Only found a few places that rented scooters in Florence and was deterred by some bad reviews, but so glad we went with Knowleggi. Francesca made it super easy and was so kind and friendly helping us.
We rented a 125cc Kymco scooter for a day in Chianti for 50 euro for a full 24 hours. We were outfitted with two helmets and were shown how to use the scooter features. They gave us a map and said that we could park anywhere in Florence at night where there were scooters (they assured us that scooters could travel safely with in the ZTL). The scooter had a place to store/lock the two helmets while parked and there is room under the seat for a small messenger sized bag. We did end up finding a gas station upon return (on Via Senese), but that was also a challenge to navigate on how to pay (cash only). Ended up asking a local using hand signals, but since the station was self serve (kiosk closed for holidays), we didn't get the change from our 10 euro (the tank is small... a full tank was about 6.50 euro). Again, for your sanity, it probably makes sense just to pay the fee to have them fill up the gas.
While the process of renting and returning was super easy, you should definitely have confidence driving a scooter as well as navigating in italian traffic! Driving through Chianti was beautiful and amazing, but navigating out of and back into Florence was stressful. I had remembered to download the Google map of the region so I could access it offline. Without that, we would have been toast.
Remember to review the italian street signs -- the red circle with line through it means ONE WAY STREET. The blue signs with arrows indicate directions that you can continue... so if it has a straight arrow and a left arrow, you can keep straight or turn left -- but not right. If it only has a left arrow, you must turn left. It's also helpful to know that a red slash through a city name or through a speed limit means that you are EXITING or LEAVING that zone. read more
