We came here twice in one day while staying at the hotel. Upon arrival we came in for a quick bite and drink with our 5 year old and then again after dinner at the upstairs restaurant for a nightcap. Both times Elaine helped us and was an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT! She made us feel like we were family. Traveling and dining with a jet-lagged kid can make restaurants a challenge but the space was cozy and again service was above and beyond. Thank you Elaine for a lovely time. read more

Worst steak I have ever had. Dry and no seasoning. Burger was only slightly more edible. We finished them anyway out of respect for the cow. People who were seated after us were served before and left before we got our food. Order the fish, apparently that comes out the fastest. read more

Our first night at the Knight's Bar was just tremendous, our server, Blanca was delightful-she couldn't have been warmer or more efficient. I had the fish and chips and my husband had the salmon, generous portions and such attractive plating. My fish and chips was the best I've had in years. On night two our travel companions joined us and though we were hoping for another homer in the experience wasn't the same. Our server was adequate but not friendly. Our request for water was forgotten as was our drink order. When our meals came and the drinks didn't arrive our friend canceled the drinks. The manager came over to apologize but rather than comp something on the tab he offered dessert which wasn't something we wanted. Our meals were all great from the vegan curry to the steak, duck and my chicken tandoori flatbread however the service just wasn't up to par. It's 8pm and we are ordering dinner due to the rain outside and don't want to go outside. Check out the photos and the menu. The seafood chowder was filling and very flavorful for less than 10 euro and the hamburger was very good as well for less then 20 euro. Ordered ice cream and a crepe. Both were very good. It was supposed to come with a stoneground homemade scone with parsley butter but it was just served with a white bread roll and Guinness bread without any comment, explanation or apology. The Date and Walnut Sponge was supposed to have figs in syrup but there was no syrup, and supposed to have salted caramel ice cream but it was just vanilla... Thankfully the French Apple Tart was very nice and not all was lost. read more

I ate lunch here and I am so happy I did! I ordered the seafood chowder. It was incredible. Large pieces of fish in the soup. Not the same as what you would find in the Eastern US, completely different. It was filling and warmed me through and through. The bar is beautiful and the service was excellent. We ate at Knight's Bar on the last night of our Ireland vacation. We were very hungry and really wanted to enjoy a tasty, fun meal, but were disappointed. We had drinks at the bar while waiting a good 45 minutes for a table. Drinks were pricey, but fine. The manager wanted to seat us in one of the beautiful window seats in the back, but it just wasn't meant to be as the groups at those tables were there for the long haul. I ordered a cheeseburger since my friends had enjoyed fantastic burgers throughout Ireland, but I had yet to try one. Unfortunately, this one was way overcooked, dry, and lacked flavor. The fries weren't much better. They were cooked fine, but tasted like a freezer. I recommend Knight's Bar as a charming, atmospheric lounge at which to enjoy a drink or two. It's really quite beautiful. However, I don't recommend you order a burger to go with your cocktail. read more

We came in for a light bite and a drink-enjoyed the smoked salmon and duck bon bon appetizers. Both were delicious and very well presented. Our dinner experience at the Knight's Bar was, overall, on the more positive side. After a long day of sight seeing, we checked in and opted to eat dinner at the hotel. I had the Knight's (Chicken) Club (€15.5). It was described as grilled and seasoned with lemon and garlic. Honestly, it tasted quite plain except for the char. It was also extremely dry. The lettuce was crisp, but the tomatoes were very mealy. The sandwich size was impressive and difficult to eat, so I deconstructed it and tackled it with knife and fork. The duck egg was a nice touch and cooked beautifully, and the American-style bacon (odd for Ireland where rasher reigns supreme!) was done well. Finally, the chips were hot and crispy. Service decent. We had to keep flagging down our server, though she had maybe 3 tables total (that I could see) including us. Once we got ahold of her, things were fine and we got our drink refills. The space is nice: on the classier side with an intimate feel (odd because it's a large space). Aside from service, they could improve by ensuring tables are wiped down and salt/pepper is on each one. read more

Had a great experience at the bar. The bartender started a Guinness pour for me and a butthole frat boy tried to steal it. I spoke up to the bartender and he saved my drink! Excellent service. Snacked on haddock cakes and was pleasantly surprised at the side for a "small bite". read more

Ate both lunch and dinner here today. Lunch menu much more flexible for our guests. Dinner menu both restricted and expensive. Good cobb salad at lunch, with nice choice of plates and sandwiches. Dinner much more formulaic, with stuff done in advance. Coleslaw sopping with bottled dressing and way too much vinegar in things. We visited this spot on our first night in Dublin. The ambiance was great and all. We sat at our table for about 10 mins or so before somebody finally came to see us. By that time, we looked through everything and made our complete orders because we didn't want to sit around for another 10-15 mins. All I had was tea, so the four stars are based more on 1) how freakin' NICE it is in here, and 2) my expectation that everything else here lives up to that quality. To proceed: The carvery lunch options look delicious. I noticed people from all walks of life - from strollers to walkers to people who can actually walk - come here for their midday repast. The dining room is very tastefully decorated and well maintained. I kept joking I was going to make the place into my living room, but secretly I meant it. The Guinness also looks beautifully poured, with nice, dense, creamy heads of goodness that just beg to become your new Guinness moustache. The gents' room is well kept as well, with fancy soap and all. That seems a good indication of the way things are run here too. Finally, as to the tea I had: Bewley's roobois tea. I've had a lot of roobois in my years, but damned if this didn't actually taste better than any other I've had. It has a slight sweetness to it, yet is pure, unadulterated, and un-messed-with tea. So that was new. I recommend y'all check this place out before I make it my living room. read more

