Do NOT order a steak here. We stopped by on Friday on our way to a weekend trip and had a good experience. We were happy with our burger and the service was friendly so we decided to stop by again on our way back into town. The meal was disappointing. The service was still excellent, however the food was not good. Our second experience started with us overhearing the cook be extremely rude toward the server and I wish we would have taken that as a sign to get out of there. We ordered and had to wait almost an entire hour for our food. We considered leaving after waiting about 40 minutes for the food and again, wish we would have. We ordered the local favorite, the sirloin steak and eggs. They were out of the sirloin so we had to upgrade to the ribeye for an extra $6, just for the steak to come out way overdone. We were starving by the time the food came and even still barely ate our food. The eggs were slimy and overcooked and then the steak that we ordered medium rare came out well done. read more

This restaurant is on the way to the Cathedral Gorge State Park from Las Vegas. It's a good stop to make to use the restroom and to get some lunch. We ordered the Veggie burger, fish and chips, and The Works omelette. The food was very good and filling. Service was ok. They forgot one of our orders, and they should have just asked us if we still wanted it or not and be truthful about how long it would take. It really dampened our mood that they weren't being honest about how long we needed to wait. But, overall still a good place to eat. read more

We were driving home from a 5 day backcountry trip in Yosemite and stopped in before 7am hungry and looking for some breakfast. It was a holiday Monday, and the place didn't seem to be open. However, Erin saw us and said there's no way she can let travelers leave hungry and welcomed us on in. We stopped in and ordered two takeout entrées, and it took 45 minutes to get our food. The place wasn't busy; there was only one person sitting at the counter. In hindsight, we should have asked about the wait time, but we did try calling ahead -- no one answered the phone. We were in the area Sunday morning and decided to check out Knotty Pine for breakfast. What a cute place with such friendly staff. It was Fathers Day so they were a bit busy, but they took care of everyone. The food was good. Biscuits and gravy were creamy and peppery ( I love that I didn't have to add pepper!) and the pancakes were so good! My partner said the chicken fried steak was good as well. We come here often when we're in the area. Service is always prompt, food is always excellent, the servers and bartenders are always friendly and hospitable. Fun western atmosphere. There's a family friendly diner on one side of the building and a bar with slots & pool tables on the other. Kids are welcome in the booth area of the bar. Gorgeous views of the mountains and historic train station from the restaurant windows. We love watching the trains go by. Hubs had pork chops (made with a hint of rosemary on the flat top, tender and so juicy), with bacon green beans (just like gramma used to make), mashed potatoes with country gravy (nice and peppery). I had the hot open-face shaved turkey breast, which had a lovely slight char from the grill, on buttered toast & mashed potatoes & smothered in a savory brown gravy. Absolutely great experience!!! I was born and raised in a small town in Mississippi, so I am no stranger to small town diners. So I know a good one when I see one. As my friends & I entered this restaurant, we were immediately greeted and told we could sit wherever we like. After sitting, our server very promptly arrived and gave us menus, took drink orders, etc.. The restaurant had about 4-5 tables full of guests and a few people sitting at the food bar, and our server appeared to be the only server but with another lady helping behind the counter. Although she was very busy with lots to run around and do, she was very attentive, helpful, and friendly with us during our entire visit. The overall hospitality was phenomenal!! The food came out fairly quick and everything tasted great. My friend and I particularly loved the house made ranch! If you like ranch, you'll love this stuff. It's yummy! Took a day trip from Las Vegas to Caliente. We arrived at the Knotty Pine Restaurant at 1:15 pm. The restaurant was not too busy and we helped ourselves to a booth. Shortly the waitress arrived with the menu and water. My wife chose the "Chicken Fried Steak" and I had the "Trail Boss Burger" with Onion rings. My wife said it was one of the best chicken fried steaks she had ever eaten. The mashed potatoes were authentic and the gravy was smooth and very tasty, it came with a side of fresh green beans and a salad. My burger was cooked to perfection I'd asked for hot pepper cheese and it arrived with its full 1/2 lbs. goodness with all the fixings you could want. The dill pickles were delicious the tomatoes and lettuce very fresh. I could not finish this masterpiece. Now for the onion rings, nothing frozen here, fresh cut onions dipped in their batter and deep fried. They were so good it broke my mouth. Maybe that's why I couldn't finish the cheeseburger. But the best part came at the register. This meal was less than $40.00! If you're ever in the area be sure to try them out you won't regret it. read more

