This thing was great, packed with flavor, the horseradish cream sauce, was very mild, but still added a small, but great bite to the overall sandwich. Being married to a Puerto Rican and having traveled to PR many times, this place tastes as authentic as being on the beach in Luquillo where there's a line of these The pastelillos, which are otherwise more recognizable as empanadas, were so good (chicken was our fav) and the pinchos are flavorful. There's a homemade guava pastry dessert that is so good that I have to practice some serious self-control not to eat the entire pack. What else is really good is the freshly-made pina coladas. They are non-alcoholic, but let me tell you...you don't miss the alcohol because they're so good! I wish they were open during the week, but the owner has another full-time job so he can't. What I didn't expect was that "tucked away" would mean tucked into a commercial business building, the kind of place you'd expect to find an insurance adjuster's waiting room, not lunch. Walking in, the only other person there was someone waiting on a to-go order. My first thought was that I'd made a mistake. The space felt sterile, stale, more office park than kitchen. I was wrong. Minutes from closing and not planning to come back through town, I asked the counter what people order. Buffalo chicken wrap, they said. I added a kolache -- they had an everything bacon version that caught my eye -- and a side of bacon potato salad. The order came out in brown to-go containers, and I walked back to the car bracing for disappointment. The kolache was a revelation. I'm not a connoisseur, I couldn't grade one against the platonic ideal, but if this is what they can be, then kolaches deserve a much wider audience. That pastry alone is reason enough to come back. The buffalo chicken wrap was right behind it: hearty, full flavored, well-balanced, in a tortilla with just enough toast to give it some structure. The potato salad looked, at first, like it was skimping on quantity, barely more than a dallop, but by the time I'd worked through the kolache and half of the wrap, I was full and grateful that half the wrap was still in the bag for later. My only real regret is that the leftovers won't taste the same when they're not at temperature. 4.6 stars, what not a solid five you ask? Here's where Carol's Kitchen breaks my brain a little. The food is warm, charming, careful -- the kind of meal that wants to be eaten slowly, at a table, with a conversation going. It's a country welcome. But the room is the opposite of that. It's a 30 Rock situation: Kenneth Parcell got dropped into a corporate office building and started cooking lunch for the suits. The food keeps trying to invite you to stay; the building keeps trying to push you back out to your car. The two are wildly out of sync. Service was on par with what you'd expect from a grab-and-go counter, helpful, not warm, doing the job. Nothing to complain about, but nothing matching what the food is reaching for, either. What I keep coming back to is that Carol's Kitchen deserves a different room. A table-service space with a slower pace, somewhere a community could build around what this kitchen is putting out. As it stands, the concept of the spot and the concept of the food are at odds, and the food is the one losing the argument. Still, if someone suggested going back later the same day, I wouldn't hesitate. I'd just be sad about the room again.

They started in Los Angeles, ended up on Shark Tank, and eventually became a pretty big deal. I even remember when they opened their brick-and-mortar location in West Hollywood in 2015. Yet somehow, it took me 14 years to actually eat one of their lobster rolls. It wasn't for lack of opportunity. I've seen them at the NC State Fair, but the lines were ridiculous. Their trucks have popped up closer to home a few times too, but it was always an inconvenient time, a little too far out of the way, or once again, a huge line. Today I just happened to be in Southern Pines and spotted their truck outside Lowe's. I definitely didn't come here specifically for them, but after 14 years, I wasn't going to pass it up. I got there about 30 minutes after they opened and there was NO LINE. Apparently today was finally my day. I ordered the Garlic Butter lobster roll ($25.95), with warm Maine lobster, butter, garlic, parmesan, and herbs on a New England roll. I made it Combo #2 for another $7, which added tots and a drink. I went with a bottle of root beer. They handed me a bag containing two boxes and my bottle of root beer. One box was noticeably larger than the other, so naturally, I assumed the larger one contained my $26 lobster roll. Nope. Those were the tots. I opened the smaller box and immediately thought, "Wait...that's it?" The lobster roll was probably about 1/2 to 2/3 the size I had imagined. There were plenty of tots, but when you're at $32.95 before tax for a lobster roll, tots, and a bottled root beer, extra potatoes don't really make up for a surprisingly small main event. Now, the important part: the lobster roll was AMAZING. The lobster tasted fresh, the garlic butter was delicious, and the parmesan and herbs complemented everything without overpowering the lobster. Taste and quality alone, this was easily 5/5. I just wanted about twice as much of it. They also offer the traditional Maine roll, served chilled with a touch of mayo, and the Connecticut roll, served warm with lemon butter. I actually considered the $30 Lobster Roll Flight, which gives you mini versions of the Maine, Connecticut, and Garlic Butter rolls. After seeing the size of my regular roll, I'm glad I didn't. I think opening a box containing three "mini" versions might have sent me into shock. All three together might still be smaller than the regular roll I got. Since it's a food truck, there wasn't really anywhere set up to eat. Luckily, there was a random bench tied to a tree in the Lowe's parking lot. I'm not sure if it's permanently there or if the other food truck parked nearby brought it, but either way, that became my table for lunch. Fourteen years after first hearing about Cousins Maine Lobster, I'm glad I finally got to try it. The actual lobster roll absolutely lived up to my expectations. The size and value? Not so much. Taste and quality: 5/5. Overall value: 3/5. Unfortunately, after 14 years of waiting, my stomach was expecting a little more lobster for $25.95.