We were pretty exhausted from our flight and car rental so instead of exploring Clontarf, we opted to just eat in at the hotel. There are two separate restaurants at the Clontarf Castle - the Knight's Bar is the more casual of the two. I had an open-faced steak sandwich with a still water (comes in a bottle - just order a water if you don't want it bottled or they have sparkling). Mom got one of their signature cocktails and the fish and chips which she really enjoyed. The steak on my sandwich was exquisite, buttery, and was very satisfying. The interior of the bar is gorgeous with what look like original or close-to original features from the castle. The service was a little slower than we're used to in the States but was friendly. Later the night, we also got dessert and tea which they delivered to use in the seating area outside of the main eating area. My panne cotte was smaller than I expected for the price but was good quality. An overall great experience for these weary travellers. read more

My wife and I checked in yesterday and decided to eat at the hotel, rather than venture out. We ordered the combo snacks for two - meats, cheeses, artichokes and breads, and a bowl of cream of mushroom soup. One type of ham was a little too fatty for our taste, but generally everything was good. The enjoyment ended after my wife found a hair in the soup. The server was nice and friendly, but seemed to disappear about halfway through. So I mentioned the soup hair to another server, who didn't seem overly interested. I expected at least the soup charge to be removed, but it wasn't. I can't really complain about the price, because it is hotel food after all, which is always more costly than elsewhere. read more

I recently visited Clontarf Castle for the Sunday lunch carvery. It's an impressive location with lots of nooks and a secret room behind the piano in the reception area. The hotel is very well kept and mostly deserves its good reputation. As many people from Clontarf regard the castle as their local, there's always a good mix of natives and tourists (by tourist I mean Americans not people from the Southside). I expected the carvery would be pretty good and it mostly was, the turkey was cooked perfectly and mouth wateringly succulent. The roast potatoes were not as good, actually they were inedible rock hard lumps. I have a real problem with this I would describe my own cooking ability as adequate so I know its not hard to make roast potatoes that aren't hard, yet this seems to elude a lot of hotels and to be honest if your job is to cook food for paying customers then you should get it right every time. I expect that when our plates were collected nobody noticed or thought to comment on the fact that the potatoes hadn't been touched and they will probably not improve but you never know, maybe they'll see this and look into it. The conclusion is, that its great place to go for a drink in a couple or with mates. On the carvery front its inconsistent good on some things and poor on others the food has a long way to go. The service was perfunctory and as seems to be the case everywhere in Ireland hotels and restaurants are always trying to save a few euros off the wages bill. This is a false economy because oftentimes people just leave. In our case the prospective "one for the road" was abandoned because all the waiting staff disappeared. I know what you're thinking, and yes, we do have legs, we could have gone to bar but once you have to get up anyway you tend to just keep going. read more

The entire experience here was really lacking and overpriced (it's really something when a New Yorker calls something overpriced), I'm honestly shocked there are so many good reviews which is why I felt compelled to post a review to let others know the deal. I am so disappointed we chose to have our last meal in Ireland here after having such incredible food and service across the country all week, which were all way cheaper than this one. And there's so much amazing food downtown, don't make the same mistake we did. If you're looking for a bar, keep looking. This place on a Saturday night cut off all music by 10pm, and you could start to hear the clanking of glasses, usually a sign in a bar that it's time to leave, and basically everyone did. It's a shame because they could do so much with this space. And how does a place in a 4 star hotel have their bar use cheap paper coasters? At that point, just use a napkin. If you're looking for a restaurant, keep looking. My Caesar salad with prawns was €18 and was a slab of uncut romaine with tasteless dressing, a few pretty tasteless small shrimp, and crostini. No one in my party raved about their food, it was all pretty bland and overpriced across the board. We asked our server if she had any suggestions on the menu and she shrugged and said she didn't know. Then asked her about the different gins on the menu, because there are 16 different kinds on the menu from Ireland, and she shrugged again. After 8 days in Ireland we became accustomed to some of the friendliest and most genuinely helpful people we ever encountered on our travels, particularly in pubs and restaurants, so this was somewhat of a shock especially considering the price and surroundings. As a former waitress I truly hate negatively critiquing servers. And to be clear, she was not outwardly rude in a way (no one here was), but it was clear she wasn't properly trained. When I was a server I knew every single drink and piece of food on the menu, because when you're in an upscale place, a part of the job is to add to the experience, and my training facilitated that. read more