Wow great food! And great service from the good old boys - both were women, very friendly locals. I thought it was just a diner, but apparently it's attached to a casino. All I had was the food. We usually eat at a place across the street when passing through Caliente but a local mentioned we should give Knotty Pine a try. We were pleased. We started with a order of onion rings. Could have done with out the bed of lettuce under them but let me tell you those were some tasty rings! I ordered a salad that was big enough to eat on for 2 or 3 days. The veggies tasted very fresh. My man had a pastrami burger with ortegas on it. He loved it. We both had a couple sodas and the total for everything was $20.32. Not bad for eating out and the food being tasty! The cook even came out to ask how our food was and was very polite. The server was friendly and checked on us regularly. The decor is wood with novelty signs on the wall and t-shirts for sale. Had a tasty lunch here today while passing through southern Nevada. Standard diner-type food, plus breakfast all day! But here's the real reason I'm a fan: in the middle of the Nevada desert, they have "vegeburgers!" And they're not the crappy, flavorless veggie burgers where you put ketchup on and all you can taste is the ketchup and all you can ever remember tasting in your life is just ketchup. It was a real, (I'm guessing) Morningstar patty, on a grilled bun, with (very little, all right) lettuce, tomato, and red onion. And if you don't opt for the $1 fry upgrade, you get a bag of potato chips-- which is handy if you're on the road and not that hungry yet, but planning to venture onto the extraterrestrial highway. My mom's cheeseburger was ok, standard once-frozen patty with cheese melted on it, and it came with thousand island dressing to put on it. The fries were really good, though-- if you don't mind dipping in sweet generic, non-Heinz ketchup! The decor is great, with a big Union Pacific painting in the dining room, the narrative on the back of the menu is charmingly disjointed, the local conversation is great to subtly eavesdrop, and there is a "Rough Rider" condom dispenser in the ladies' room. No sanitary products. For your food and contraceptive needs, though, this is the best place around! read more

We had to order food to go because we are traveling with dogs. When my husband went inside the restaurant was busy and there was only one waitress. When he asked if he could order to go the waitress was very rude to him. It is understandable that she wouldn't be able to put his order right away but there is no reason to be rude about it. I couldn't believe how efficient this restaurant was. We came in on a Saturday morning & the place was full. There were around a dozen booths, & a counter that sat around a dozen more. We got 2 seats at the counter & settled in. There was 1 waitress & 1 cook. My 1st thought was, "small town diner, overloaded customer capacity=long wait times. After sitting down at the counter, my buddy & I were greeted by our server/cashier/bus gal. Her moves were efficient, & effective. She had the multi task thing down. Before we knew it, we hat 2 coffees & waters in front of us, including cream & sugar. I watched as the server, & the cook, a gal in her early 20's worked together, putting out dish after dish of big portioned breakfasts. Everything was happening quickly. We ordered our breakfasts, I had the breakfast burrito, & my buddy ordered bacon & eggs. We were served our breakfasts less than 7 minutes later, with these two gals cranking out the food. Our server totaled checks, worked the till, cleared tables, took orders, & served the food. It was an amazing thing to see her calmly deal with the breakfast rush like a pro. The cook was constantly putting food in the window. I was surprised how she managed it. The food was awesome! Fresh ingredients, hash browns were freshly cooked, not like some places where they've been sitting on the grill for hours. Eggs were perfect. The salsa was nice, with plenty of cheddar to finish it off. My bro said his eggs, bacon, & potatoes were as good as a simple dish like that can get.
