It is a small veteran owned business that has been serving the 11 million annual visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains for the past twenty years. My friend's hiking boots literally fell apart on the mountain so we stopped in to check out what kind of hiking boots they had. Prices seemed reasonable and they had a good selection. A salesperson spent some time talking to my friend and showing her the differences between the boots. In addition to hiking boots they carry anything a day hiker could need or want. They had a large selection of T-shirts, hiking gear including hats, ponchos which I really wish we had brought earlier when we got hit by a sudden rain storm, bug spray, sunblock, water bottles, backpacks, walking sticks, and anything else you could possibly want. If you forgot it, they got it! The Day Hiker is conveniently located a half mile from the entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park where some of the best hiking trails in the country await you.

Dennis welcomed my wife and I as soon as we walked in the door and after I explained my situation and target types of waters he took me straight to the perfect affordable setup. He expertly answered my questions and refrained from trying to upsell me to the readily available much more expensive options. Once we'd made our choices he left us to wander the store browsing. In the end I walked out with a nice rod and reel combo, a few extra leads and tippets and a big smile on my face. Specifically, I am a big fan of the BC stores including BC Outdoors, BC Market on the Square and BC Bakery. Regarding Bryson City Outdoors, they are connected to a tap hours so gear on the left and beer on the right. What's not to love? If you don't love beer they have wine too! Much to my surprise, I skipped the beer and went for gear. After perusing fleece jackets, hiking shoes, headlamps and the such, I landed on a new pair of socks. Not that I needed anything but the employees were so kind I just had to support this local business somehow. Hmm, maybe I should have gotten a pint after all.
