Things to note: they offer free estimates, but if you need troubleshooting like we did, the current rate is $200 the first hour and $100 per additional hour needed. If it's a simple fix like ours, you pay the troubleshooting cost plus any materials used. They were able to replace our breaker for us the same day as the scheduled diagnostic which was a great peace of mind for us. For more involved repairs, they provide an estimate before you give the okay to move forward. Their prices are more than fair for our area. Brittney's clear responses to my questions made me want to schedule with C. Bates Electric. I appreciated the transparency and professionalism. They were the only one to schedule a time for their estimator to come in person within 1-2 days and really assess the situation and give me a thorough list of options. So already major points for responding promptly! My project was installing a ceiling fan on vaulted ceilings. I think I contacted them through their website contact form and got an email response directly me to call them to schedule a time for the estimator Nate. The women at the office were very helpful and able to help me easily. Nate arrived bright and early at 8am. He was very thorough in discussing possible options with me. He even went up into the attic. When I mentioned we recently moved in and am not very familiar with the house yet he was incredibly helpful asking if I have any additional electrician questions! That's really going above and beyond! Value wise they are very competitive! The other quote I got was $500 and $700 depending on if there was an existing fan that's simply replaced or an all new install. Vine beat both of those quotes and even have a 5% off summer promo of the estimate if approved same day. I called back with a request to change some details on the installation. The office was able to get the message to Nate and he called me back within the hour. We finalized the quote and work was scheduled early the next week! Lindoro came to do the installation. He arrived promptly and was very polite. Very clean laying down butcher paper. He was also very thorough in confirming details of the installation. Great guy! The prices and quote times were made VERY clear ahead of the work so that I knew what I was getting and for how much. Two examples of Phase One going extra / above and beyond are their willingness to take feedback and send someone out, one day after the job was done to fix one small cosmetic thing I'd found after work was complete. Most other contractors once they're paid are really hard to get a hold of, but not Chris at Phase One. Super responsive. They have experience working with the City Offices here and their comfort with the inspectors who show up is because they stand by their work. All in all this is a good business that I hope to see stick around for a long time. You can add me to the list of people who think this company should be your first call in this area.

Chris did good work and we enjoyed having him here during the day he worked on our place. However,…read morehis communication on the business end wasn't the best. We wanted him to add 4 solar panels and do a couple of small interior projects. He didn't know that the City of Davis requires all PV projects to be permitted and that it requires any unpermitted project to be brought up to then-current code upon sale of the house, plus that it requires PG&E to be notified for PV permits (which would then cancel our NEM 1 status). So we had to drop the PV, but also added a bathroom fan. Instead of doing a change order, Chris considered that we'd cancelled the project (entitling him to keep our deposit), even though as a former contractor he probably should have known about City of Davis permitting and informed us about that at the start. In the end he kept half our deposit, but the communication wasn't great. He could have kept us more informed throughout, and told us if he didn't have experience with PV in Davis and would have to do a day-and-a-half of research at the City of Davis (as he says) for the project. Make sure you have everything very clear about your project in advance.
