainly did not intend of anything of that nature. I am a former early childhood school teacher and now work for the state department of mental health. I in no way shape or form have ever intended to steal anything. He threatened me with having me arrested and told me that it would be thousands of dollars to get out of jail. He then asked if I had stolen from Kohls before!!!!! I said absolutely not. I don't steal. This was just an unfortunate mishap and an innocent mistake. He proceeded to tell me that he had watched me from the time that I walked into the store. I am an attractive female and found his statement to be very creepy. He said he saw me conceal the earrings in my purse, which I did not. I had at one point reached down into the cart to get my cell phone to answer a text, but that was it. Anyways, I was mortified, humiliated and felt targeted. He handed me a piece of paper that said I have to pay restitution for shoplifting. I have never stolen anything in my life. I am a very loyal customer of Kohls, have your store card and spend several thousands of dollars a year at the Rock Hill location. I particularly like your home store, the women's clothing department and your fine jewelry counter. The only restitution that is needed is to reel in this loss prevention gestapo so that he doesn't continue berating, humiliating and accosting other shoppers. I have been humiliated, embarrassed and feel victimized by this incident. All because a pair of $5 costume earrings fell into my purse which I had placed in the cart. I would like for some type of restitution of this unfortunate situation. One question I have, is why didn't he ask me about the pair of earrings he watched me pick up before I left the store? I feel this is entrapment. I gladly would have searched further for them. Also, this loss prevention man told me that I would be "trespassed" from Kohls and that I could never return to any Kohls or even enter the parking lot. I was in shock. I couldn't believe any of this was happening to me. I have cried for hours because of this and can't believe it happened at one of my favorite places to shop. I would like some sort of apology for this unfortunate situation. I would like my name removed from whatever list he placed it on and an apology for not giving a loyal Kohls customer the benefit of the doubt. Instead, he blatantly accused me of stealing and jumped me in the parking lot scaring me to death. read more
