Knollwood is a dump,,,,we had our family member scheduled to be transferred from Sibley to Knollwood and was placed in a room that smelled of urine all over the bathroom floor and the walls were filthy dirty, the visitors chairs had embedded stains and small bugs everywhere. The entire bed, handles headboard, mattress had salvia embedded into the plastic We witnessed a patient in a wheelchair with bloody toes on both feet with a pair of dirty booties. He indicated that the nurse would not give him batteries for his hearing aid or stop the bleeding. Most importantly on the day of his arrival in order to receive care the social worker had our family to attest that Knollwood was his primary residence in order to receive payments from and to Medicare and Blue Cross. As of today it's been 5 months since leaving Knollwood continues to submit invoices for services to Medicare and Blue Cross Blue Shield and Knollwood continues to bill and is receiving payments. Knollwood presents itself as a prestigious rehabilitation facility but in fact patients that should be in memory care and acute long term care are put on the same floor as those who are short term rehabilitation care. How are they getting away with billing insurance companies and sending payments, both to a nonprofit and for profit company which all of Knollwood intake documents are specifically for Military Families Members While in Knollwood our family kept their outside doctors and upon leaving we were given a slip for his doctors to sign. We learned on the day we were leaving noticed that from our outside doctor evaluation reports were put on-transferred onto Knollwood treating doctors medical history and recorded as if Knollwood was the doctor treating our love one. As a caregiver having had to endure overwhelming pressure and with the staff of unqualified doctors and nurses, some that couldn't understand English did not give and correct dosages of medication and could not interpret the diagnosis therefore his medication prescribed was not given throughout the 21 days such that we received calls each morning to tell us that they were trying to kill him and because the three types of medications were to keep him alive. At the hands of Knollwood was something like a SYFI movie. The staffing communications were a joke and the conditions were horrific which caused a tremendous amount of anxiety. read more

Knollwood's anonymous response to my review is laughable and doesn't address why my repeated phone calls to speak to a member of management about the Bullying event by Mr White and escalated to ret. gen McHale and ret. col. Bricker. were never returned. The anonymous "response" also makes sweeping claims! Well, my name is Dan Hoover the proud son of a combat soldier and a non-paid Caregiver to my Mom and here's my reply to your anonymous response! Bricker and McHale- These employees are not respected by the residents of Knollwood that I've spoken to. They say they are overpaid/can't understand why they need assistants and claim these two men are responsible for taking away many amenities that Knollwood once provided to these residents. This is just my opinion here but the redecorating is painful to look at. Anonymous responder- A military career ...even an illustrious one, (as you claim the current management once had) DOES NOT mean they can run a retirement community or have the "sensitivity training" required for the diverse family-member-caregivers that come daily to improve the quality of their parent/s lives. I believe their rank made them "out of touch" with changing perceptions/modes of behavior in the LGBTQ community. I assure you, "mess with one you mess with all". My husband was here last year for short term rehab. I cannot imagine a worse place. The short-term rehab patients are kept in the dementia ward, which is a horrible environment for vulnerable but mentally competent patients. My husband complained about his roommate keeping him awake at night. My first conversation with the director of the unit set the environment. My husband has been in short term rehab a few times, and he is always anxious about when he is going to be able to come home, and I asked the director about a discharge date. Her response to me was that she knew that I didn't want to pay for an extended stay and that he would not be kept longer than the period of time that Medicare would pay for. I had not mentioned a word about not wanting to pay for an extended stay. Her nastiness and arrogance was extremely off putting. The morning after his first night's stay, I called the facility to find out how my husband was and what he was doing. I was told by the person who answered the phone that she was busy and couldn't watch him every minute. When I complained to her about her attitude, she put a supervisor on speaker phone who told me that her employee was correct and that they couldn't watch people. When I complained to the director, she said that the person I talked to was probably overwhelmed by the number of questions. I'd asked two: how my husband was and what he was doing. When I visited a few days later, I found my husband in a wheel chair that did not have the big wheels that people use for mobility. DC law requires that a person be kept in the least restrictive environment, and that chair definitely does not qualify as the least restrictive environment for an ambulatory person. I complained to an attendant behind a desk, and he told me in no uncertain terms that my husband would be kept in that chair. I wheeled my husband back to his room, fuming and determined to call the authorities in the morning. This attendant must have checked my husband's records and seen that I was a lawyer, because he shortly came into my husband's room with a normal wheel chair and stated that we could do the best for my husband by working together. My husband really hated the place, and we picked a day for me to bring him home. I informed the director that I'd be taking him home on that date. I showed up in the evening to pick my husband up, and was expected to sign a form stating that I was taking my husband out against medical advice. I said that I'd be glad to after I read the form stating what that medical advice was. The person handling the form said that she didn't have access to the medical advice. Of course, I didn't sign the form. As bad as my husband and I were treated by this staff, it did not come close to the treatment his roommate's family received. On the evening that I picked up my husband, his roommate's daughter was there also - crying. She'd shown up to deliver clean clothes to her father only to find that he was near death. Nobody in the facility had bothered to call her to let her know. read more

Garth Green Garth Green 6 minutes ago While the facility itself is nice and the accommodations acceptable, I have serious reservations about the quality of nursing and medical care my mother is receiving there. The nurses and nurse assistants do not have the basic competency to empty, clean, and reassemble an ileostomy bag. My mother has been there for over 2 weeks and no one has been able to perform this basic function. It is disappointing and sad to find my mother in soiled sheets due to the lack of skill among the staff. I wish we had sent her someplace else. The head nurse tells me everything is ok and getting better but it is not. read more
